Heya  Buddy   first off   I feel for ya  man...  I just  got let  go  on Thursday..  so  i know  whatcha mean  bout  the bank account thing.    Hopefully  you find something soon!

K  back when Champions  came out  i did the free month and canceled a week before time expired.  Got e-mail and all as well.  2-3 months  roll  by,  I signed up for the free open beta..  a week -- to 10 days  later  my back statement showed  they charged for COonline   @ 41.97   I call bank  they temporary replaced  the money.. Visa  investigated,  they ordered me a new card.. so this  can't happen  again.  They  ( visa and Wachovia)  told me  they had a few complaints  then about it,  and told me all that will happen  is when enough people have this done to them, that Visa  will put them on a list  and  will not honor charges  from them.  But  the bank  must  give you   your money back  +  the over draft frees.   also  if your bank was like mine,  which it sounds  like it is..  35  for  overdrawn / overdraft,   then also a 35 dollar charge  for the actual nsf  totalling 70 bucks  for  the same purchase...  I would recommend  that you tell  your  bank  you want to opt  out of the overdraft...  so that way  if you ain't got the cash...   it  won't  rack up charges  for ya.

It's worth it to consider putting Internet transactions on a prepaid card. It may cost 3 to 5 dollars more in the end, but the security of not giving out banking information to people you know nothing about is well worth it IMHO.

Credit cards are the safest form of online payment. If Cryptic charged me for a month after I cancelled, all I'd have to do is call up my bank and issue a chargeback.

The OP is having trouble with his bank account, so it sounds like he used PayPal or some kind of direct payment. This is never, ever as safe as using a credit card, and I'd recommend people never use this type of thing for any online payments.

You hit it right on the head.

I use the CC for all online stuff and have been happy I did. The 3 or 4 fraudulent charges I have had to deal with over the years were easy to get fixed, for one simple reason:

When you use a Debit card, the money in play is yours, when you use a CC, it is the bank's money until you pay the bill.

Not surprisingly, the banks are much more interested in getting their money back, than yours.

I use my debit card for ATMs only.

Why so many people giving moral lessons "OP stop playing games and go look for a job, you have no job therefore you deserve no entertainment until you find one!"? It's his life and we know nothing of it and to top it off it was not the point of the thread.

His complaint seems valid, he has no obligation to keep spare money in his account in case someone decides do charge him without his consent, and in this case it is for sure if his subscription canceled e-mail is legit. Cryptic actually caused him damage here, especially if he is now screwed up since he has a tight budget and they decide to charge $15 from his dry account which became $70 because of overdraft fees.

This isn't the first time that I've heard of people being charged after canceling their accounts. Usually it's a mistake, but the large number of people affected seems to point at a *dons tin-foil hat* more sinister approach, I think.

Also, please do stay on topic guys. You were warned once by a mod. :O

So someone who is unemployed should never get Christmas presents? Should never sleep or eat or have any sort of leisure time? What are they supposed to do when businesses are closed? Are they not allowed to be entertained at all when out of work?

Another person without any sort of connection to reality. Can we get back on topic?

I read somewhere (can't cite where) that many MMOs have a huge percentage of players who pay the monthly fee, but don't ever log into the game. It wouldn't surprise me if one tactic used by shady MMO companies (read: Cryptic/Atari) was to conveniently "forget" to stop charging people after they cancelled their accounts.

If the OP had thousands of dollars in his account and money constantly going in and out of it, there's a chance he might have never noticed the erroneous Cryptic charge. If I use my credit card a lot in a single month charges can sometimes slip past me. You have to be ever vigilant with your money.

One thing to take away from this is never ever use a bank debit card to charge things online. If you do the people that have the number can withdraw money from your account at will. When you use a credit card you can go to the card company and refuse the charges and most of the time they get reversed if you have good cause. When you use a debit card this is much harder sense the money has been taken from your account getting it put back is much harder.

No not really because i use both a debit and a credit card , i pay online things with my debit card , and i've have weird charges before , all i do is call my bank and ask to talk to my bank lady and tell her i didn't authorize this, ill go down and sign a paper ( bank is 100 meters from me ) , she will then file a chargeback with PBS ( They handle any and all transaction made in Denmark with both debit and credit cards )

    http://www.pbs.dk/en/products/Direct-Debit-service/Pages/default.aspx

Some info for thoose interested, in english of course, any payment can be taken back since your in your full right to do so, your money and if you didnt authorize it they just best cough up thoose money.

Besides ive allready printed out several pages of people claiming exactly the same as me with being charged for something they cancelled, so first thing tomorrow when i have time , im heading to the bank, i know its only 15 dollars, but its my 15 dollars, not cryptics.

Well I've been playing MMO's since 1999 and not once have I been charged any OD fee's if the monthly sub isn't in my bank, all that has happened is that my game account is frozen once that month is up (you pay in advance don't forget) and that I have had to reactivate the account once I have sufficient funds in my account to pay.

