True, but from what Ive seen and read, they are going for brutal realism. Under that optic, its perfectly consistent I guess.
Well if we're aiming for brutal realism, wouldn't the towns have lights? Torches on the wall, lanterns etc so that the inhabitants aren't walking into things and each other?
Also, from what I can see, torches carried by other people do not light up the surrounding area. Missed opportunity for some really pretty visuals right there. It just looks ugly at the moment.
Actually rlmccoy1987 your 2nd pic didn't show it that bad but yes towns should have some torches that are possible to lighten up during the night to have better visibility.

After about 5 minutes of walking around in that town, I got reminded why I do not enjoy the game and closed the window
no night is perfectly pitch black, unless there is full cloud cover. In fact, on a clear night sky you can see well enough to walk around due to starlight (even more so if there is a moon).
They need to lighten it up a bit. there's a difference between lighting used to make things challenging and lighting used thats just annoying and ruins peoples fun.
Kinda neat actually... most games got a pretty boring take on night; its a bit more gray/blue generally, and thats it.
Though they should have torches in towns at night, and they could have at least 2 "types" of night: cloudy and pitch black, and moon/starlight which could be a bit lighter.
Oh, and there should totally be ghouls/zombies or something roaming at night!
did anyone try turning up their gamma? this usually works for any game that is "too dark" at night. i think its pretty neat and gives more imersion but thats just me.
I give you standard MO answer: DOESN'T WORK! Gamma slider I mean.
this is the reason i am not playing much in beta. ive been in since block D but i have probably played > 1 hour. i just pop in after every patch to see how much more they have added and the improvements they made. this gives me protection from the nerd rage beta quits and hate that seem to be following this game from people who are playing the beta and expecting it to be in release/polished form.
its been stated many times what the game will and will not be at release by the devs. people should not be surprised at all and it makes me laugh when people get so pissed off about it. it has the potential to be a spectacular game, the right mechanics, the devs all seem to be moving in the same/right direction. it just needs time and support from its fanbase (prime example being eve online and the pile of steaming crap it was when released to what it is today).
I find humor in the fact they are going for realism but have magic in the game.
Let me explain something to you:
You think, "fantasy" equals "there is no need for realism in any way". Like, there is no need for gravity for example.
However, "fantasy" as setting = "take the real world from around the medieval era, and shape it in such a way as it might look like if there'd be magic". That's the basics.
And now explain to me why it's funny if a game says "we are creating a fantasy themed game that is at the same time trying to be realistic".
Finally a game thinks that "night" does not equal "same as day, but just in blue", and people complain or mock. Well, I guess it's "bashing time" again. Same as there was "hyping time" for Aion and "bashing time" for Alganon. It's the same time a forum is not about a discussion anymore, about comments that make any sense, but about going with the flow and just bash or hype what the crowd tells you to.

Isn't that a tad too much dark?
Is there a night vision spell?
Just torches right now, but a night vision spell seems likely to come in the future. And the dark is great
A mmo where the night is actually dark. That looks pretty good actually.
If you stand VERY still, and close your eyes, after a minute you can actually FEEL the universe revolving around PvP.
Yeah the darkness is actually good but I thought if you would have to use torches you would be easily seen by other people.

Monsters sleep by night or still wander? or different monsters hunt by night?
That would be a neat touch. Do they have monsters now? =P

Finally a game where "night" means "dark" and not, as in most MMORPGs, "same as day, but in blue".
Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)
Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

More realism for the sake of realism.
"We want dark to be so dark you can't see shit!!!!!!"
What a moronic decision.
What's next? When you get a poison spell tossed on you the player is no longer able to log in for a week due to being bed ridden.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
Lighting needs work... need more lights in the towns...
Looks pretty cool!
Great choice of music aswell, some old school swedish metal
If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
carry a torch and youll be fine but this might not be 100 percent the way its going to be since it was first put in

Lighting needs a fix, seriously.
Everything does IMO.
[Mod Edit]
Remember, playing the darkness is uber realistic! Just use your imagination and you will be fine!

The sky and moon are so bright, but the "land" is pitch dark. Pretty realistic...
