you might as well wait for the trial so it seems.  i don't plan on playing the game, but after checking out the sto forums and other various sites and comments, you should try then buy.  Unless you just have to play it now.

  • scaryguy69scaryguy69 Member Posts: 3

If i can give you any advice .. ever, it's not to buy this game...

It's just plain terrible with a slightly fun combat system, If the game was Free, I would still feel ripped off.

  • sadeyxsadeyx Member UncommonPosts: 1,555

Its not THAT bad, you will get your moneys worth of fun.

But will you re-sub? Will you still be playing a few months down the line?... no.

If you can, best wait 6 months.

IMHO, and that of many others, this title doesn’t even qualify as an mmo in the truest sense, everything is instanced, far more so than AOC, with most instances only allowing 5 man teams, with starbases, pvp and fleet actions being the exception.

The game is also woefully light on content, with many folks capping after a week or two and finding there is really nothing to do, unlike most mmo's when the meat of the game begins. I capped after playing 14 days and have now cancelled; as a comparison, playing at the same rate of three or four hours a session, it took me three months to cap my first EQ2 and vanguard chars, even Aion took me two months. My total /played time was two days 6 hours, and that takes into account all the travelling and waiting around inside the game due to lagged instance queues. However, I should point out that I did have the advantage of closed beta experience, removing the typical learning curve on first starting an mmo.

As a trekkie and mmo fan I really wanted this to work out, but atm, it is left wanting, it does have an initial wow factor, getting to fly inside a Star trek mmo, but that gloss very quickly wears off. After this, I doubt I will look at another Cryptic title, as it is clear they have no idea what makes a successful long-term mmo. The entire thing can be soloed without ever needing to interact with others, and has no depth whatsoever, which is criminal considering the ip‘s wealth of content.

As others have suggested, if you have not already purchased a copy, wait 6 months, and hopefully it will have been fleshed out by then; if you really must play now, try and grab a buddy key as this will grant you access for 5 days.

I normally buy most mmos that come out to try them out. There have been two I stayed far away from, Aion and STO. Aion was just never fun at all. STO seemed like a lot of fun the first day. But after that I couldn't stand playing it. It was so boring.  To me it felt more like a money grab than actually trying to make a good Star Trek title. I would advise you to stay away from it.

Nah, the game is good at what it is supposed to be - casual game with strong emphasis on story driven gameplay.

You might wait for first content update to implement some repetitive 'end-game' content like level based games use to have.

If I had to compare the game to some other, I would say Guild Wars. It is more instanced which is not actualy worse, it also makes sense IP wise.

The combat and misions are quite fun. No more killing of zillion of mobs. Most encounters have 1-4 ships per spawn and you will have to make an effort to beat them instead of common hack and slash grind.
As said, the game is focused on missions and you do make sure to read all dialogues, it is definately worthy ;-)

Look up some videos on youtube to see how the game plays.

If you like Star Trek type space battles, you will love the game. If you want a fast paced ground FPS style ground game...go eslewhere. STO is a mixed bag. As mentioned, space is where the game shines. Ground on the other hand is a bit clunky. That is not to say that playing ground actions is unsatisfying. Content is more then enough to keep you busy. Those that have maxed level have done so via some "power leveling" loop-holes that allowed them to by-pass most of the real content.

Where is the game going? According to the Devs, there is a lot that will be modified and a lot that will be added in the next couple of months. Much that is going to be added is additional content for mid to high end levels.

Is it a waste of money? I don't think so. It is an MMO and will be changed/added to like all MMO's. Will it get better, probably....at least I would bet on it. It is worth it now....I think so.

As others have said.  Try before you buy unless you absolutely can't wait.  It's not as bad as alot of people claim, here.  Ship combat is great, but the ground play is clunky and often a nuisance.  Fortunately, most of the game is in your ship.

Not alot of content compared to most mmo's, but unlike Champions Online, they've paced XP gain pretty well so that you can get to max rank without repeating much content.

I'm almost to max rank, now.  It's likely I'll be unsubbing after my free month until they improve the downtime activities and/or offer more content.

silly question to put to this site for a newly released game, thinks back to AOC, WAR, AION, LOTRO. My advice, as always, is try it for yourself. I had 0 interest in this game during development. I tried beta on a whim and have enjoyed it since.

Could it be improved? Yes. Is it bug free? No.

