New Fantasy MMOs in the Pipeline?

teratyateratya Member UncommonPosts: 347

Alright Ive been a member of this site for quite some time and always have gotten some good advice (try LOTRO, which I reaally enjoyed) but I havent seen (or looked hard enough for) any new fantasy based MMOs in development or recently released that really interests me.

Let me give some background of what I have played and what I am looking for (liked about previous MMOs), and maybe based on that some of you might be able to enlighten me.

UO - Liked the skill system instead of levels, to allow you to be anything and not strictly one class.

EQ - Loved how large the world seemed, so expansive. I love to be able to explore and it always seemed like there were new places to go. Also loved that you could solo.

AC - Liked nothing about it....sorry.

Horizons (Istaria, now) - Loved the different classes, mixed melee and casters. Huge world, and the harvesting and crafting system are still yet to be matched today in some games. One of my favorite things of all time in any MMO resides in Horizons, being able to contibute to global builds like bridges, and being able to leave a price on your house for items you need to complete it and people can contribute to it and be paid, very cool (havent seen anything like it since in any MMO ive played)

CoH - Loved the game, but not much transfers from this to a fantasy theme for me. Maybe the multitude of quests (yes, tend to get repetative, but always gave something to do)

EQ2 - Never liked this from the beginning, world seemed too fractured, with all the instances. Seemed much smaller than the original EQ.

Vanguard - By far my favorite out of all MMOs. Still the best looking in my eyes, and there are still parts of the world I have yet to explore. Harvesting system is very refined too, always enjoyed popping on some music looking for rares and ultra rares. Being able to build your own home from scratch is nice too.

AoC - Only played for the free month after beta, and was sorely disappointed with the world that funneled you from place to place.

WoW - Dont like the cartoony look, but had fun with it as it was easy to log in and play for an hour and go if needed. Easily soloable, loved that about it.

LORTO - Kind of a comination of Vangard and WoW for me. Really enjoyed it and am considering returning but, would like to see if fhere is anything coming down the road that might incorporate all I like into something new.

Champions - See CoH above, without the multitude of quests though. Love the customization of abilities but, am disappointed otherwise.

If I look over the above experiences it appears I am looking for a game that has a traditional fantasy feel to it, no cartoony aspects (wings, etc), with a HUGE explorable world, excellent harvesting/crafting system, the ability to build player housing, and good solo capability.

If anyone knows of a game in the works or something I missed that has these attributes, that I should check out let me know, and thanks for taking the time to read through my history.

I haven't heard of anything "new" yet, aside from games like vindictus or war40k, but generally if a games hasn't been announced it means one of three things, either

    A. It's an indie game (don't waste your time, good ones are VERY rare)

    B. Development hasn't started or just recently started

    C. It, whatever you think "it" is, probably isn't being made

If there are new games in the works that are unannounced I'd rather them wait to near completion before hyping it up. I hate when I see an awesome game then I find out it won't come out for another 3 years. That's just me though.

Look into Craft of Gods too, game is listed on the site.  Xsyon might be worth looking into as well.

I'm still slightly wary about Xsyon. I don't think it's a scam, but as far as I know there's no gameplay video's and they're claiming to have all of wurm's and darkfall's features plus some. Though if it is what they promise then I'll definitely have to look into that one.

Xsyon is apocalyspe based not fantasy, also dawntide is "medieval" based not fantasy.

Aye, sounds a lot like traditional fantasy to me. Dawntide's one of those games on my "wait and see" list that I avoid looking into unless a public update/preview is released. I'm with the poster above that hates reading or hearing about a potentially cool game, only to have to wait a few years for release.

Final Fantasy XIV? Alpha testing is about to start, with the beta following soon after. Shouldn't take more than 6 months to release.

Not sure if any of these pique your interest but it's a list of the stuff that I know is in the works.

Starvault - "Mortal Online" sandbox style, first person perspective only, heavily combat oriented full loot ffa PvP game, release March

Notorius Games - "Xsyon 2012: Prelude" a Indie developed (mostly Russian talent) post apocalyptic game with a heavy bible/religious fantasy style, extremely over-ambitious feature list, sandbox style. April 15th '10 release

Bluehole Studios - "T.E.R.A. The exiled realm of Arborea" AAA fantasy, combat focused game with a fluid combat system that is much more twitch based, uses prior Lineage 3 engine, has a supposedly "international" development team, but still looks extremely Oriental - shiny plastic graphics & stupid-big weapons which have firework factories built into them.

SOE - DC Universe Online, action combat superhero game, you can't "be" Batman, Superman etc but you will get to fight alongside them.

Petroglyph Games - Mytheon, hybrid Trading card / RTS stratgegy-combat MMO.

Square-Enix - "Final Fantasy XIV" - still using the now ancient worldmap / transition to turn-based combat mechanic, though allegedly it has been further updated, touted as being much more of a casual friendly MMO than FFXI was.

Heatwave Interactive - Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising - resurrected from the dead (was in beta before it's parent company, Perpetual, collapsed) Roman & Classical Greek Mythology style fantasy MMO, makes me think "Clash of the Titans" meets "Gladiator"

Arena Net - Guild Wars 2, big budget AAA fantasy game that contines the story Guild Wars 1 started.

Vigil Games / THQ - "Warhammer 40k" Sci-Fi / Fantasy MMO, the big "reveal" coming at E3 2010.

Redbana/Hanbitsoft - "Mythos" diablo-alike combat fantasy mmo.(Previously developed by Flagship studios, of Hellgate: London fame).

Working as Intended - "Dawntide" Indie developeed freeform sandbox MMO.

Trion World Network - "Heroes of Telara" AAA fantasy game touting a dynamic changing world thanks to it's new server tech, role-swapping "on the fly".

Perfect World Entertainment - "Forsaken World"  fantasy, aiming to pull in the western market as much as the east, and be the new flagship MMO for the company.

Funcom - "The Secret World" AAA fantasy game set in the modern world, features 3 faction PvP but with faction-co-operative gameplay, loosely based on the mythology of horror writers such as H.P.Lovecraft & many others tying mythologies from around the world together into a "dark forces trying to bring about the apocalypse" scenario that the players are working to prevent.

38studios - "Project Copernicus" AAA fantasy MMO, huge amounts of big-name talent on this one, are releasing a single-player RPG set in the same universe as the MMO called "Project Mercury".

Red5 studios - supposedly AAA fantasy MMO, ex-WoW dev's heading the team, recently got funding from The9 (big Chinese game operator) but stated to be for a global release.

CCP/White Wolf - "World of Darkness" MMO based on the White Wolf created P&P games / universe.

SOE - EverQuest "Next" still in Pre-Production.

Hmm, no, it does not use that mechanic, and FFXI did neither. It's like any other MMO around there, except that there's no auto-attack.

    False info is bad info.

Well, I'm not in beta but I read some translated text that painted that picture, specifically mentioning world map to combat transition art and the efforts to maintain continuity between the two.

    /shrug if it was wrong.

Heroes of Telara is an upcoming fantasy MMO which looks promising to me.

I share many of the OP's thoughts. I recently returned to LOTRO myself and continue to play DDO with some friends. My one disagreement is that I thoroughly enjoyed Asherons Call for the first 5 years of its release. While i was never the biggest fan of AC's graphics, the gameplay and ever-expanding world kept me subbed.

I'm not sure where you read that info, or if it could mean something else, but the game is not different in this aspect to any other MMO. Combat mechanics on the other hand are somewhat different to most MMO's out there, and the text could have something to do with that.
