I think sandbox-type games have higher long term potential. Bioware's TOR is not a sandbox, but it might have that potential, if the stories are compelling and they deliver good continuation to them in expansions. I bring TOR in here because Bioware is trying something relatively new to the genre.
If you stand VERY still, and close your eyes, after a minute you can actually FEEL the universe revolving around PvP.

TORs potential depends on how fast they release DLC adventure packs for its "Single player" class specific story lines.
A themepark can't touch the potential of the sandbox due to the way their designed. Doesn't mean a Tp can't be a fun ride for a while though.
I think sandbox will be the future of MMOs. I don't think we've seen any particularly great sandbox games yet but maybe someday we'll get an MMO world that is completely dynamic.. with dynamic resources (like forests and mines) that can be harvested, dynamic weather/climate systems, the ability to build anything, natural disasters, so on...
sandbox would be nice but as eve showed they are very ressoruce hog!so a version of sandbox instance will probably hasve to come along, when i say sandbox instance i mean
and instance with lot and lot of player below 1000 per map isnt an instanced sandbox!

Why so black and white?
My preference is for hybrid; I like a large open world, but I also like instancing.
Also, if I may don my Captain Obvious hat and hop up on the podium-of-obvious-statements: MMORPG.com ain't representative of the market as a whole.
Playing: EVE, Final Fantasy 13, Uncharted 2, Need for Speed: Shift