    I'm with this guy.

I only did OB and don't know if any of the post-launch patches have been a step in the right direction.  I do know there's a lot Cryptic can do to add to the game and polish it up.

The real question comes down to; will there be enough for you to do while paying $15.00 a month, while you wait for those large patches to come out?  And to that question I've got to say set your money aside and wait for a free trial down the road.

I plan on checking it out again 6 months to a year from now.  It was OK, it was fun, it was kind of Star Trek and it seemed to follow Cryptic's future history.  The game does have a number of good features; auto-grouping, character and ship customization, but it also has some bad one's; the travel map, fairly dumb AI, some of the standard stuff you see in other games that get fixed later on.

It's a very casual game.  The type of thing you'd play once or twice a week in between other games.

    SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter

I found the Game to be seriously lacking in a lot of ways...It has potential and I liked the Graphics...But I got bored REAL fast with the Space Combat...I know some Folks like it...I found it dull and WAY overly repetitive...I actually liked the Ground Combat more but I would go days getting on the ground only a couple times if that much...

If I could give any advice it would be to wait 6-12 Months...Then try it out...But You may like it from the get-go...Some certainly do...Who knows?

You're right, STO is not well received by the people on this website. You must understand though, that the people on this website are extremist. They believe MMO's should be made a certain way, and any deviation from the norm is frowned upon. They don't evaluate a game based on its own merits and whether or not it's fun. Instead, they very critically and anally perform an in depth analysis of the game. They forget that MMORPG's are just games. You also can't tear apart a game and evaluate it as such. You must take the game in as a whole, and then judge whether or not it is fun.

I for one have played since headstart. So I'm starting my 4th week in game right now. I'm still having fun, and have joined a good fleet along the way.

Honestly? This is the advice I have to give. Find a trial key and try it out first. Personally, I love the game. I played OB (which I admit was painful) and liked it enough to get a lifetime sub. I've enjoyed it even more since launch. But here's the thing: this game is polarizing. I'd say 99% of the people who play it either love it or hate it. No middle ground. You may find that it is a great game, but maybe not. No one here can speak for your game tastes and how you will receive this game. The majority of the posters here do not like the game and most of them bring up valid points as to why. Some of us do like the game and can, as well, point out why. You may buy it, play it for a month, quit and be ok with a 50$ purchase. Or you may be pissed off and go on endless tirades against Cryptic forever afterward. But seriously, if you're on the fence, try before you buy. I could stand to have one less hater who feels cheated. And if you do like it, that's awesome and I'll see you in-game.

I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil

I liked it at the start but found both ground and space combat to get boring and repetitive. Although the actual mission 'verb' differs the end result is basically the same. For kill 5 rats, substitute kill 5 orion (Klingon, Gorn, Romulan, Shining Path, Jem Hadar....) squadrons. Or kill some space stuff, beam to planet kill ground stuff, access computer (or press F), beam to ship and kill more space baddies...  after 37 levels this got boring ( and this was playing 3 hrs a day since headstart so the guy who said it's a power level hack has no clue what he's talking about).

My advice, wait for the trial.

Seriously? That's some MAJOR over-generalization there...

The #1 thing I look for in a Game is whether or not I'm having fun...It's a freaking Game...If I'm not having fun wtf am I doing?...I could go play frizbee with the Dog instead...lol

I had a blast at times (but most especially when I started) playing SWG, Vanguard, LOTRO, AoC, even EQII...Some REAL fun times and killer adventures with Friends from the get-go...With STO I was forcing Myself to Log on after only a few days...I was not having fun at all...I was bored stiff...Now that is just My opinion, nothing more than that...But no question the single thing I judge any MMO I've played by is whether or not I'm having fun...And I can honestly say STO is the first MMO I've played from Launch that I was not having fun at all...

    Again...Just Me...And just saying...

I'd have to say it depends on whether you're a fan of the movies/shows. If you are, the game is totally worth it, at least for the first month or so. If you're just looking for a new MMO, then I'd say pass.

What I like the most about the game is the ship-to-ship combat and customization. You can completely customize not only your character, but also your bridge officers and your ship. Getting to a new rank (every 10 levels) means you have another cool ship and additions to your crew.

