Asian style MMO yay/nay?

DeeweDeewe Member UncommonPosts: 1,980

While browsing Project Empire (Forsaken World) pics, I realized there's something that would turn me away from any Asian style based MMO even if it's much more polished than WoW, has all fluffy stuff I'm dreaming of, and is 100% free:

The characters style and the in game effects and animations. I just can't stand the style.

It reminds me of Lineage II, I played the beta for about an hour till a player said in global chat: "does all elves runs as if they just had one hour of anal sex?" We had a good laugh and both /quit.

So I'm wondering what's your view on the subject?

Abilities' animations are way flashier than they need to be, over-sized weapons and armour, and teddy bears wielding giant lollipop swords. That's my main beef with the korean style.

Obviously some people will like it and some will hate it. Does this really require a thread?

    And yes, it's a nay.

    I just hate it.
I much more prefer FE or DF style. Even if animations are average and some people say world colours are too brown I still find it a lot more appealing. People have just different tastes. Some like manga, while others hate it.

As well as that, the lame martial arts screams that are a constant (and I mean CONSTANT!) "feature" during combat really get on my nerves.  When I was trying Aion out, the combat had the most irritating sound effects I have EVER heard.  I had to reduce the volome almost to silence just to endure it.

The 'running' animations in Korean MMOs are particularly gimp, and has all the characters leaning forwards about 30 degrees whenever they run. The 'running' & 'footstep' noises are usually just like two pencils tapping on a table - most irritating.

Still remember, that each country has their own distinctive style, which can be a complete opposite. Can't lump them into one "Asian style".

Yes for me when it comes to Asian MMOs. I love them ;)

And I will surely try TERA when it comes out. Can't wait to see what the old vision of Lineage III was ;)

Yeah people always for get that India is part of Asia as well. Hmmm now that I think about it I wonder if there are any MMO's from India. But I'm a big fan of Japanese games,  Final Fantasy is probably my favorite game series of all time.

  • dar_es_balatdar_es_balat Member Posts: 438

That lollipop stuff is pretty "Asian" although I'm sure many nationalities there would disagree with the use of that term.   Maybe I should narrow it down to eastern Asian, though that doesn't really solve the problem, as the nationalities in central Asia generally don't stress over petty nationalism, and thus aren't angry.  Its generally the eastern Asian countries that historically want to clearly define cultural lines.

    So let me clearly say:

The lollipops, teddy bears, and in general pedophile oriented artwork is eastern Asian in flavor.  You see it in Korean games.  You see it in Japanese games.  You see it in Chinese games.  And you see it in games from Vietnam.   That's not to say that all games from eastern Asia are meant to attract pedophiles.  That's simply to say that games from this region tend to unabashedly embrace this element and accept it into the wider local genre, where they gain maketability and eventually export status.  Western games do not.

You don't see it in Russian games, but Vladivostok isn't exactly a hub of MMO generating activity.  They tend more towards raw materials outbound from Siberia and Kamchatka.  So not all of eastern Asia may apply...

"Yeah people always for get that India is part of Asia as well. Hmmm now that I think about it I wonder if there are any MMO's from India. But I'm a big fan of Japanese games, Final Fantasy is probably my favorite game series of all time. "

India isnt part of Asia.  India is part of India.  Separate continental plate.  Theres a big mountain range that marks the border between the two, roughly.

me the only issue i have is when i see a sword or dagger etc and i see a trail of blazzing fire or whats not behind the weapon come on they tried that in hockey and listener hated it because hockey wasnt a cartoon.same here

if i hit someone with a sword will you see a trail of fire where i swoop the dagger or the sword of caurse not ,you ll see maybe spark if i weir steal or if it hit my steal weapon but spark on wood ?hell no you ll see wood splinter, dust etc

thats the thing i dont mind fantastic looking but if im a warrior and i do more flashy then a mage?why would i rolle a mage lol!

