A friend of mine is in the exact same position, he really wants to try out EQ2, but is afraid it'll be yet another let-down after being disappointed with WoW, and CoH. I'm really hoping that SOE will make some "invite a friend" or "free week" thing.
They will likely do a Free-trial like they did with SWG, after they get the NORMAL population settled. Like they had to open up an extra 10 servers then expected for the large population, and a free-trial would likely cause that population to increase anymore.
And there are few games (if any) that don't do free trials at some point.
And your signature is ignorant because you are 'loving' games that are not even out yet.
A free trial after initial release is not as effective, especially since WoW and EQ2 are being released at the same relative time.
People need to decide which game to invest their time in and many players want to start a game when released so as not to fall behind the majority of the game population.
In my view, it was a major marketing blunder on SOE's part not to offer a free trial, unless of course EQ2 sucks which is quite possible given SOE's track record.
WoW had over 500,000 requests for open beta spots. That's more than EQdead's current customer base.

i dont understand why all the people that dont like EQ2 so much and they dont care about it keep coming here to post... it must not be that bad if you wont stay away from it... either that or there is something seriously wrong in your head. i dont really like WoW or any of the other new ones, but you wont see a single post from me in a game i have no interest in. maybe someone could shed some light about why they keep coming back?

Well most EQII haters are WoW fanboys who judge a game by how it will compete against their game. If it could kill their game because it is so good, they have got to HATE IT! Most EQII haters have not even been it beta. Anyways, back to subject; you should judge Everquest II by the large amount of props it is getting. Try it out.

Bah... EQ2 is one of those games where you can just read a good review and/or compare it to reviews and threads of WoW and decide if you wanna play or not.
It's a big title, lots of people like it. I say go for it. Or wait for November 23rd for WoW and wait for a real comparison in between EQ2 and WoW.
We're not talking about Ryzom that took months before a Free Trial. And what's stupid is that Ryzom only came with a free trial THE DAY EQ2 was launched. very stupid on their part, and if you read the reviews, there wasn't many players on Ryzom, so there's probably even less now cause EQ2 is out.
But still... if only companies could think more of the advantages of free trials, then they would surely get more players to play their game.
And especially with only a few weeks appart the release of EQ2 and WoW... SOE should of been smarter, they should of released a free trial for everyone that way more people would chose EQ2 instaed of WoW.
But no... if they don't release a free trial before WoW, they will lose customers to Blizzard.
it's their loss...
But let this be a lesson to you though.
SUBSCRIBE TO ALL BETA TESTINGS TO ANY GAME YOU WANT TO PLAY!!!!
I subscribbed to the beta for EQ2 months ago, and I was never accepted until 1 week before release. That was *my* way of "trying the game before I buy" and I can tell you right now, if SOE did not let me into the beta 1 week before the release, I would of never bought the game!
See what "Free trials" does to people? It allows people to try'em out first.
But Blizzard is smart, they tend to always take whatever is wrong in the gaming world and do the total opposite and make it right. Maybe if the people speak up, Blizzard MIGHT make a free trial before the game is released and truly dominate the MMORPG market.
I mean think about it. WoW is hyped mainly cause it has the logo "Blizzard" on it. Not many people I know are dying to own this game cause of the name or the gameplay. Actually, they think the gameplay is gonna own just cause it's by Blizzard. See the impact that has on people? Give a free trial before the game is released and you get even more sales. Why don't MMORPG companies see this?

Actually, EQII is probably one of the few games that I would need a free trial to decide to buy or not. I really like Sony enough to actually buy and try the game. I really dislike fantasy MMOs anymore but with the Sony Access pass that gives me all their games for $22 a month I am thinking of getting EQII when I get a new computer. Just glad that SWG that the junk company LucasArts owns is not part of the deal. I don't try many games and don't need beta to decide if I will get the game. The only time I will not try new ones is if my money is already going toward subscriptions. Free trials help me decide if I want to change games though.
Maybe there will be a free trial for EQII by the time I get a new computer around X-Mas but don't expect it. I know I enjoyed playing WoW and loved the graphics. The only thing that I did not like was that it was hard to try certain things. Ppl had already decided if certain quests were worth doing or not. Since I hate not feeling like any accomplishment in games with games being just time sinks, doing storylines is how I decide if a game is worth playing or not. I love reading all the stuff that comes with doing quests. The quest is not what I enjoy but the story of the quest. With ppl deciding if a quests reward is worth the trouble or not of doing the quest and I can't find ppl to help me then why play the game. I don't get anything out of being max level or having the best loot since with the games just being time sinks all I have to do is sink enough time to get that. I normally get bored before I get to max level and change to another character and try to follow another path.
You get 30 days free with purchase of the game, a free download trial would be...well even with a broadband connection, You'd be downloading that 10 Gigs forever so it'll never happen. The only games that do that, have very little content and they're usually 2D graphics, OR they're desperate for costumers like Anarchy Online.
The game is actually alot of fun and alot of work, you put a ton of work to get your character anywhere. You can either quest yourself into levels or do like alot of people who have a hard time doing quests, XP grind out in Antonica/commonlands once your lvl 10. You didn't get a free download trial with SWG and you sure the hell dont with Everquest 1 so you know just out of common sense you wont with Eq2 one of their biggest games ever. I say that because SWG was really a lucas arts game, they just wanted someone else to take the fall for its misery.
for those interest in games with quests. Im lvl 18 and ive done 160+ quests. I know there's even more than that but I've yet to find them or Im waiting to take them. You can even Buy some quests from merchants that sell books! Some quests have lil story to them and they are to help you get to know the area. Mini tours of Death I call a few of them, but they were fun jus tmake sure your power bar is full when you sprint out of hell's way!
Some quests involve story, such as rooting out an underground liquer merchants, or getting access to the Shattered Vale. the world is rich with stories, all lil parts leading up to something more. Hell you can find quests off book shelves that you have to read very carefully or you can't finish the quest without help.
