Originally posted by Pasomatt Everquest 2's faq (which is offline right now for maintenance or I'd quote it) specifically states that the intention is to design a game that can be utilized by future systems. They also mention the 'gamble' they took requiring Everquest 1 to require a 3D card to play (when most STANDARD systems did not include them) and how it obviously paid off. Also if you try to set Extreme Settings in game (much like Doom 3) it will say: "No existing system can handle Extreme Settings" or some such. Definetely implying they are waiting for 512mb video cards, or better processors to come out. I can run the game fine on high preformance on low population servers or uncrowded areas.
I'm sorry if this sounds like trolling, it really isn't intended as such, but to me this whole bit sounds like nothing except a glorified marketing scheme by SOE. This very thing could be quite literally said about any game - "Mythic Entertainment announces today that the reason you are not able to play their game, DAoC, on 'super-elite-photorealistic-haxxer-roxxorzness-mode!!11!one!!1!' is that no existing system can handle the uber-eliteness of it all - but don't worry, it IS there and implemented into their engine already so that when you, the customer, are able to upgrade your system suffieciently to handle the power without melting your rig, you will be able to play the game using it.... in about five years or so...." Please excuse me as I go put on my hip-waders, because I'm sorry, but I'm not buying into that crap. This of course, for what it's worth, is my cynical opinion with a dash of critical thinking skills only and should be taken with a grain of salt (sorry for that banality).
Flame as you will, but I don't believe a single word of marketing hype; I can only stand hearing so many different ways of candy-coating the same crap - and I'm talking about the market as a whole, not just SOE. I will wait another couple of months to hear some reviews with actual substance in them to make my decision; not just some fanboi's spouting out "smoothest game launch in history," "most advanced graphics ever," "the game of the future," mere days, if not hours after the release; nor the critics with their equal lack of real substantial knowledge. True, first impressions are usually the greatest, but still, I will wait some months before making my decision.
You are right in this regard. SOE can only develop a game towards technology that has some concrete coding/examples let down, that is at most a year or two in advance, at best. Plus when they started working on the engine several years ago, they have upgraded, by the basics were planned for what you see now, and not too much into the future. They CAN up the amount of power that is needed, but only on the technology that is available for them to work with. Any new technologies developed in the future will need full engine modifications to make use of it, and that will most likely be in an expansion, if ever.
Originally posted by Puoltry Ok earlier in the day i was asking people to convince me to buy this game.So i was at target shopping and saw the thing on the shelf.$40.00 later and i bring it home. I had no problem installing it went real smooth.I setup the account etc etc.Now let me tell you about my system. Its not quite 2 years old: A nice fast Intel motherboard. P4 2.4 Ghz (hyper threading enabled) On board sound 1 gig of memory. Ati all in wonder 9700 pro. Dvd drive and a cd recorder. Ok now ive got that out of the way.So i log in to character creation and start creating.Well 1st thing i notice is most everything looks fuzzy.Very few sharp lines. So i shrug and think well i ll get through the tutorial and make some adjustments. The tutorial is well done. For new players this is a charmer for sure.it introduces you to basic mechanics and lets you hear the characters talking.(ive always felt we should be able to give our characters in games voices of our choosing)So you go up couple of levels and you land at noobie island. From here you speak to the npc that lets you decide your "profession"he gives you a quest to do etc etc.Ok so i decide to make some adjustments.I turn everything down to its lowest setting. So im messing around with the adjustments. No matter what i do the game runs in a very very choppy manner.Im getting low framerates.I did manage to get a bit of clarity out of it.But i sacrifice even more smoothness and fluidity of my characters movements. As a matter of fact i turned off all flora and the background was just bland. When other players/npc would come on screen i would get even lower framerates. Now as you can see my system isnt a top of the line "alienware"by any means but it does a pretty damn good job on most everything i play or do on it. Ive played a lot of games and mmo's on my system and they all run pretty good. Now im thinking at this point if its this choppy on noob island what would a city inEQ2 do?Well ill admit i didnt get to a big city yet but i did spend 2 to 3 hours getting to know the mechanics and i created 2 characters. To me its unplayable when i compare it to other games ive played. It doesnt run as smooth as i want it to.The bottom line here is im not going to buy a $600.00 video card to play EQ2.Im sure it would look great if i did.
