Yes i know this is going to start a storm, but it is also true. I have played both and even with all the bad karma galaxies has engendered, I have to say that it is a better game than STO.
With that said, let me explain my points. First I played galaxies in every version from beginning to present and I understand the who, what, when, where and why all the bad feelings that galaxies created in the gaming world. But I can take the current version of galaxies as it is and enjoy it.
Point 1: what the player can be. In STO you can be either a member the Federation or the Klingon empire as officers in either navy. In galaxies you can be 9 different professions, plus you can pick up beast master now as well. STO Does not have trader or mercenary professions, I mean I would love to be a Nausican pirate.
Point 2: what the player can do: In STO just fly around from mission to mission. Getting levels through combat, In SWG you can Do that as well as build say a player city, Just need some friends and some player made houses and some open flat ground, there you are with a bran new city that you and your friends own. You decide what you want in it where you want to put it. You can explore persistant worlds in galaxies, STO is all about small instances of ground usually analyze this, kill that type of stuff. The persistant worlds in galaxies allows for stable places to build, fight or dance, whatever. I haven't mentioned crafting because STO doesn't have it. So nothing there to compare.
Point 3: Spaceships, In STO you can have enormous starships, but you can't walk around in them. In galaxies you can, in fact you can now have Gunships Huge multi floored behemoths to fly around in, you can crew with 8 friends, Now the drawback there is that you have to have a crew to fly these things in combat, No such thing as a master pilot ship that fights with just itself.
Point 4: Content: Yes SWG has had years to make content, So I will stick to When Galaxies first started. The content then was/is a lot better than you get in any of the MMO's that have come out in the last few years. It seems we gamers have gotten soft in insisting on a fun game when we first buy it, not one where the only content was an endless set of missions that look just like the last one we just did.
Now for those of you who are going to start in on the lag issues that persistent worlds have as a reason to have instances let me point out that I was running SWG on high graphics with little to no lag during the massive player/NPC battles going on with the latest publish. Also I will point out that STO has frame rate issues that can damage video cards.
Ok let the fight start and have fun to all

good points - perhaps a bit moot since the current mishap has, perhaps, alienated the STO players to the point of fail for the game. Time will tell. Didn't like SWG, and Thought STO was too limited, just flying spacecraft, no going down to the worlds. If I wanted to just fly spacecraft I would go back to EVE.
I think you're absolutely right that it is a better "game".
Its an absolutely awful Star Wars game, however.
List an MMO on this site, almost any MMO, and it will be a better game than Star trek Online.
In other words, the bar is set so very low that you're essentially saying nothing when you say that SWG is better than STO.
Don't forget, SWG has full 360 degree movement in space battles. While, in STO, you have what seems to be no more than 45 degree angle tilts.
I do not like SWG as much as before pre-CU . . but in its current state it is the best it has been since then. They have steadily improved on it. If you started it thinking of it as a new game. . old perceptions out the window it is decent. STO. . glad I didn't buy into the hype. All I saw on the page was reviews. . interviews. .screenshots trailers etc.
I will never ever ever pre-order a game again. . did WAR and AoC. . lesson learned.
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
Before we begin...
I have to state that I am one of those angry SWG vets and I want my game back......
But moving on...
I played STO in Beta / Prerelease and now "Live" and I have to say that I agree.
STO has been rushed out and in no way is a polished game and has a feel of a game that should have been released two or three years ago.
Anyone bored of the "Loading..." screen yet?
In pre-CU / NGE you could build a character you wanted to be - I was never a key hitter PVE or PVP player - I was more of a thinker / solo player and it allowed me to build a crafter that also had limited healing abilites and was also a sniper so I could do whatever I felt like - Some nights I logged on and did nothing but run about and find stuff and craft from it - I enjoyed hunting for the best quality of materials and then investigating how to improve something to make it better.
STO sucks - Hell - I might even go back to SWG just to run around again with nothing stopping me
What mishap ?????
Jeez - This is what happens when you don't log in to a game....
It's amusing to hear that Star Wars (which I associated with an elegantly-made trilogy of action/hero movies) is the more introspective of the two while Star Trek (which I associated with plots of warring philosophical viewpoints) is the action hero game.
And yes, I'm mostly focusing on each series' strengths with those associations. They all have their mishaps (although honestly the latest Star Trek movie was pretty solid as far as action flicks go; even if it ditched most of the interesting philosphical confrontations.)