HOWEVER, most of the quests are super repetitive. There are some cool "instanced" encounters that have a storyline on par with most MMOs. Otherwise, you're just flying around space blowing up random Klingons/Gorn/Romulans. Oh, and the exploration missions absolutely suck. You're either playing the Red Cross and shuttling supplies to outposts or beaming down to a planet to investigate alien artifacts. With no combat. In the middle of a sandstorm so it takes 15-20 minutes to find the #$@! things.

  • ktanner3ktanner3 Member UncommonPosts: 4,063

The only person who can make that judgement is you. Some of the people here who have been trashing the game were trashing it way before there was a beta so you have to take those with a grain of salt. Some tried it and simply didn't like it, which is understandable because not everyone likes the same thing. I like it myself. It's different than any other game I've played and is certainly more bug free than other mmos I have played. It picks up where Nemesis left off and carries that timeline forward in an interesting way.

As far as sites go, if you want to see how trekkies feel about it go to the trek bbs website and check out their gaming forum. They're loving it.

I think it's more than that. I am a fan of the shows, so I do enjoy that part of the game. Sadly, there's just so much joy in listening/watching the effects when you are beamed.  When it gets down to actual gameplay, it's a joke. It is a joke in difficulty, as 99% of the fights are winnable in autofire without you doing much.  All the tools, all the abilities, all the different types of weapons, all that is wasted.  And this is not me being 'uber', it's really too easy.   Boringly easy.  At first you'll be awed by all the pewpewing and all the flash and sounds from Star Trek, but when you realize your hull/health never goes down and you're actually playing in god mode, it loses all the shine.

Now, I realize some people enjoy playing games in 'god mode', if you're one of those, then by all means buy it.

Nothing really says how good or how bad something is, like the market.

For my own amusement, I poked around EBay and some of the other sites and saw people trying to sell lifetime accts for $100 and less.

By that measure, I guess the game is about 40% as good as they thought it would be... :)

Which is to say, not that good.

Hmm... are you sure you're not looking at current bids?  I checked ebay and all I saw were two posts, one ending in 7 days, the other a buy now at $308.

Actually, you can use the scanner. It will point to the closest 'clickable', regardless of if it's an anomaly, a quest objective, a container, or whatever. It works in space and ground, so those ground missions are not that bad :)

Depends. Do you expect a Star Trek virtual world simluation with complexity and depth then the game is awful.

If you expect a casual space shooter which is mainly about combat and where you destroy scores of ships every day and where your ship, and its thousands of crew, respawn after 10 seconds of being destroyed. Then you will probably like it.

So it all depends on your expectancies. However, even if you belong to the second group, I can not see this game having the content of more than a month of casual playing. But the combat is actually surprisingly fun, for a while...

  • Darth_OsorDarth_Osor Member Posts: 1,089

The game is heavily instanced.  More than AoC.  PvP is all queued battlegrounds.  Queued PvP I can live with, but all the load screens drive me nuts.

Ground combat is absolutely awful.  Not only that, it's so easy you can AFK and let your NPCs win the battle by themselves, and their AI sucks.  Do NOT give them consumables because they just totally use them at random, including while not even in combat.  Pathing can be especially aggravating on missions where there is a lot of ground clutter because you'll either be doubling back to get them or sitting there waiting for them to unstick themselves.

Space combat starts out almost as easy, but is at least entertaining oddly enough.  My character hit captain and I've yet to die in any solo mission.  I didn't really notice an increase in difficulty until commander, and even then it was still easy, but again oddly enough it still manages to entertain me.  I've died a few times in fleet actions, but that usually involved a spawning in an instance on a large group of enemy ships or not paying attention and drawing too much aggro on said large group.  Only two of your up to eight ship weapons can be set to autofire, meaning you will do much button mashing for those other weapons, on top of firing off your and your bridge officers specials, steering your ship, etc.

There is no real crafting system.  Major negative for me.  There is no sort by price option on the Exchange (auction house), so good luck sorting through pages 100 items long of people charging premium prices for trash drops.

Missions, with few exceptions, don't really feel like Star Trek to me.  You pretty much kill everything in sight, and those NPCs you don't kill are all scripted events where your dialog options are basically clicking "OK".  You can't talk your way into or out of fights.

Your bridge officers can be trained up and equiped like NPCs in Bioware's games, but they have no personailty and you can't talk to them other than acknowedging some info pop-ups.

IMO wait for a free trial or get a buddy key from someone.
