Im running two PNY 8800 gt 512 mb cards in sli.

Would this card beat my 2 cards? Is it worth buying for 149.00

PNY   GeForce GTS 250 1GB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express

I ran 2x 8800's in my old system but upgraded to a EVGA GTS 260.  That said, i can tell you that the upgrade was a very nice improvement.  Just checked newegg.com to see what they're listing 260's for now (after looking at the link you provided for the 250) and id say its almost definitely worth the extra 30$ for this one if you can swing it:

    Just my two cents.

I do not really mind Nvidia, as I only a month or so ago, was using two 9800 GTX+ in SLI.  I was having software issues and was not even able to find updated bios information on my particular cards.  Nvidia and the Nvdia SLI forums were absolutely no help.  I became frustrated and I recently did alot of studying about ATI vs Nvidia.  My conclusion was that ATI has better driver software and the cards they are releasing are solid and not over-heating anymore (which is why I switched to Nvidia a few years ago).

I recently purchased http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102872&cm_re=vapor-x-_-14-102-872-_-Product and it is blowing away my old cards (even in SLI).  It runs clean and cool (thank you Vapor-x) and I am not having any of the software issues (thank you Catalyst).

I would encourage you do some research into ATI's 5000 series.  I am not a fanboi by any means, just someone who has been gaming for quite a long time.  I have time at work (when I finish real stuff) to do research and it paid off.  Let's just say that my benchmark tripled!

Good luck in your search and I hope this helps.

Your 2 8800GT's should be a bit faster than the GTS 250, you'd have to go higher than that to beat what you got.

what about performance, and graphics? will the 250 give me nicer graphics?

No.  thats what he means, you'd have to go higher than a single 250 in order to beat what you already have across the board.

The problem with compare SLI and a single card is that there are a bit too many variables on the user and hardware end.

Of course the GTS 250 strictly speaking is capable of outperform your current PNY 8800 x2 SLI, but if you like to overclock, then it becomes hard to say since it is no longer just a performance comparison.

When overclocking enters the picture, budget, risk, and whether the efficiency increase is worth the price need to becarefully evaluated, or else you might spend hundreds of dollars for barely any significant boost.  Overclocking forums and sites are useful usually.

If you don't always play games with bleeding cutting edge graphics, you might not need to get the new card.

If it was me I wouldn't upgrade quite just yet, but that is just me personally.

No , gts250 is a higher clocked 8800gts  .youll not gain much performance .If you want more performance look to better cards.Btw Are you looking for single card or sli upgrade ?

    prolly a single

Nvidia is too expensive for their performance right now. Look into an ATI 5850 (or 5950 if you want to go all the way). A 5850 will beat anything Nvidia has except the 295 (which is way more expensive and just barely beats the 5950).

anything out there that will beat my 2 cards under 220.00$

  • jagd1jagd1 Member Posts: 281

A bit hard situation ,your 8800GT cards in sli are still good performers and to find something better under 220$ to replace them is the hard part .There is ati 5850  but around 300$ . And if you are nvidia fan  i recommend to wait for new Directx 11 cards (last info is nvida launch their directx 11 cards at end of march ,)

Keep your cards until you can raise your budget.

Nvidia card is bad investment atm. Save up for 5850 or wait for next wave of new cards.
