Darkfall NA means Darkfall U.S.

Just a warning. The server issues with the game make it unplayable, especially in peak hours anywhere outside of the US.  I've put up with these guys for upwards of 4 months hoping at some point i wouldn't have to the "restart your modem dance" every hour or so just to keep the game playable.

Don't get me wrong, I love the game. It's really well thought out and compelling, especially politically. (Think a much more action packed, bloody version of Eve when it was first released). Unfortunately I can not invest my time in a game that has atrocious, unplayable lag.

Note: Darkfall technical service will also send you on a wild goose chase trying to figure out wtf they are trying to explain. At some point they will tell you to contact your isp who will tell you there is nothing that they can do. Very poor customer service in both cases.

It's unfortunate. I hate to see so much realized and unrealized potential go to waste.

Well, if restarting your modem helps the problem then the problem must be on your side, not on theirs.

This is a very strong indication that the problem is on your end.

This is fine. How do I fix it?

Could be a hardware problem, or it could be a problem with your provider.  You need to run traceroutes to the game servers when your having the problem and see if and where you are dropping packets or encountering bad lag... then compare them to when your game is playing normally.

Also make sure nobody is stealing bandwidth from your wireless or something similiar (ie a roommate downloading stuff)..  I've known a lot of people who had the same symtoms only to realize later that somebody was stealing their bandwidth for downloads over an unencrypted wireless network.

It's very easy to check if it's DF problem or not.

    tracert www.us1.darkfallonline.com

If you see the same ping spikes using tracert, somewhere far away from DF server and your client - you're pretty much screwed. Aventurine solved some problems by working with some ISPs - but some ISPs try to shape Internet traffic, hardcode packet routes, and treat DF traffic as "not very important", and there is not much you can do, except changing ISP.

If you don't see ping spikes using tracert - it may be DF problem. For some reason DF requires reliable real time clock  - and if real time on your PC is drifting - there are few ways to fix it.

    Please also try:

    tracert www.eu1.darkfallonline.com

For some guys on east coast Frankfurt is closer than California. European ISPs usually don't use traffic shaping ("network neutrality") - and packets travel using shortest possible route.

Replace the modem.  Replace all network cables.  If you have cable, have a cable tech come out and check your lines or replace your lines.  If you are on DSL I am not sure what to say.  I know there are two types of "modes" DSL can have.  One mode can create lag in most every game.  I have forgotten the terminology.  If you live outside of the United States then there will be no way to get good ping unless your in northern Mexico or western Canada.

The definition of insanity: doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.