Im not going to say it is a bad game.It clearly has a ton of content. If your doing quests on noob island instead of just killing to level up then SOE did a good job.Its just that i when i was playing it it all seemed so .....linear.It was like i was having my hand held the whole time. The waypoints and the lighted paths showing you exactly where to go. The screenshots on this website to me looked nothing like the game.Im not sure if SOE created a game that was ahead of my system but i dont think it should have looked as bad as it did. In other mmo's you can choose wich skills to improve upon right?Well from what i can gather its not this way in EQ2 you receive a preset order of skills as you advance. The skills themselves improve as you advance as well.Just for example in AO when you level up you get improvement points that YOU decide wich skill to put them into. Not so here the player just gets a new skill with the others improving. Now look i dont want to get flamed im trying my best not to be biased here.I can see how some players are going to love EQ2.But to me its like CoH perfect for players new to this genre of gaming. Its as if its been dumbed down from the original eq.The lure of the original was the challenges and the even harder solo aspect of it.Corpse recovery alone was difficult enough to keep noobs away from the game itself. No loss of levels,no xp loss and not losing items upon death?Folks i hate to say it but it doesnt even sound like a online mmo to me.Death in a mmo should be a dreaded thing especially at higher levels.I dont know maybe its just me but i desire more of a challenge than what EQ2 offers.I want to be able to tweak out the skills that I like and have complete control over my character. I kind of get the feeling that SOE put a lot of cash into marketing this game. The voiceovers and actors they hired for it.The graphics that are supposed to be the best out there. The movietheaters showing the making of EQ2.SOE puts a lot of cash into marketing the product i think they should be putting that into the GAME itself. I gotta say that after all the develpoment that went into this game im a bit dissapointed. No wonder there was no open beta (that i know of).I expected a lot more than what i experienced. It just wasnt good enough to keep me hooked on it. Ill be returning EQ2 to Target tomorrow.
Get a updated soundcard, and update your bios/chipset and the game should become playable. onboard anything USUALLY means subpar.
I hope you get your money refunded. I hate to waste money on games I don't like. Last game I did that on was Lineage 2.
EQ 2 isn't a game for the hard core player. Personally, I'm waiting for a game that doesn't run on dozens of different servers. - Those games belong in the past. One world for all is the way of the future.
Hope you get your money back bro... you are wise indeed to try right away, in a couple of weeks many others will be wishing the same... maybe at least they will let you use the credit on something else since you were smart enough to make the decision so quickly.
Sony has stated several times this game is designed with the future in mind. Today's systems won't run it like swiss choclate. Those of us with high end systems have to throttle down the settings and keep our drivers current but I think it's worth the trouble; I love EQ2.
Too bad the original poster didn't have a good experience since this game has a lot to offer.
Sorry to sound like a fanboi, but it is what it is.
And exactly what games do you bashers play? I play EQ2 because to ME it's the best game out today. I enjoy it. I wouldn't pay a monthly fee to play a game I didn't enjoy. So let me ask you. What game do you play? Let me think of some things to bash about your game. If you like a certain game, God forbid you'd love it if I went there bashing how crappy it was. But I don't! You like what you like. And I like what I like. Yet something drives you to come to a game that has nothing to do with you and then ya start degrading it? What's the reason you come here? Go play your game, go chat in your forum.
The original poster has had his main problem sorted and is now playing the game.
Fact is this site is now a total mess no one bothered to read his problems and when i did we talked and sorted it out .
Sad part is 99.9% of people here have no wish to help .
All you guys care is to troll or fanboi.
Fanboys immediately jumped on defense about his system(which is perfectly fine enough to play EQ2) .
Trolls immediately jumped on the game for poor programming.
Sorry but I think anyone that listens to either of this groups(points to nearly everyone above this post) is doing a bad thing.
I am happy he has his issues sorted and is now playing his free month and will then judge for himself if he likes the game or not.
Yes I do miss the days when mmorpg.com had like 10k members with only 100 active on this boards seems we had a smaller community but more helpful and certainly much more mature.
Hercules, you're absolutely right. Thanks for bringing this into perspective.
I, too, would like to see us be more supportive of eachother and not so quick to jump on the bashing-train. I assumed the original poster had given up on the game and all the other posts were bashing or fanboy-ing and didn't bother to read the whole thread.
Feel free the bash the games I want to play and play. It really helps put into awareness the craptivity of a game. I know for a fact EQ2 is set with the future in mind. Its commonly done in mmorpgs because they have to think about the future. What really blows the game for me is that some of the inhouse sony testers and some of the programmers and artists at SOE said they didnt like EQ2, as well as other people complaining about redundant problems that persist and other games have corrected.
Here is a list of games that I play:
Ragnarok Online(I know its crappy but its so easy to talk with its UI)
Dark and Light(or atleast I want to cause it isnt out yet and my system doesnt meet the reqs)
Well thats it, the ones I majorly play. I also like Worlds of Warcraft a little but some parts of the game bug me. If you wish for me to bash and troll this forum further please feel free to ask.
I'm really glad people who are on the fence are swayed by posts as ignorant as this one. It will really help to clear you indecisive people out of our groups. Here is a future thank you for not getting us anymore exp debt.
BTW, if you can't figure out how to make this game non-fuzzy on a radeon pro VC, you should go back to your Nintendo.
Don't get excited about a tax cut. It's like a mugger giving you back fare for a taxi.