After combat was no fun anymore in SWG I turned to crafting. After TCG crafting was no fun because everyone saved their creds for boosters and loot cards at crazy prices and what good is crafting what nobody will buy right? So STO failed me bad, and I'm left with no MMO for now but that's ok.
Get your fact straight. You *can* beam down to planets for ground missions. Ground combat is pretty horrible but it is there. Gosh, can you at least check a review first .. or just look at some screen shots?
STO = yet another sub par MMO by a sub par and dishonest developer. I'd be hard pressed to name a worse MMO than STO. Maybe Champions Online...
SWG is a much better game, even NGE version. But I am still having fun playing STO for the moment and I hope the game gets better over time.
One of the main things I liked about SWG was the rp factor. It really was an mmoRPG.
Agreed i didnt buy the game but i tryed it my buddy's house and after 5 whole mins i was dude.....really. i mean c'mon talk about a blow to star trek and to the fans then go and screw them over. sorry to say everyone should cancel there sto subs just prove a point. but just remember if you have to sub the game active your supporting them in there dishonest ways.
IN THE FACE!
I think SWG is a better MMO, as STO is not really a MMO from what I hear. Not sure it is the better game though, it is hard to compare games not even in the same genre of gaming.

sorry that my lack of interest in a product not worthy of the title game led me to not know that you could beam down. Who cares? I would not play the game if they paid me.
A bit like comparing a rotten apple with a stale acorn, but yes... SWG is the better game of the two, and if I was a developer, that would make me sad panda.
"This is not a game to be tossed aside lightly.
It should be thrown with great force"
bah, everything is better than STO, no honor or glory in beating that failed game.

You care enough to state something that is obviously wrong. Sure it was a bad game and I am also not playing it but i found the attitude of just stating imaginery facts disturbing. That is why I call it out.
I wasn't trying to say anything exept that a game made 5 years ago is a better game than one that just came out. I mean really, We gamers need to insist one a game that entertains us with more than just eye candy. I REALLY like to guild, I have always compared gaming to my friends who don't game that it is the equal to playing checkers/chess in the local park, the difference being that i can play with a person from across the world. But what i really want is for developers to stop whining about how much it costs to make a game, and put some real substance in one. STO is not or may never be a great game, but like all of those crackerjack games that have come out over the last few years it's like playing champions online except with starships, and champions is like heroes except better graphics. I don;t know about all of you but I would love to see an MMO that started with content and player options instead of an empty promise from the developer that it is comming.
Sorry for the rant, but I see no reason for me or anyone else to pay up front for anything (Games included) that isnt finished!
STO will be a better game, if they follow the Guild Wars model... no sub, and boxes each few months... but publisher wants bucks.... ring ring, life time subs???
Even though I havent played STO, I am 100% sure SWG is ALOT better game than STO! In fact, I belive STO is so crap, that I would not even throw away my time on a free trial.
If I meet anyone in real life who plays STO, I will certainly mock them and have a real good laugh. Havent met anyone yet who plays STO, and not even heard about any who does. My guess is this 'STO' game is about to be shut down very soon. If so, good riddance. Last thing the MMO world needed, was another (epic) fail release.
Make us care MORE about our faction & world pvp!
lol yea reading the STO forums seems that masses are quitting due to the publisher giving away 60 free days of play time, and theyve also recently trialed a lower price for the game itself, but the people that bought the lifetime subs i feel sorry for because i can't see it lasting 2 years.. I have got 2 friends that play it, 1 of them is Star Trek mad so loves the space combat but he did say one interesting thing - bear in mind we both play EVE - he said not to bother getting it as EVE is vastly better and STO doesn't offer nearly as much. My other friend has already cancelled his sub after 1 month, i think he intends on going back to it but won't be for another month or 2.
I would really like to try STO just to see what all the fuss is about rather then reading peopls opinions but the chances of them offering a trial is between 0-0.1% lol
That's not really saying much though, is it? Just about any game on the market is better than STO in its current state. There's not much love for STO even in the STO Forums.
I tried the Beta, and didn't like most of STO. A friend of mine bought the game, has given up on it already and has said I can play the game until early April, at which point his subscription runs out. I just can't be bothered to even boot it up - starship combat was fun while it lasted, but I'm just not interested any more. The game engenders THAT little enthusiasm, so, yes, I can well believe SWG is a better game!
It's...following me....
I come to the SWG forums to prepare for some much needed MMO rehab on an old favourite...and ..'IT' followed me here!!!
We need to stop STO, it's becoming a plague thats infecting the forums, it's started to take star wars galaxies!
(I really don't mind STO, overpriced, but so shallow, give me SWG!)
Longing for Skyrim, The Old Republic and Mass Effect 3
As much as I like to hear something positive about SWG, there are alot of people working a good deal on STOs new content. I read just today on the new stuff there planning on adding, interriors of ships which, has settled some of the unrest about that topic.
