Real Cash Economy *Can a mod move to The Pub?*

What's everyone's thoughts on RCE? By Real Cash Economy, I mean games like Entropia Universe, Next Island, and AfterWorld.

I personally like the idea that the game has it's own economy, where you can buy land and craft items to make profit in real life (with EU anyways). I think it gives the game meaning, gives it a way better community, etc.

I know it's not for everyone, like those who believe you should work for what you get in game. But with RCE, you get what you work for, whether it be in game or IRL.

Playing - EVE, Wurm

Retired - Final Fantasy XI, Anarchy Online, Mabinogi

Waiting - ArcheAge, Salem

My personal game-savior Wurm Online has a RCE based on the typical copper/silver/gold coin standard, but 1 silver = 1 euro. The only way to make the money is buy it, work for/trade with those that do have it, or buy a village deed (fairly expensive) that comes with a merchant that spawns money regularly. From there, you only need to craft junk and sell it to the vendor for in-game money, and it basically pays the deed's upkeep and then some. Great system that I try to adapt and emulate when thinking of the "financials" of my personal GDDs.

While it's intellectually interesting, there are also pretty serious legal implications for such a game. It takes things out of the plane of being "just a game", and exposes not only the developers but the players to all sorts of possible real life complications that I for one would walk a mile to avoid.

Financially speaking, that's not a game, it's a job. I dont want to have to include my character sheet on my tax return.
