I've watched D9 two times. Not because I liked it that much, but because I had it rented and the first time I watched it, I just didn't feel it was all that great. I hadn't read anything on it, knew nothing about the plot, and the first time around I saw it for what it was: another statement about how Hollywood despises all but their own perverse utopian societal dreamland. Picking Johannesburg, the obvious Boer names of the main antagonists, the alien names being predominantly those which would be "assigned" to SA blacks during apartheid, the evil corporation, etc. The movie was not a profound statement on society, it was another example of a writer and director deciding to use their grand stage as a means to teach a lesson. So it pissed me off and I found myself rooting for the antagonist evil Colonel and was disappointed when he didn't shoot van der whoosit in the end.
The second time I watched it, I decided to forfeit my previous conclusions and watch the movie as entertainment only. Then I found the movie okay. Overall, a watchable movie, but not at all one I would recommend to my sphere of friends.
In my opinion it was the worse movie i had ever seen in years and was truly amazed when it go nominated for the oscars but again that's just my opinion.
I agree. I didnt like it because I felt it was lame.
I didnt understand how this movie grew to the oscars.
Cause if this could do it, I dont see why movies like Meet the Spartans couldnt do it.

I think that after this post you need to tell us in detail what makes for a good Sci-Fi movie
OR
You can tell us what would you change [ if you had lots of cash and permission ] in the film District 9?
Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981

What was so "lame" about it?
Is it "lame" like your sig?
I question the integrity of our society when our 20 year olds can't formulate proper sentences and have no concept of proper grammar.
For fuck's sakes, dude, you're from Washington DC and you're 20 years old, at the very least you should at least have a concept of proper grammar. Something that every 6th grader has. I'm originally from Ukraine and I fear that I have a better grasp of your language than you do. Let me paraphrase that: I speak your language better than you do.
PS: wtf is that pixelated thing on the right side of your sig?

Whats the hype about it. I dont get it. Just got into a argument with my friends on the subject, but cant get anything out of them without them turning it into a WoWCrack discussion
So whats up with this movie? I didnt like it, but can somebody explain the hype to me please
It was great!
You just didn't understand the message of the movie.
And the sequel will be even greater.
All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.
While I agree that it did suffer from the same "Corporations bad, little guy good!" preachiness of Avatar and other movies, I really enjoyed it because of its simplicity. They had a limited budget and were forced to tell a good story to make up for the lack of flashiness. In my opinion, the effects that were there were perfect. Nothing screamed "HEY, LOOK AT ME! I'M A MICHAEL BAY VISUAL EFFECT THAT GOES BOOM IN YO FACE BITCH WOOT WOOT!!!".
The characterizations were good, especially with the aliens. Making you connect emotionally with something so hideous is definitely a mark of success for what the creators were trying to accomplish. Sharlto Copely is a better actor than what people are giving him credit for, and he shows a decent amount of range in portraying his character's transformation over the course of the movie. Kind of a shame he's lowering himself to playing Murdock in the upcoming A-Team movie, but who knows?
