The issue is/was with redist August 2009.  Google Dragon Age and VPU.  If you disable VPU recovery in ATi it will keep running at warp speed in streaky behavior, basically ignores timing for animation and bursts all over the place until it overflows, then stalls, kills the queue and back to warp.
For me it was consistent on both XP SP3 and Win7 32 and 64 bit.  DX that shipped, fine, update to Aug09, crash.  CO also had issues with that version.  Feb10 redist may have corrected the issue but why risk it?

I'm running Win7 x64 and the redist from Feb 2010. With that I've not ran into any of those problems it plays the game fine. I'm using most current ATI drivers as well. Even before the Feb 2010 redist I never had any problems running DA.

There was one build of ATI drivers that caused problems in AOC with DX10. It was a known issue and was fixed in the following months updates.

I googled Dragon Age and VPU and the problems seem to come from ATI drivers not a Directx issue, unless I'm reading it wrong.

CO had a crashing issue but was fixed on PTS and when it went live I can play the game just fine now. Nothing I would ever suggest was a cause of updating directx builds. To each their own I guess.

I am upgrading the processor to a Q6600 2.4Ghz Core2 quad. Will this make a difference?

  • drbaltazardrbaltazar Member UncommonPosts: 7,856

w7 64 works with everything i have sent at it so far!the only question i have is this!

does all game support large adress aware(since i activated this feature!)

aside from that out of the box i would be very suprised if i heard a title not supported in the off chance it doesnt work in the program files x86.theres always the compatibility mode xp,vista etc the whole nine yard but so far with the program files x86 i havent had to touch anything w7 detect everything!its insanelly compatible

just make all change before you install os ,change bios setting before putting new os once your sure your bios is at optimum setting let w7 do its magic!

So my new  Q6600 2.4Ghz Core2 quad will make a difference?

    what was your old proc

  • drbaltazardrbaltazar Member UncommonPosts: 7,856

w 7 64 bit is a diff beast! aside from disabling indexing for game there is not much to say with this os

play with it the way you did vista and xp and most of the time the computer will go slower

there are some tweak but i would say they can be counted in 1 hand the one that works

might discover new one later but for now i ve tried them all and on average your better leaving the os alone if you adjusted

bios properly at start then the only thing left to do is go to speedguide.net and tweak netsh thing thats it .not much else!

the tweak most gamer have been looked into by ms and often ms have optimised those tweak internally and rendered outside code useless or hidden new tweak in numbered other layer of the registery!

the main tweak that work is direct cache access for specific intel user not all have this feature avail but if you got a network card from intel a mobo from intel and proc you might have direct cache access avail

speedguide.net tell how to activate it .but still lot of specialist checked and found out that the prefetch on a amd is around 6 and on a intel its 66 so overall amd still has the upperhand!but direct cache access give intel owner a tremendous advantage sending data directly from and to cache of proc instead of slower memory give them an unfair advantage .maybe amd as a futur bios patch in the way but as of now i dont think they have direct cache access plan (proc to network)

So it's runing good for you in DX10? Or you run the game mostly in DX9?

    Welcome back.

I am running it in DX 9 fully cranked. I am a little concerned about the performance for this engine in DX10 on my rig. If I do try it and it doesn't care for my system how can I go back to DX 9?

I am all set thanks everyone! This game is way better than it was 2 years ago- cheers!

edited to add on: The DX 10 was a bit laggy when maxed. But I tweaked it.  It looks really good.

I have a little problem with AoC. I have just got a new PC with AMD Phenom II X4 955 BE Cpu, 2x GTS250 cards in Sli mode with 8Gb Ram. Running it on Win 7 64bit and I have DirectX 11 on the machine. I just installed AoC and when I try to start it up it says DirectX is out of date.

I went on trying to update it but I cannot update it at all. when I downloaded the DirectX file from Microsoft and trying to run it it says choose a folder. When I select a folder it comes up with an error message that "Make sure the folder exists and it is writable." ... I am extremely frustrated now with all IT related crap ... mind you I am not an expert by any means as I work in healthcare but if anyone know a solution and can explain it step by step how to fix it I would be eternally grateful ;)

    Thanks,

I've been using W7 x64 for about 4 months now.  I can run Conan in DX10 with about 10 to 60 fps depending on what is being rendered.  Usually its about 20 to 30 fps.  Under DX9 it ranges from 20 to 150 fps, usually averaging about 50 to 60 fps.

I did not see any appreciable increase when I went from Vista to W7.

I am running an Intel QX9650 chip, 8gigs of DDR2-800 ram and a non overclocked Nvidia 295GTX card and have never had problems with Conan + W7 x64.  I would recommend getting W7 to anyone from XP.  From VIsta tho, I never saw any improvement personally.  I'd still recommend the upgrade, but not because of better Conan performance.

    My own personal observations.

Edit:  I have video settings in Conan cranked up max in both DX9 and DX10.

I'm not creative enough to have a signature

    Win 7 runs AoC sweet for me (q8300 4gig ddr2 ati5770) .

I run dx9. dx10 is not a final version, and is still a bit rough around the edges, although dx10 features like "godrays" and water effects look very nice.

Personally I think they should forget dx10 and start on dx11.

It worked about as well as it normally has on my W7-64 machine.  IE fairly well except for the occasional blurry texture that wasn't blurry before, and the magic floating sword you wield that ends up further and further away as you play...

worked fine for me except the frame rate was not very good compared to similar games  and some of the DX10 effects were rather bizzare looking. I am used to running most games with all the sliders at max, with AoC however I could not even get 30FPS without tweaking the heck out of it.

    I miss DAoC

dont replace graphic setting from your graphic card end!lot of games use very advanced dx feature that become a vidion nightmare if graphic card replace all setting for some weird reason ati and nvidia both have the same issue

they seems to process stuff like bloom hdr etc in the wrong order and process graphic card setting first (i look that way)

in so doing when dx rendering is applied after aa and af it looks awfull

best bet let the game handle it ,its often the best bet!yes some game like mabinogi gain a lot by replacing

graphic with the graphic card one !its a case by case issue !but often the newer game tends to look better if you use

the game setting instead of the graphic card one

one tip:adjust the card the way you want it(usually ,AAX4(EDGE DETECT,OR SIMILAR TECHNO FOR NVIDIA)AF TO YOUR LIKING,deactivate any ati or nvidia enhancement option(unless you are absolutelly sure the card support that game)

restart!set your card so it will use the game setting!and you should have nice graphic!

Vista is MUCH more of a resource hog then Win 7. Win 7 beats Vista and XP hands down.

I would never keep Vista on a PC. I would rather run XP.