Are we playing the same game Wotann? Not for Hard core players? Please dude lol its week 2 and there's not even anyone over 25 on any of the servers to my knowledge. If you want to go anywhere do anything in the game you have to work really hard for it. Alot of the wait and work is right up a real gamer's alley it just takes some patience and non fanboi mouth running to do it.
*cheerleads for Hercules* its awsome you helped him set his stuff up. Mind helping me? I get lag in Qeynos and zones that are really walled in like the Down Below and sometimes Stormhold. I know its something to do with my graphics, I've managed to set it up pretty damn good so far and rid of alot of the lag in most zones except the city lol, but some of that is server side busy hours.

well i think cities lag just about for everyone, once i get out into antonica or even the forest ruins i have 0 lag, and i'm running it with less that 1 gig, and a 5500 fx.

Im noticing something about these boards.... and thats this. There are 2 main types of posts...
A) Someone bashing/praising the game
someone dropping useful information or asking a question
Im noticing that post A has alot more replys, hmmm I wonder why. Maybe people just love to argue with eachother on stupid topics? I could post "this game sucks" and I bet id get 30+posts from morons telling me im an idiot etc and to stop wasting their time by making them read it. Its one thing if I title the post "Please Help" then i flame... But most of the topics clearly state "this is crap" yep people go in and try to prove them wrong? You think your post is gonna make a difference? Do you believe that what you say really matters to the poster?
I personally like EQ at this point, been playin from day 1 and still find it quite enjoyable, but i find the arguements on these boards even moreso. So if indeed people just do this because they love to argue let me put my 2 cents in... If you really want the flaming to stop on these boards then stop replying to their topics! It glorifys "this sucks" insanely. If you want it to stop, then quit replying... if u want it to continue so u can laugh at the stupidity.. keep telling 12 yr olds that they are wrong!! God knows that works.

It is the most fun i have ever had on my computer and one of the most complex and i don't have nearly as powerful a machime as you have and it runs great and has never crashed on me not even once! The depth and complexity is mind blowing. You obviously havent spent very much time learning the skill needed to master this game. And to compare this with CoH is ridiculous CoH shouldn't even be considered an mmorpg at all. Maybe for babies.....

Agree, onboard Soundcards borrow "juice" from the CPU, just get a decent SB (not need to spent a lot here) and the performance should improve.

No offense, but it sounds to me like you don't know how to use your graphics card.
A 9700 Pro should have no problem running EQ2 on low-med settings, which should look considerably better than anything you have ever seen.
Saying WoW looks like crap too further proves you inability to set your GPU.
Download the latest drivers from ATI, go into desktop properties > advanced > 3D, then change the D3D settings around to make the game look better.
Those settings are key. Learn about them and what they do, and try different combinations. I don't feel like teaching you how to use them.
