PSU DIED

DEATHRAMENTDEATHRAMENT Member UncommonPosts: 701

So my 500w fm2 enermax psu died yesterday, heard a popping sound and then smoke... smelled the psu and it stinks of burning electronics. So i know its dead, hope it didnt damage anything else. Any way im going to get a new one. Just have to order it. Had this psu for about 2 years really surprised it went.

My system specs are as follows:

cpu- e8400 c2d 3.0 ghz

video card- 260 gtx

1 sata 7200 HD

4 gig ram (2 sticks)

1 ide dvd/cd burner

asus pq5l board

Nothing over clocked. I'm getting one of these psu's for sure because the price is right for me, they are:

http://www.ultrax3.com/product_details.php?cPath=103&pPath=653&productID=655    or

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371007      Even though the top one has more wats it not the best name i dont think so im leaning towards the earthwats. So which of these 2 would u suggest. TY

I would go with this one. 5 year standard warranty, after that you might want a bigger one anyway.

I am a big fan using Ultra PSU's - I currently run the 1000W ultrax3 Modular. So looking at your specs that 38A on the +12V Rail would be perfect (leaves some room for upgrading also).

Nothing wrong with the Antec either, the specifications are good for your system also. Not really much of advice but you'd be fine with either of them.

Bare in mind that im not ordering from newegg, so those two that i mentioned are the only 2 in my price range available from robotnik.com

I am not a huge fan of power supply's ,i would just find any decent 650-800 watt supply for a good price.I would look more to the best cooling system i could afford and i would o/c it.

I still have some VERY old PC's kicking around,I am pretty sure one is at least 15 years old and i have never seen any problem from power supply's i always leave my PC's running close to 24/7,i might turn them off once a week.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

Well u need to have an adequate power supply, especially if u play games like AOC at max setting.

  • viddsterviddster Member UncommonPosts: 220

The Ultra has a better warranty and higher total power output. The Antec has better efficiency (cheaper to run) and has core i5/i7 support. Depends what you want to go for really.

I just want a psu that will run my system with no problems. I guess both of those would be fine.

    Doesn't the GTX 260 need atleast a 550W PSU?

This might be the reason why it went pooof.

Or it was just a cheaply made unit.

I would go with a 750-800W PSU just to be future proof.

+12v is more important than watt number on psu label and enermax psus are not cheap ,expensive actually .

I would pick ultra between both

I know...    mine is rated at 720W at +12V.

It says that the antec one has 2 12v rails both at 22a and the ultra says it has 1 12 v  at  38a i think, i though the more amps on the 12v the better, thats why i was leaning on the antec.

  • Mellow44Mellow44 Member Posts: 599

Yeah, you should only go with PSUs that has a single rail.

O i did not realize that well i guess then ill go ahead and order the ultra then if thats the better one.

I would go with a 750W from Antec.

I have a OCZ Mod-Xstream Pro 600W, it powers a Core I7-920, on a x58 board, with two GTX 280's in SLI. As well as three hard disks, and four 120mm fans. I have this machine plugged into a UPS that activley reads power consumption. At full load, CPU & both GPU's 100% the machine consumes 490 Watts of power. Maybe that is a little close, however it has been stable for me for the last year and a bit. I think most people drastically overthink what kind of power their machines are actually using. Im not saying these huge 1000w powersupplies are bad. Most of them are fantastic. Just overkill sometimes. Although i would get one with a high efficiency. One of those 80 or 90+ ratings.

  • DEATHRAMENTDEATHRAMENT Member UncommonPosts: 701

ahh ok thks for the hlp, im still not sure which one is the better choice for me, but im gonna assume either one would work fine.

This is the point many people don't seem to understand. You don't need a nuclear plant to run a normal computer.

From that 490 watt you still need to decrease the psus efficiency loss, meaning the real load is about 0,8x490=392 watts

As Tain mentioned, this is with 100 % load on both cpu and gpu's, meaning it's a synthetic load. On normal situation , meaning gaming and such, loads will be only a portion from this peak consumption.

Yep it's almost impossible to set up a system that actually needs a 1000W PSU. A dual GPU system can rarely draw more than 400W off the PSU and only in synthetic benches. What really matters is the quality and stability of the power the PSU provides, that's why a 380W Seasonic PSU is way more than most 500W PSU's.

    same here i use 430 watt power supply i power a amd phenom 2 550,ati 5770 ,7200 rpm hardrive ,asus m478t-e mobo

kingston 1600 serie ram and i dont believe i have ever ran into power issue.

the main thing i d say op whatever brand you buy make sure it has lot of diff type of mobo connector or ever better connect type wire that goes to psu it makes for a cleaner wiring and lot more procise

mine i baught had the wire converter to fan wire etc

beur its a mess it does the job but it look awfull!and more prone to issue like missing wire type most often the mobo fan connector control and these are v ery important they control the speed of fan but can also warn you when fan goes dead on you so you can stop computer before any damage happen further down!
