Hi, my name is Kanisha Morris.
During my time as a psychology major at Boise State University , I have been lucky enough to enjoy the trust of the faculty with an IRB approved research study.
I have chosen MMORPG and the personalities involved for my particular area of research. With well over ten million players, MMORPG's in general represent a large and new development in modern society.
I have recently completed my initial research process and turned in my application to the Boise State University Internal Review Board. With these two major footsteps completed, I am ready to begin the data collection phase of the study.
It is my hope you do not consider this a hoax, I am hoping to build my name in the world of psychology and publish my findings.

For a psychology major you've got a lot to learn about asking other people to do something for you. Your post is all about you and what you want from the guinea pigs for your research. That's a rather self centered approach to asking others to aid you. I'd suggest you work on that if you want to continue to study humans. They tend to have feelings and thoughts and express them better than real guinea pigs.
To you, we may be test subjects. To us, we are people.
Guinea pigs??? NO! I only hope to utilize what knowledge can be gained from this experience to better serve the general populace. In fact, psychology exists to help and understand people better, not put them in little boxes and label them. You mention that I have in fact little to no experience in attempting to get people to do what I would like for them to do. Let me explain a couple of things for you, and hopefully for anyone else that may have questions.
1. This is my first study, and I would hope that there would be a level of understanding by people who know that a person is not going to be perfect at ANYTHING first attempt. Practice takes perfect. So please, bear with me.
2. I would hope that if there would be any questions, concerns or comments (and by comments I dont mean abuse, or rude criticism) that people would in fact attempt to contact me, like you have in fact done.
3. I only post to this forum because in fact I do hope that there will be a few people out there who would want to contribute to science. That being said, if you have experience with psychological studies, who would know, that the only thing that is going to be done, is some question of who you are. This particular survey is going to go into basic demographics, MMORPG play, friendships/relationships, what you post on the internet, and some personality questions. This survey is completely ANONYMOUS, I have had friends take it, and I assure you I have no idea who they are on the results screen all I see is numbers and data. Again if it seems long, this is my first,. so again please bear with me.
4. If perchance you would like to know a little about myself before considering the survey please feel free to ask and I will either post it on here, or you can email me (this is my personal email, and I hope that some of you arent going to be jerks about this...) at meatwad_lvr@yahoo.com.

The fact that you have 'hope' we don't consider this a hoax, indicates to me this isn't on the level.
I think to anyone familiar with the way academia and/or psychology is going to find your approach less than genuine.

The survey is hosted through Qualtrics, which is a survey online program which allows for the collection of responses online and also allows for anonymity. It is also where the survey is being sponsored. If you look in the link, there is a mention of boise state which is the university in which I am representing as a student. The boisestate part of the link means that the survey is being held at he boise state part of the survey host. Qualtrics is an academic tool used by some to host the online website. I would rather not use qualtrics, but as a first time independent researcher I am sure my mentor felt it would be the least complex.
Not saying its a hoax, but several minutes ago i went there and the only reason i didnt click on accepet (or whatever the selection is) is that Im awefully skidish about being taken somewhere unknown.
And so your first foray into the psychology of MMO's is met with paranoia and self indulgent defenses. I wish it weren't so, but you will only find much worse, and often times more delusional, subjects for your research. I myself am very cynical and aimless, but I see the merit in your endeavor and will most likely contribute at some point.
To those of you taking issue with the guinea pig concept: It is exactly what you've always wanted. Someone is paying attention to you.
Your reply shows you didn't get what I intended. I would suggest you have one of your professors look at your original post and give you feedback on it. It might be more enlightening.

I thought it was a pretty straightforward questionnaire/survey. Made me ponder again my habit of being really silent while playing games, people occasionally get annoyed at me for that.

No, no no, I am just a college student trying to do some work and in some way contribute so I can go on to graduate school and get a job, buy a house. .... You know people type of things. I do have information about myself in my profile. Email me I do exist.
I prefer not use terms like "I know" or "I assume" because when it comes down to it, all I can do is hope that some people are compassionate enough to give me some responses.
Now, please before you continue to tear me to shreds, I would like to say in my defense I wish there was a way to make everyone understand what I am doing and I know that its naive of me to think so. That being explained, if there was anything within my grasp that I could do, to get you to answer my questions I would, but I dont think thats what some people want.
However, if there is anything I can do, (such as answer some more questions about the study, the research , ...why I chose this particular study, perhaps answer some questions about myself.. without getting into details of my bank acct, routing number and stuff like that, ) SURE ! Drop me an email or post it here, I cant promise I'll respond on the hour by I do promise to respond within 24 hours.

Keep in mind that the people here, myself included, will be swollen with the concept of their alter ego. Sometimes that manifests itself in a genuine belief that everyone is out to get them or is interested in how brilliant they are with their ability to see fault in something innocent. Try not to take it personally, because it really doesn't matter.
Also, your survey was very interesting and I was happy to have contributed.

You rip her about her callous approach but yours was no less abrasive. You can be constructive without being condescending.
As far as we know this may this persons first foray into forums. It can be intimidating especially dealing with ones as full of vitriol as gaming forums can be.
That being said, if you want to conduct an official survey OP, I would approach the people here at MMORPG.com and ask them about doing it. People here will be less than enthusiastic about clicking on a blind link considering many unscrupulous people use that as a method to install malicious programs on others computers. That reason alone may not give you the kind of results you are looking for.

I understand the motivation here and the reason for your post. Unfortunately very few people will be honest and alot will be dishonest just to make any conclusion invalid.
You may get a nice set of results from people here, but they will be inacurate. Just because alot of people visit these forums, does not mean a wide variety of people come here, a common mistake in research.