dagger the only thing you ll see is blood spatter every where

but now its to the point of sillyness they all have a trail of fire behind the weapon come on if at least it was slowmotion i would understand but its not that .its one reason i downgrade asian game a bit

do it more realistic cartoon!if its supposed to be poison and blood you dont see poison you see the effect thos froth around the mouth etc

we dont become green as hulk because were poisoned lol might turn skin white or grayish but thats about it!

it would be more specatcular if it was done like in real life but cartoony like pw that would impress me but what we see in past asian game beurk .i get tired of seeing the over flash after 2 hour of gameplay and i go play something less flashy but = good looking!

I agree with you. Girls that act, stand, and move like runway models? No thanks. Fighting in 6 inch heels? No thanks. Wearing next to no armor? Well, maybe, but only if it's done right. Ballerina combat where you spin around, jump, and scream "HA! HAIIIIII-YA!" every second to kill any enemy? No thanks. Over-sized weapons and armor? No thanks.

Some light Asian influences are cool, like Night Elf buildings in WoW. I like Asian architecture most of all.

And I'm half Japanese. I don't mind (most) anime, but please keep it out of my MMOs.

I tend to prefer the Art Design of Asian games because they can be quite fantastical.

Where I don't like them is when they add the "cuteness factor".

Take out all the cuteness and it would be perfect.

I can't think of one western fantasy mmo where I actually like the art design.

hmmmm, I suppose Conan would be the only one that comes to mind as it perfectly embodies the Conan Universe.

I'm fine with asian art styles.

Thus far asian MMO styles have prevented me from having fun.

I don't mind anime/asian-style graphics so long as the gameplay makes up for it. There are very few MMOs that have accomplished this in my mind but there's still a few :þ

I don't really care about the style of the game. As long as I am having fun in it, I would keep playing it. Though I do admit that I actually prefer the cartoon-anime style that these games have. I don't know why, it's just that it is asthetically more pleasing to me than the majority of the western MMO art styles. I prefer my worlds bright and colourful, not dark, deary and depressing. There is a reason why I play MMOs, and for some reason, I can never have fun in a world that is dark and depressing.

I also love games that take place during the dynasty period in China. I love the Chinese periodic costumes, and the emphasis on heroism and martial arts. I've always been extremely interested in martial arts, and I have to say that it is a lot more realistic than all the sorcery and magic we see in a lot of western MMOs.

Actually, I used to love MMOs that use sorcery and magic and all that, but most recently, I've been getting very sick of those, since the majority of the games I play have those. Now, I'm into merlee weapons (which also includes martial arts), science fiction, and first person shooters. Oh, and of course, games based in Ancient China.

    Main characters:
    Jinn Gone Quiet (Guild Wars)
    Princess Pudding (Guild Wars)

  • I do love the Asian art work when it comes to char models and such. However i cant stand it when they add little cutesy random things in their games. Tera looks great...cept for them damn pandas. Guess I prefer dark, more mature settings and environments.

    yay x100

I much prefer the Asian style art to anything western.

Despite being a fan of anime & manga and being quite interested in many things from Asia, I haven't met a single so called Asia style MMO I liked, even the "westernized" Aion. So far I must therefor say NAY.

Mostly my point of view. Like I find AoC new expansion theme very interesting, it's based on an Asian type of world but lacks all the annoying above features.

Haha, same! That's why I liked Guild Wars Fractions so much as well, the architecture really was beautiful, and it was based on Asian culture as well. Even the armour, outfits and names were Asian, and as a result, it felt so much like a lost home that it ended up being my favourite Guild Wars campaign.

Even the maze that was Kaineng City, which a lot of people didn't like particularly because it was a maze, was comfortable to me because it reminded me of my own country's layout. Though of course, without all the squallor, dirt, wooden buildings and obvious poverty, thankfully.

Nay. Cant like the art style and cutesy voices. I cant even stand to play single player JRPG's.
