My friends and I have played this game and have also completely given up hope and completely removed it from our computers. I am just writing this message as a warning to other mmorpg lovers...stay away from this game!
I will not go into all of the details that can easily be found (i.e. cash shop!, gear differential, forced pvp, etc)... This is just a warning to the players in a very simplistic form. You can play the game for free, and actually enjoy it up to a certain level. I call this the "bait-in" method. There will absolutely come a certain point where you will absolutely NEED to pay money to compete, AND the best part is that once the Russian patches hit the U.S. servers it will cost a WHOLE LOT in order to compete. They are possibly making it so the amount of money you spend, the more powerful you get with an almost unlimited cap! If you don't believe me, do some research! Even in its current state, it would cost a moderate gamer a chunk of change to play. Once the patches come in, you better be related to Bill Gates b/c it is absolutely crazy. I'm actually surprised there isn't more fuss on these boards regarding this! The Allods boards were blowing up recently, but gptotatoe started locking/wiping these posts discussing concerns over this!
Anyway, what could've been a good thing in our gaming world has crashed. Do your research before you get roped in. Hell, even xfire playtime has dropped more than half since the game's "soft release" has dropped, and that wasn't very long ago...
FYI, I'm done monitoring allod's board and this board on mmorpg b/c I have given up hope. Thought I would drop a note (which i NEVER have for any game) in order to push potential new players into researching the game before experimenting b/c I really do feel the company does not deserve recogniztion in the gaming world.

I did the same as did my girlfriend. We just aren't going to fork over tons of real money to play a game. I could pay 15 a month for a lot better game if I wanted to pay money. They are just milking people and once the new patches hit from russia the game will die. I had a lot of high hopes for the game, but moved on to other games. I chalk it up as a learning experience. I will never play another Gpotato game.
If this is the way it is, this is a perfect example of what gives f2p a horrible impression. f2p is an oxymoron by any standard, but there is a better business model that can deal with progressive content accessibility as DDO has. I've read similar things about Runes of Magic, after you get to a point.

Currently, you can reach lvl 40 without paying a dime (well, bigger bag and bank is almost a must, but they are 1-time buys).
Then you will certainly need perfumes for Heroics and Astral, but your version's drops are still quite good, so you can just buy perfumes with gold.
As NA and EU GPs are somewhat hesitant to "upgrade" the game with our latest patches, no-one knows for sure, what will happen in the end. My bet is that they will wait for the next big patch.
And no-one knows for sure what exactly will be in the next big patch, that (as far as we know) will be around the end of this month. Some bits of it are known, yet the main question is wide open - will it make the game even more expensive, or less?
All in all, at present AO is still quite enjoyable (aka "without real money patches"), for you.
I was enjoying my couple of days in Allods, but the equivalent of 2 months AAA subscription money to buy a 30 slot bag is ridiculous to be honest. Never got as far as needing perfume but it's only going to get more expensive in reality (thought the guy above is right about some of this stuff being one off purchases, that's just one character. Multiply that cost by the number of Alts you are likely to create and the cost is astounding) . Shame really... game had a good atmosphere (once you got away from the Gold Spammers) and interesting classes. Was loving my Savant.
See you later gPotato... if you ever consider a subscription model (and actually having the fundamental things like bags appearing in game, not in a cash shop) I might be back.
