Looking for some singler player goodness

Toquio3Toquio3 Member Posts: 1,074

Being settled on a couple of good mmo experiences, I've been looking for some budget priced goodies on the internet. I have Torchlight already so lets skip that. Been thinking about Overlord and how cool it is. What I 'd like to know is if there are any forgotten single player gems out there that I'm not aware of.

So forget Mass Effects, forget Oblivions and Fallouts. I'm looking for underdogs here. Let the suggestions begin =)

I assume you mean just for the PC?

Neverwinter Nights, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fate (torchlight is like the sequel to this, but fate has a better character design), Diablo obviously, Revenant (uber old, play with speed turned up), Divine Divinity, Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor.

Those are just some of the cd's I have handy, I could litterally write for hours if my memory was better haha. If you havn't played NwN then omg, though i'd imagine you have, so definatly give Divine Divinity and Pool of Radiance a look if you want something old.

Yeah I have NwN, I think its the collector's edition, it has a nice cardboard box, with maps and a thick book too. I really liked it. Always had the impression that NwN2 wasnt very good though. Maybe I should look into it. Good suggestions, definitely worth a look =)

NwN2 is just as good, although you NEED to download alot of update/patches in order for the game to look as it should and run like it's supposed to. Out of the box, the game is completly broken.

Oh found some more.. Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines(very much like oblivion), Legacy of Kain: Defiance/Soul Reaver/Soul Reaver 2, The Last Remnant (this is fairly new but I just recently tried it and can't believe I missed it)

Far Cry and Far Cry 2 get my vote. If that's what your looking for anyway. Both have open worlds and great graghics. The original goes down a sci/fi monster path, and 2 is straight combat with awesome AI.

Ah the good old legacy of kain series, played those alot back in the playstation day. vampire sounds great, its a classic, Im aware, that I never played. That'll change =P

Also, about Far Cry, when I first tried it, my PC wasnt really up to par with its quality, perhaps it deserves a 2nd go.

Check out gog.com  They have a ton of great classic games at decent prices.  Been playing the hell out of Arcanum myself, single player wise.

Can't go wrong with The Witcher Enhanced Edition.

The Witcher and Mount & Blade if you want a RPG. I just got Tropico 3, which I'm enjoying a lot. It's a city building & economy with very charming Cuban style. For horror I definitely recommend Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of Earth.

Waiting on Xsyon & betaing stuff

personally am more into strategy gaming so let me know if you want any suggestions there or if u want to know of any free games that may be worth a download

I have been taking a look back at some old games recently and I found some gems.

Sid Meier's Railroads is a fun and very addictive game if your into building up style of games.  Been playing it alot and just love it.

Divine Divinity is a very good game for RPG fans.

For more of a strategy game - Master of Orion 2 is the best of the good old turnbased space games.

For NWN2 you will need all updates to get it worht playing.  Played through the orginal game but could do with more of an intresting battle system Imho.

Two more from indie companies that focus on gameplay (just like Torchlight)

    Hinterlands Orc lords

    Trine

    Both great games.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I'm checking virtually every one of them out =)

I'm currently playing Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines and I'm totally in love with it. Went so far as to get Redemption. Plays like a vampire version of Torchlight to me. Not a bad game either imo.

I also got Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth, and it seems pretty good. I'm looking into getting the Penumbra games too (Overture, Black Plague and its x-pac, Requiem).

I'm well acquainted with Braid and Trine, might get them on Steam.

I think I'm on a 1st and / or 3rd person action / adventure binge right now. I've heard about Arx Fatalis (only 5€ on Steam) and it seems to be a fantastic Ultima-style RPG. I'm also looking into The Experiment, it seems to do things a bit differently for a point and click adventure game. I already have Beyond Good and Evil and Psychonauts in the genre. Any other gems out there?

Try the demo for 'Eschalon: Book 1'. Only about a 30mb download. Can't go wrong. They just released 'Eschalon Book 2' on Impulse. Some people love this game. Really gives you the old school rpg feeling like that of Might and Magic, etc.

The original Sacred is cheap and good, IMO.

    +1 to Eschalon.

When I finally switched my primary PC at home from Windows to Linux, I was looking for some decent games with native Linux clients. I found Eschalon and World of Goo -- both wound up in my top 10 favorite games list.

Eschalon: Book II is out now. Definitely picking that one up.

    Majesty 1 and 2

    Sacrifice

    Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2

Have you tried Risen, or Divinity 2? Decent games similar to The Elder Scrolls series in some respects.

Yeah Risen is also worth a look. I loved it at first though, I found it to get rather crap after the first half. Ending was appauling in my opinion. Cant comment on Divinity 2 as I've never played it. Been on and off about the idea. The combat looks crap to be honest. Also I hear you can switch between male and female genre throughout the game whenever you like. What the hell?

Also bought Drakensang the other day. So far it's pretty good and worth playing. Not long and the expansion will be out too.

So in one sentence you say you can't comment on Divinity 2 but then you go on to say the combat looks like crap and you heard you can change sex through the game?

The combat in the game is brilliant and taking dragon form is brilliant as well. It had some problems being converted for consoles but so did Dragon Age Origins and many other PC games.

You can get it very cheap now and you are doing yourself an injustice if you don't try it and make up your own mind.

It came out the same time in America as Dragon Age Origins which was an over-hyped same old bioware shiny movie crap, play one bioware game and you have played them all.

Drakensang is a very good RPG which is more akin to Dragon Age Origins but it's sandbox and really shows how linear Dragon Age Origins is. The new expansion that has been out in germany for a while now offers fully voiced content and some great new features.

I recommend the game to any avid RPG fan that like BG.

You make a good point. I should not have said anything about Divinty 2. I may actually end up loving it if I gave it a shot. To be fair I didn't say the combat is crap, I said it looks crap. I have watched a few gameplay videos. I have not seen enough to be so hasty in attacking the game though. There are people out there who love the game and say it's better than Dragon Age and I have seen it cheap recently so I may finally pick it up myself.

Glad to hear you like Drakensang, I played it further after work yesterday and it's getting even better. Looking forward to the expansion. I really like the graphics in the game.

In the end it's definately worth checking out the demos for ALL these games as RPG's are so few and far between.
