"done when it's done" as they say, and the result speak for themselves.
Atleast they are not milking their franchises' with cheap sequelsexpansions like C&C and EQ2 for example.
SC2 will be on shelves in the next few months (its currently in beta) June/July time and Cataclysm 4Q 2010... best thing's come to those who wait
2010 will be the best year for Blizzard for a long time with two products being released.

At the moment I am playing Darkfall, but I might come back for the expansion (while still playing Darkfall)
In an interview earlier this year one of the Blizzard devs answered back to a remark about them focusing too much on dungeons and the dungeon finder and removing people from the game world with a statement that pretty much said they were focusing on streamlining their instances and dungeons up to Cataclysm and that Cataclysm would shift their focus to bring people back into the world, world pvp, areas that truly matter etc..
My hopes are that if they manage to pull this off in the same manner they managed to revive all of the older instances with the dungeon finder we might have a winner, personally what WoW needs is more world interaction, more fishing contests more, world pvp, more meaningful stuff that will make players go out of the main city hubs and interact with eachother.
To answer the topic directly I am sure Cataclysm will bring back alot of people and really expect another best seller for this year, I just hope their changes come true and that they can bring Azeroth back to life rather than just being another 3 day leveling spree and then deserted.
Cataclysm probably won't increase WoW's subs, but more likely keep those playing that are thinking about quitting. Wrath came out and WoW's numbers didn't go up, so I don't see Cataclysm doing it either.

I think you sorely underestimate the appeal of furries. :P
Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.
I think that the main reason WOW wont get that many more NEW customers is the fact that in order to play Cataclysm, you must first buy and install the first 3 versions. I believe this is the main reason for the the slowdown of new members to WOW. I mean who would buy a new game when in order to play this game, you must first buy 3 more games and install them all to even be able to play.

This is completely false. You don't have to buy any of the expansions to play World of Warcraft.

Actually lich made the subs increase by about 1-2mil but cata probably won't. I am very happy to see that cata is bringing the world back into warcraft. Kinda tired of spending my time on just one continent.
I dont beleive so, I think the only people who will play are the ones who do already. No new player is going to buy the expansions and play up to 85, unless a friend reccomends the game. With all the expansions they have out, i'd say that the chance of new players who dont want to spend 100+ for a game is very slim.
This is completely false. You don't have to buy any of the expansions to play World of Warcraft.
I think you need to reread the post. Its is true, you need to BUY all the xpacs to play Cata when it comes out. For thats the model that WOW has had since the first xpac and the second one. Now, if you just want to play vanilla WOW, then you only need to buy WOW and not the xpacs.

I'll buy it and resub for a while just because it is something new. I don't have a current mmo home atm nor have I had one for four years or longer so I jump on all the new stuff for something to do until the next FF, EQ Next, or that sci fi shooter mmo they are developing atm (forget the name).
I'll buy it and roll a wolf or gobby just to do some gaming around other players (something not common until end game anymore) and after I get max level and gear it out I'm sure I'll be bored again and quit. WoW was never able to hold my attention for too long and I don't see Caty changing that.
If Blizzard really wanted to increase their subscriber base...they would do what SoE does with each EQ2 expansion and make Cataclysm all-inclusive, as in it would INCLUDE all the past expansions and the original game.
But they probably won't do that, because I think they're cocky enough to think they'll still be able to rake in more money by requiring people to individually purchase those other things as well, and they're betting some new players will come along still and actually do that. I guess time will tell.
I know that the more I hear about Cataclysm and the closer it gets...the less I want to play it. I wonder if that will change for me over the course of this year? I kind of doubt it....but I guess we'll see. I just don't think I'm going to buy in this time around. I've seen enough of the downward spiral from the past two expansions. For me....it seems to be making a continuous beeline to the bottom of the barrel, so....meh. No biggie. Blizzard will still make a fortune and life will go on.
I can already think of about 10 people I know personally that don't play but are coming back when the expansion is released. So yeah I think more people will be playing but give it 2-3 months after the majority are level capped again and I think the game will even out like it is now.
I don't plan to come back for Cata. Of course, I say that now, but come November, curiosity may get the best of me.
I do expect there will be a temporary surge in subs around that time. Like most have said, people will return to see all the changes. But everything happens so quickly in World of Warcraft now that it won't last long.
I don't expect it to bring in many new players, though.

Its not that their Cocky, its that SOE is shite for the most part and thats really the only way they are getting new players into the game. If SOE games were a massive success maybe the argument would hold some water, but you cant compare a company that is struggling to make profit business plan with a company that is well estabilished and continues to make massive profit.
WoW costs like 4 pounds the only cheaper game I have bought other than that was EVE for 2 pounds on a steam special, te battlechest with the expansion costs 10.00 to 13.00 pounds and you can get cheaper in some places, come cataclysm the battlechest will include WoTLK as well I think its cheap enough for new people.

I dont think there will be that great of a population change in either direction when Cat launches. Those who have stopped playing may come back (as with any MMO expansion) but might not stay all that long. New players will join the game and stay a while longer, but those people will just fill in the gaps of the players who quit.
But yeah, at the release numbers will jump for a bit but then settle to around the same population the game currently has, which isnt a bad thing seeing as the game has a population larger than some countries.
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
I think your talking about Farmville and its 80 million players. wow only has 8 million players now, and its losing more each day, I dont think its the end of wow but this new expansion will not have the impact people hope or want, it will only further the retrograde slide that wow is on and has been on since their move away from hardcore to casual game play.
And anyone who wants to argue with that statement can argue with the numbers, 11+ Million players when the game had 40 man raids and things were harder, rewards felt like just that a reward, after TBC and their numbers fell almost instantly and have continued to fall , this is not doom saying, its simple fact.
TBH I think wow will continue to thrive for at least another 2 years before it finally hits that critical mass event where the big name guilds move away and it starts dwindling down to just the die hard or super casual followers.
Pllayed for 5 years and quit about 8 months ago now, I will never play WoW again no matter what they do to it. I don't want to play a recycled world with different textures plopped down on top of it. I want innovation. With many of the new MMO's coming out I will find that innovation as many of them will be using many old MMO features but with an upgraded twist. I look forward to SWTOR and TSW. Those are the only two upcoming mmo's that look worth a damn. At the end of the day let me say I will never play WoW again, and I was hardcore at it.

It is more a matter of supply vs demand than anything else. Blizzard has owned 3 of the top ten best selling software spots for years and years now without fail. There is no reason for blizzard to make an all inclusive game package until that changes.
It would be simpler if they did a buy one get everything package and I think they should, but as far as the market goes there is no reason for them to do that.
Soe makes expansion packages for a few reasons. The first being they shit out so many expansions that it raises the barrier to entry for a new player. Most stores are not going to carry 10 expansions for their game and most don't even carry the very latest. Even then there just isn't very much demand for them, so they have to be priced/packaged accordingly. Not that making all inclusive game packages has increased eq2s playerbase any though, so moot point.

I don't see how THAT has anything to DO with SoE. It's a marketing tactic. I was just using SoE as an EXAMPLE of a company that uses it. For Blizzard....I think it would be very effective in drawing "fresh meat" to the slaughtering block.