Though this is in the UK so things must work very differently in the US as none of my subscriptions have ever been demands for cash but requests due to the fact your paying in advance.

In Lydecks defense, it is utterly stupid to spend money on a video game if you're unemployed. That doesn't mean a person can't entertain themselves and have leisure time but they need to find a more economical way to spend it due to their financial limitations. For instance exercise is a great way to spend your off time and yes, I personally find it leisurely. Reading a book, the library is free. Games the person already has that don't cost a monthly fee or even better board and family type games that can be played with loved ones. If there is an instrument in the house, pick it up and learn it or if you already know it, keep up with it. Any number of things.

Besides the time spent playing these video games, that person could have easily missed an opportunity for the job they were looking for. Instead they where here, dicking around.

Oh and you're examples of eating and sleeping....are you really that dense?

Let me ask you this... Are you that dense? The OP repeatedly said IT WAS A GIFT WITH A FREE MONTH.

Please read the WHOLE POST before replying.

    Thanks.

Good argument. Nice to know there are people out there to argue for those who are not responsible with their money. Finding my argument silly yet some guy who said "So the OP shouldn't be able to eat and sleep?" in argument against someone who argues for financial awareness goes unmolested. Priorities my friend.

Never mind the fact that he still kept his card information on his cryptic account knowing that he didn't have the money to spend. OP still should have known better than to think just canceling the account with a company seeming to already have such a bad reputation would have kept him from being billed. Not so free now, huh?

Fact of the matter is you shouldn't have any monthly subscription to any service you dont need if you're unemployed. Game, television, magazine, etc. I'll favor internet for the simple fact that it is pretty important for job searching these days. Anyway, I've made my point so I'm done with this thread.

    P.S.
Originally posted by Xondar123 So someone who is unemployed should never get Christmas presents? Should never sleep or eat
Yeah, I make the silly arguments...

i think the only real point you've made is that you don't think very much of people who are unemployed, something to bear in mind if you ever find yourself in the same circumstances. dont you think?

Yes, as stated above, I received a confirmation of cancellation email at the time I cancelled.

Just send that to your bank and they will have no issue refunding the money. It happens a lot and if you refute the claim and get it reversed completely (Had to do that for another MMo) because I claimed it was charged without permission they sent it to the fraud securities and had it cleaned up within a week. Yeah it is a pain and Cryptic should get a slap on the wrist for it, but so many gaming companies let this slip it is becoming the norm for this type of failure so always check your bank statement after you cancel an MMo.

I removed my card info from my account.  Honestly when I cancelled, I didn't think to do that because the other MMO's I played in the past erased my billing info when I cancelled.  I have never had to manually cancel it out like that.

Going to the bank first thing in the morning to plead with the bank manager to remove the overdraft fees, hopefully he will be cool about it with all the proof I have.  Wish me luck!

Oh and thanks to the moderators for trying to keep the personal attacks at bay.  It amazes me how compassionless and cold some people are about people out of a job, especially the state the economy is right now where millions are out of work.

Anyway, will check back in tomorrow when i get back.  Thanks!

    [Mod Edit]

    As to the OP:

Thank you. I had canceled before my 30 free days were up to and had not bothered to check to see if I had been charged until reading your post. Good luck in your searches for employment as well.

This whole STO fiasco is starting to cross from comical and lol to tragical and borderline criminal.

If only someone was willing to test Cryptic in court for some of their practices.

I care about your gaming 'problems' and teenage anxieties, just not today.

Plunger? Maybe because when you try flying down or up, it resembles circling the toilet bowl. The corkscrew idiocy.

Well I got my bank to remove the overdraft fees thank god.  Now I have to wait for the affidavit to go through to get the 15 bucks back.

Trying to call Cryptic now to try and get them to reverse it on there end, but that seems to be futile.  Been on hold now for 42 minutes, still haven't talk to anyone ...

  • RuytooRuytoo Member Posts: 17

At 47 minutes on hold, I got disconnected yay!

Called back and instead of choosing the acount billing issues option, I chose the account creation issues option and somone answered within 2 minutes.  Funny how that works.

They are transferring the money back to my account, although they said it will take 2-5 days.  So all is well now.  Hopefully the others that were charged errornously as well have as good luck.  Thanks!

While I can understand getting cheezed off about this, I really wish people would try to resolve their issues with the company before posting a subject line implying that said company is intentionally screwing over customers.  It's very irresponsible.

The reason I put the subject line as that is because there are quite a few people that were charged errornously.  I found yesterday alone at least 15 to 20 posts around the web about it.  And its not just people that cancelled.  People that signed up for lifetime, 1 year, 3 months, or even those that had more than 30 days a free game time from buying multiple game copies where charged $14.99 on March 4th.   This isn't an issolated issue.

EDIT:  And no where in my post or heading did I say they intentionally screwed me, I said they are billing people in error.  Intentional or not, its still fraudulent.
