World of Warcraft will never have guild or player housing. Ever.
GOOD!
Player housing is the absolute worst idea the MMO form has ever seen. It removes people from the public spaces, fragments the community into cliques, alienates newcomers, either pollutes the countryside or erodes at suspended disbelief through the silliest sort of instancing, and in any case it breeds drama. Why can't we remove inactive players' houses? Why must we hold vacationing players hostage to upkeep fees? And so it goes.
I bought a house in LotRO once, next door to a few guildmates. In one of several dozen copies of the same area in which people who can't use magic somehow magically occupy superpositions of one another. No, I rented a house. From an owner not regulated by any housing laws but somehow forbidden to evict me for abandoning both the premises and payment months at a time. Somehow this simple transaction turned into a two hour long shitstorm wherein another guild took personally the fact that we were buying up land in an instance where they wanted to buy up land.
Which no doubt is by day a huge morale boost for the players who visit the neighborhood and see it empty of life.
But the crux is a healthy MMO has its endgame players out in the open where lower level players can envy them, talk to them, overhear a few of their conversations, hit them up for a favor now and then, and get to know who the prestigious guilds are by noting their names as they run around town. It's also patently ridiculous to see an empty town raided, by players or event monsters for that matter, and suddenly witness dozens of people warping in. That this happens at all is fine and unavoidable, but watching it happen in what moments ago was an empty town mocks any sense that it was ever a population center.
If there is one aspect of WoW that Blizzard has handled flawlessly, it is player housing.

Completely and utterly disagree. Player housing adds a personal element and a depth to MMOs that you could never find in a single player game. They are part of the "massive" part of the term.
Also, how does it fragment players? That makes little sense.
Ah, World of Warcraft Topics. Why not just give everyone axes and tell them to kill each other? No, seriously. They're both blood baths anyway.
As far as WoW is concerned, I can't wait for these changes. I admit, I'm purposefully avoiding as much Cataclysm related material as I can, but I can't help but take a peek at my presents sometimes. You know, give it a rattle every once in a while?

I agree. The whole point of an MMO and some online games is emerssion, customizing, and feeling like your part of the world. what better way to do that than with other options and choice for your avatar/character...I have played a few games my self wtih player housing, and honestly really never seen it create what u say to a disturbance to the community Xondar. Maybe you just had some bad exp. ?
It might be true that Guild Halls (when loaded with all features) might hurt the major citys from looking populated but individual houses will not have the same effect.
Only game I played with housing was EQ2 and I can honestly say it was my favorite feature in the game, along with the varied mix of races I could create. Oddly enough, all I ever made were dark elves and one Arasi.
but back on the topic of what I linked, player housing in WoW would create an atmosphere that would change the game for the better. it would bring back alot of the older RP crowd that seems to be so hard to find in the game these days.
these days its all - "I got my purp! Screw you guys, I'm going home!"
