It depends on what you want in a game, really. If you want a rich, open world, an incredible story, and a strong roleplaying community comprised of mature, seasoned MMO players who are helpful and fun and not likely to insult newbies like WoW players do, LotRO is for you. If you like your MMOs quick and dirty with lots of dungeons to explore and don't care so much about open world, storyline, or roleplay, DDO is probably a better choice. I play both, myself, and think they both are worth at least trying.

Not really sure how you can go wrong by choosing LOTRO...It's about as solid an MMO as there is in the Market today...They are constantly adding content and improving the Game...The Community is solid and VERY loyal...Even when I try something else out for a while I always come back to LOTRO...It's a great Game...

    They are very different games.

Lotro is more your traditional MMORPG with more Depth and content than most and some very intersting and fun classes. It has a traditional sub model but is relatively cheap comapred to other MMOs

DDO is not presented Traditionally and really only shines if you cna find a group to regularly quest with, you cna solo but your progression will be much slower and the quest dungeons aren't nearly as much fun.It has a hybrid item shop/sub model. You can paly for free but your limited on what classes you can play(not too limited) and what zones you have access to...you cna either buy the extra classes and zones via the item shop or you cna sub and get them all included in the sub price. Also subbing gets you monthly item shop credits to spend on non class and zone stuff in there.

You can trial LotRO free for 10 days and you can play DDO free for any amount of time you choose. No reason you can't play both and make a decision.

I could go on and on about all the ways it's superior to WoW (and there are A LOT), but I don't want to bait the trolls.

In my opinion lotro is more complete as a mmorpg but ddo has better character development and combat.

Try both and take your decision.

Did someone put all the trolls in solitary confinement when I wasn't looking?

A bunch of constructive posts with thoughtful responses. Crazy

Anyway, I would agree with the premise of trying them both and then essentially relying on playstyle, player connections/grouping, and 'feel' to determine which will prevail. Both very nice in their own ways.

Well, DnD is free to play and LotRO has a free trial....so why not fire up both and figure it out for yourself?  Not being mean, but you'll best be able to judge which you want to commit to, if either, and the cost is nothing more than the short amount of time you play.

Both are good, but I preferred LotRO because of the open world, epic quest line and the option of solo and group play.  Both have interesting classes and races.  I do like DnD's combat system but the perpetual dungron crawl bothers me a bit.

Why not just try them?  I know LOTRO has a free trial because I've used it before.  And DnD is free to play right now so you can play it as long as you like.  In the end it's the only way you'll really know "which is better".  For all you know neither is any good to you.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

You can try both for free.

Your opinion is a lot more valuable to you than my opinion.

I'd go with LotRO, but that's me.

As others have said, theres good things about both, it really depends what youre looking for.

    Lotro:

    open world

    very deep & extensive lore

good for both solo and group content

great polish and lots of content wih constant expansions

a good variety of classes, though for the most part they do fall into the typical rpg roles (dps/tank/healer) without much customization (both in looks and skills/roles)

typical tab target & hotkey fighting (basically the same combat as WoW with some slight differences)

    DDO:

pretty much completely instanced dungeons/zones (some of the dungeons/zones are a pretty good size and could take you a good hour or 2 to play through to complete missions, but you wont come across anyone other than your own party in your travels other than in the towns)

lore isnt too bad, not a sgreat as lotro, but theres enough there to be worthwhile if you care for story/lore

the dungeons offer you difficulty choices such as solo, normal, hard, elite.... so it can pretty much all be soloed, or done with groups offering a lot of flexibility to both casual and hardcore players

very highly customizable characters, especially when it comes to builds. allocation of stats, skills, talents all effecting eachother as well as having the option of sticking with a pure class, or combining up to 3 classes in one toon to suit exactly your play style/role

not as polished as lotro overall, but still very good quality, especially for a f2p

very fun combat system with a bit of a twitch mechanic to it, manual aiming, hotkey use really depends on the class (some use em a lot, some very very little)

while the game is f2p with a cash shop, dont think of it as the typical f2p money sink, you do not ever actually need to spend a penny on it. everything can be earned through regular gameplay by accumulating Favor, which earns you cash shop credits (through quests, goals, etc) allowing you to unlock all of the content, races, classes, and helpful items. its up to you, nvest a little time racking up favor, or take the shortcut and pay for stuff. either way, theres no gamebreaking items in the shop, just a few small boosts to make your life in DDO slightly easier

I play both because they are 2 solid PvE MMOs but very different. Try them and see which one you enjoy the most or start with LotrO and then just play DDO on the side since its free.

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
