I could be like everyone else on the site, and say look at the Free Games thread, instead ill just tell ya a couple popular ones. RuneScape, Planeshift (It's coming along slowly), Tibia, Rubies of Eventide (NOT a bad game). But you get what you pay for, so investing a little into a game monthly will be quite helpful. If you want to stick with a free and decent and good MMORPG, wait till Guild Wars comes out. Should be a couple more months, its on my wishlist.
Mmmm Guild Wars. I would definately have to go with that recommendation next year. I played Runescape for a while as well, it just got old fast to me. Rubies IS another good one to go with.
"What is it I have against Microsoft, you ask? Well, you know how you feel when you wait for an MMO to come out and when it does you feel like you've paid to play it's beta test for another 6-9 months before anything even thinks of working the way it should? Being a network engineer you feel that way about anything Microsoft puts out."

No game is really free. Not even real life is free, character development costs quite a bit for potions.
