Xbox 2 - Microsoft Reveal Plans.

Microsoft to release three versions of Xbox 2

One of them will be like a PC, shock

By Wil Harris: Thursday 11 November 2004, 10:23
A SLIDE from a non disclosure agreement (NDA) presentation seen by the INQ points towards Microsoft launching three versions of the Xbox 2, one of which is a fully functioning PC.

The presentation, understood to have been given to analysts and market researchers in the UK earlier this year, plots a timeline for the introduction of the systems. Xbox Next and Xbox Next HD are planned for Autumn 2005, whereas the Xbox Next PC is pencilled in for Autumn 2006.

The standard Xbox Next will not include a hard drive, which will allow Microsoft to cut costs on this basic unit. Xbox Next HD, as you might imagine, does include a hard drive and will offer increased functionality based on this. Xbox Next PC is, according to the presentation, an entry-level PC that runs Windows and all standard PC software. It also includes CD Burner, Wireless keyboard, mouse and controller and will work best connected to a high-definition TV or PC monitor. Media Center functionality - like movies, music and photos - is also included. The device will also play most available PC games.

System outline specifications note that internet browsing and instant messaging would be key applications, and that the entire unit will be smaller than the current Xbox, although it will not be possible to upgrade the shipping memory or processor.

The year-long gap between the mooted introductions of the two standard Xboxes before the Xbox Next PC is an interesting decision, which suggests that Microsoft realises the time that the market needs to acclimatise to TV media functionality. Since the Vole expects to ship Xbox Next before the Sony PlayStation 3, two versions of the console allow it to get the first wave out before PS3, but to also spoil the launch of Sony's flagship by concurrently announcing the PC version.

That PC version sounds.. just.. dumb.

And if it is a fully functional PC... can you say hacks for every game(most importantly online-games)?

If the PC thing will run about say, $300 or so. I think it'll be popular for the whole fact of it being a functioning PC that'll be very affordable and cheap.

It was going to happen sooner or later, it was only time. Personally I'm glad if it'll be cheap, and a good gaming system and cost you about the same as a new video card.

Thats kinda cool but also weird becuase it might be giving hackers, cd game copiers, and other lawbreakers a new tool to play with and corrupt.

So what is the diffrence going to be? essentially its just left Xbox and they said that they will now be making mini computers? So since it will run windows it will have to abide by the same bounds of a normal computer making all their games 100% computer compatible. So what will the big diffrence be?

You can bet it won't be only $300. If Xbox came out at $300, then you have to figure the "normal" Xbox 2 will come out at, at least, $300 or more. I'd expect to see no less than $600 on the Xbox 2 PC.

Maybe we will be able to play Xbox2 Games on our already existing PCs. That would eliminate the need to waste an additional cost on the xbox2 unit and just purchase some accessories and software to support their games.

That's still about $1400 less then a regular PC.

Enough with Halo, its becoming worse than EQ2 vs WoW... commercials, newspaper, entire tv shows dedicate to it.. ITS NOT THAT GREAT

This won't happen. The games are written for the specific hardware in the Xbox 2. You would have to buy the same sound card and video card that an XBox 2 already has in it. For that cost, you would probably be better off just buying an XBox 2.

    Dumbest Idea yet.

Why not simply Make Xbox2 Games compatible with Regular Computers why make people buy a new PC just to play Xbox :o

There is nothing stopping a company from making their XBox games for PC's (unless they sign some exclusive deal with MS). But the same identical code cannot be used on both.

XBox code is written for the specific hardware in the XBox, not a generic in-between DirectX driver. That is why XBox games run so well on lowend hardware. Plus XBox games are written for the resolution of TV's, not monitors. So, text is larger, and the graphics are made so that the natural blend effects of TV's are used.

But, obviously from an business standpoint, MS is going to want XBox exclusive games so people buy it. Nothing wrong with that. Why isn't anyone complaining that all PS2 games should come out on PCs?

It is soon to be called the XBox 2 PC. Then it will be able to play XBox games and PC games. The PC in front of me does not do that... :)

few lines of code and you have yourself an emulator. Type in xbox emulator on google, and in half a second (9kb file) you have an xbox.
