Okay, you know those somewhat shady games that tend to be manufactured with no support and wholly reliant on micro-trans? Have you, dear reader, ever played one? I played Evony for a while and I felt dirty...it just felt shady. I'd get messages from people I didn't know posing as game admin and asking me account info just before you ignore them. Most people don't stay in those browser based games because they aren't fun..but there is a sense of discomfort knowing you may be funding the blackmarket in Norway or something.
At the beginning of the year I was thinking of a game to play until December. I've played them all; the current releases leave me somewhat dissatisfied. So I happened upon Aion 2.0 trailer and thought "Hell, that looks fun." Even though I had previously decided not to renew after my first month due to absolute boredom. There was hope, you know? In the shape of tinker-toy like houses being constructed and underwater exploration, I became excited. But I was hesitant..and so instead of opting for the full 12 month plan..I went with 3..just in case.
We'll I've been playing for only two weeks and I have had a bit of fun...but I realized something. I keep getting these messages, usually about 3-4 a day telling me to go to a site because my account was going to get suspended. At first I just ignored them and was done with it. But gradually these pseudo messages have increased in game, and have made me reconsider the whole MMO thing. I've played almost every MMO either at beta or launch, and the only other time I've gotten this feeling is when I play those creepy free to play browser games. Suddenly, I realized...perhaps through Aion I too am funding the blackmarket. It seems so shady. Whether it is in game gold sellers or this stuff, I'm getting the sneaking suspicion that something is wrong with this game and it has nothing to do with the grind. Does anyone get this feeling? I don't recall anything such as this in Eq,1 or 2, dark age, WoW, CoH, WAR, PoTBS, or Lotro.

Nothing? No one else?
It is just a phishing attempt, you just over think things. I am not sure how some get those message often and some doesn't get it at all. (I fall in the group of people who never gotten the phishing attempt message)
Aion isn't that grindy either, doesn't take much get to 50, but sometimes a player might not have made enough kinah to buy the good stigma since the level progression is relatively at a decent pace than kinah making could be. Assuming you are not one of the lucky bastards that got exactly the stigma that you needed or a expensive stigma.
However, Aion is definitely one thing. Heavily focus on PvP which does not always sit well with everyone's taste including my own at times. Maybe eventually they will release more varieties of PvE content, but so far Aion is a game that more relaxed PvE player might want to take a closer look before trying to jump into. If you enjoy competitive PvP everyday, then Aion is actually a damn good game.
Edit: Yeah so I guess, no real dirty feeling, at least not more than most of the games out there.
Nope, not sure what server you are on , but I haven't been spammed with even a gold selling tell in over a month.
No one has ever asked for my account, though I have seen Aions regular messages about the issue so I assume its a problem somewhere. (US Trinel is where I'm at, Asmo side).
Are you Eloys? If so that makes sense, scammers know you're all a bunch of naive noobs

No I only really fell very dirt when the girfrie...oh different kind of dirty my bad...carry on!
hehe...
Its really more like scammers know Elyos account is better use for business since Asmos are the ones more likely to buy Abyss Points, thus Elyos account are necessary.
All kiddings aside, my Elyos characters didn't really get those phishing message, on the other hand neither did my Asmo characters on a different server. I think it is really more like someone's past internet activities may have leaked their information, or scammer only goes after certain people because of unkown reason.
Wow. I was just called out as a "Noob" for playing Eloy. It's always been my experience that the wretched teenagers tend to play the "evil" classes. So I get to chose between naive "noobs" with old people drama on the good side and bitter angry teens on the bad side. I think I'll just go play ME2.
Seriously though, I'm spread across 3 different US servers. I get it frequently on each. Though my Asmo's indeed do not get it as much.
Sorry cant say i get that feeling.
hmm..I can't think what it would be. I don't play that often...you'd figure there would be some type connecting issue. If none of you have gotten them then it must be something other than random

A lot of times these people grab names from general or global chats. In MMOs I tend to avoid these chats and never really get spam tells or in game mail.
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
I never talk in public chat. Though I have to say...each of my characters have a De_____ name. Maybe they hate against the letter "D"
Never had a problem. Kind of weird to think that your doing something dirty when playing a game......well unless....you know.
Everyone has opinions, but does that make them the universal truth??? NO!
Koreans cant make real mmorpgs..they just spam these mmoprg that is the same but with different "skins" if you know what i mean.
I wish. I'm awful at multitasking.
I just went ahead and closed my account. I've still got a month so I'll see if it gets any better.
Maybe they like their MMOs that way

All I can say is that on Triniel I no longer see spam or gold selling advertisements in game.

Completely agrees how sometimes players lose sight about possible cultural preferences in gaming.
I think maybe the Koreans are wondering why NA players complains so much and like to say "hardcore" and "noob" so much when majority of our actions really comes across as whiny babies. All the while the Chinese are laughing at everyone else since arguing about games doesn't make money. Of course there are people in this world who are too busy thinking about if they can get something to eat tomorrow to care about who makes better games.
I made my character the hottest man i could. Then i took as much of his gear off as it would let me, turned off the lights, got the baby oil and spent some "me" time with the game.
I guess i felt dirty afterwards... mainly because the cat jumped up and got hair stuck all over the baby oil. I was going to wash it off but pretended it would be more fun to role play a Na'vi from Avavtar with the fat guy who lives next door and his single slutty 60 something mother.
I just wish my cat was blue and then the look would have been perfect.
If these games were not successfull or at the very least getting them profit they wouldn't come out this fast, so.. uhm nope your statement is wrong.

Dunno you but I seem more variety in f2p games then in p2p yes there are many that play almost the same but different skins but still there are more variety if you search a bit.

Actually I'm more inclined to agree with him.
However, there is some truth in what you say in that there is a slew of korean games that seem to be made just to soak up enough money so that they can then "do it again".
sometimes on this (or even other ) site(s) I'll see an advertisment for the latest releasted asian game and right there on the front is the cash shop and the game itself seems somewhat downplayed.
But games like Aion or Even Lineage 2 just don't fall into that category.
Yes they are a korean company but they do aim for something a bit higher. That is why I was very surprised when I played Lienage 2 for a few years and then decided to try another asian game and realized that those asian f2p games are very junky.
Even with the odd issues that L2 had at launch.

Actually, I wrote this thread concerning not just the gold spamming but also the hacking and account thefts. Yeah the gold farmers has gone WAY down. But I've rarely seen this amount of hacked accounts in a game before, especially this bad. Sure, games such as Lotro had spam via mail, occasionally, but I've yet seen something this insane. So I guess the question is why? Why are they able to hijack an account and then send fake links to other accounts? I saw through the attempt, but I'm curious about the average casual person who just happened to pick up the game and saw a tell: Your account has been temporarily suspended: For a formal inquiry, go to www.aiononlinet.com/secure....or something like that...of course the link is a virus. Why is Aion different in this regard?
Its a new age...game hackers will always target the new most popular games. It took a while with WOW but they are still hacking their too. Players have a responsiblity as well. Don't just blame Ncsoft.
