What if Final Fantasy XIV sucks?

Well we have some speculation here. I've been thinking about playing FFXIV for a long time, but now after the failure of many MMOs, I'm starting to wonder about FFXIV.
I'm gunna play the devils advocate for a couple of minutes here. Lets say everything goes as planned, beta for 5-6 months, then release in late October, but what happens if the game sucks? If it has core issues, glitches, and un-polished. Will you still play?
Will you wait around for it to get better and have patches? or will it become dead like vangaurd?
I have total faith in SE, and even if the game was just HORRIBLE, i'd probably stick around because 1. it might get better, 2. I have NOTHING else to play right now, 3. I dont' know if I could go back to FFXI.
Guess we'll wait and see...

Glitches / bugs are something I can tolerate in a game period, not just MMOs. If it, fundamentally, has issues and core problems (overall unpolished) then no, I will not play.
But all they need to do is make a modernized, sped up (control wise) version of FFXI, and you have a successful game. But they're going to be giving us much more than that. But if it does turn out to definitely "suck" then I'll pass it up, just like those other MMOs who suffered similar fates (RF Online, Warhammer Online, Champions Online, Aion, Star Trek Online).
I respect Final Fantasy XI and all that it did, because fundamentally, it was correct. But I couldn't fully engross myself due to the sheer archaic gameplay and movement. I could deal with the time it took you to level (in fact, I encourage it in future games), but the gameplay itself was just a little uninspiring. That's the ONLY problem I had with it.
But that doesn't look like it's going to be a problem in FFXIV, based on the videos we've seen so far. So, like I said, if they can give us basically everything they gave FFXI, but a better version then there would be no reason to not play it.
Well, for one, 'failure' is a subjective term in the case of MMORPGs. One man's meat is another man's poison after all. Vanguard isnt a failure to me. After a rocky launch it's actually a great game in my eyes thats at this time being kept from finding it's true audience only by SOE. AoC also released in what many would call a 'broken' state and imo it's a great game today.
If FFXIV releases with really severe technical problems I would probably just give it time and see what happens to it in the 6 months following. IF SE behaved like NCS have done with Aion I would keep well away.
None if this is really my worry with this game though.. on the technical side of things I have no fear SE can deliver. My fear is that in chasing the mass market they have watered the game down into a solo ez mode pay to win (MT) quest grinder.
Like you say, we will see...
Im doubting it will suck but its always possible it wont live up to my extremely high standards.
If that happens I will await GW2.

I will definitely be upset if it doesn't do very well. I've been looking for something new to play for a very long time.
The game will make or break with me depending on how long things take... example would be... Me having to sit at my desk for 6 hours straight. I can't do that stuff anymore like I could in FFXI since I have grown up and finished college.
So yeah... I'll probably like the game as long as I can just log on and off at my leisure and still somewhat progress.
When it comes to SE generally polish and stability is really not so much an issue, but who knows.
Not enough information for even a far-fetched guess yet anyways, but lets say if FFXIV turns out to be a mediocre game, it probably will still have a healthy amount of subscriber to keep it going for years. The chance of actually failing badly or SE having to pull the plug is so low that it would actually be surprising if it happen.
Of course the above guess is totally based on track records of SE and FFXI, but as we know in MMORPG industry track records doesn't make a good basis for anything much less a guess.

Well I clicked on the thread name thinking "huh I made one like this" and I got about half way through and I was like.........Wait a second...

I'm lucky. I still enjoy FFXI, so if I like FFXIV better, it's win, if I don't, I stick with FFXI, still win. After reading what is planned for FFXI, I'm not sure I even want to love FFXIV more, but I don't figure I can lose, unless I drive myself crazy playing both.
The only reason Vanguard isn't dead already is because of SOE. Rose colored glasses and all that, but the fact that SOE picked it up is the only reason the servers aren't completely closed down.
I realize there is still some anger about SWG NGE but people are getting pretty ****ing ridiculous about SOE in my opinion.
Glitches, bugs I don't really care as long as there aren't any game breaking things. The only thing I'm really worried about is if I'll like the jobs or not. I really liked SAM, DRG, SMN, and BLM, but, as long as there is some sort of BLM type character I should be set. But if I don't end up liking XIV I'll probably just go back to XI since XIV is the only MMO I'm looking forward to.

This is a first. An OP that isnt the OP, though he is the OP of this thread, though he stole it from Dewm from another site.
Well if it sucks, I guess everyone will have to find a way to fight off all those guns pointed at their heads forcing them to play the game.
1st off its Sqaure Enix 2nd off the will have the game done awesome before release i mean bugs happen thats something we have to deal with in the mmo world, but hey its sqaure enix when was the last time u saw them royal fuck up? i mean they do but its far and few between.

SE can still mess up anyways, but yeah their track record is still actually great. I mean some of the FFXI expansion had a few issues when applied such as having PoL crowd outs when trying to activate the content, but they learned to make each one smoother than the next.
Anyone can make mistakes, but fixing them would be nice.
