I prefer the default to be 3rd person with the option to "scroll in" to 1st person if I want to.

Having 1st person as the only option is the quickest way to get me to pass on your game.

the sad thing for us 1st view fans is that its very common for the inverse to be true.

3rd person with no realistic good version of 1st scroll up.

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Put a good deal of thought into the design behind both though (drew up a design doc for an indie MMORPG project) and it made me realize how many game design elements are totally dictated by the camera decision.

Your post made me realize that its not that "I" want to be in the game, its that i enjoy controlling the char i put into existence.  Again, almost exactly like PnP games watching my minature on the table do what i tell it to, rather than ME being in the game.  I'm way too overweight to be a sword dueling slicing machine, if I was in the game my gameplay would consist of dropping all my gear every 2 minutes for an asthma attack.  Not a lotta fun there imho.  So yeah still 3rd person for me.

Heh, I wish more people attempted to make their avatars look more like themselves with a bit more honesty. My SWG char was spot on, and I met a balding and overweight merchant once and he said that's just how he looked in RL too. I told him he's one of the coolest guys in the game for "keepin it real" like that. There's a dude who is comfortable with himself enough to advertise it anywhere.

I say if you really wanted to make a char like yourself, just do it. A chubby dual-wielder isn't that strange, and if it is, then be the bulky 2-handed cleaver dude. I remember in AoC CB I made the biggest/fattest (yes there was fat chars back then) assassin I could make... and it totally worked. There's nothing like popping out of stealth and revealing a sumo wrestler on the enemy.
