Mostly the 2nd part is but IDK if  I'm reading it wrong or not.

Q: Can you change classes in battle? If it's only possible when not in "battle mode," could one just sheathe their weapon and then change classes?

A: In FFXIV, there is a Passive Mode, wherein you recover HP as you move, and Active Mode, which is when your weapon is in-hand and you are poised to fight. Players can only switch classes while they are in Passive Mode.

Q: Can you switch between these two modes at will?

A: Yes, you can change modes anywhere you like.

From what I understand you can only change Jobs in passive mode, but you can change from Active mode to Passive modes anywhere you like. Does this mean you can change to passive mode in a middle of a fight change jobs then go back into Active mode?    If this is the case I'd say it would be really lame I really hope you can't switch back to passive mode until the battle is over.   Here is the rest of that article  ffxiv.zam.com/story.html

I don't think it would be "too lame" were that possible, but I don't think it will be. It would make no sense to be able to change between the two modes while fighting, when SE specifically said that you wouldn't be able to change roles while fighting. Either you're locked in to combat mode once engaged to an enemy or something similar.

I think you are reading too much into it.  They say you can change modes anywhere, not anytime.  Ive read that in FF11 you had to go back to town to change jobs and this is changed for FF14.  So thats why they say "anywhere".

I would imagine that if that's the case where you can change classes anytime you're in passive mode, once a battle starts, you would be locked in Active mode for the course of the battle.

    My plan for FF14:

Carry three to four job weapons on me for that current "tier" for the area. In other words, I'll carry a weapon for ninja, warrior, red mage, and black mage so I can level them all at the same time (e.g: level ninja until it's 10, then level warrior to 10, etc etc until all 4 are 10 so I can move on :D)!

    I cannot wait >:)!

I'm cool with changing jobs anywhere just as long as you can't do it mid battle.

they already stated a few times you cant do it anytime. They also say the while in passive mode (to gain HP) you can't have any hate or be in battle, so it wont happen the way you are thinking. i actually thought the same thing but you know they would stop that from being exploited.

It seems like you missed a section on the website where they explained the classes. Unless you're referring to the equivalent of each of those classes.

It might sound lame, but this is what i eluded to before. All it will involve is disengage ,switch class then engage again.

Now it is VERY clear that Square is actually Alpha testing an unfinished product here, they have stated over again that they are still deciding on many changes. So if they get too much feedback on the system it will be changed  no question about it.

Thing is this however,we have all seen how many little kiddies in games like EASY mode, heck if they could steal 5million gil off an exploit, they would do it.We even saw the FFXI vets trying to take advantage of a gear/drop exploit, and geesh surprise surprise they cried when Square laid down the ban hammer. So even if the system is super lame and makes combat too easy,Square might not get any complaints, then you can thank your fellow gamer once again :(.

I just hope the people testing the game have the common sense to give feedback that is best for the game and not themselves.

Forgot to mention that even with a proper setup,i can easily see people drop form party switch and get invited, especially with 8 players, you could easily have one player just sit there and invite players in and out.

From my understanding you can't switch equipment in combat = no job change in combat.

its not a big deal. you could opt to stop battling in the middle of a fight in ffxi as well. you only did it in extreme situations

Can people please read the thread (and maybe even the multitude of other friends on this exact subject), a few posters have already explained that SE has stated you cannot change equipment in battle, therefore cannot change classes in combat. Once in combat you are locked in combat mode (just like ANY typical MMO for that matter). So why are people still posting about how lame the system will be?

Eh, I could see it working like the Paradigm Shift in FFXIII.

The "cost" of switching from one job to another is an opportunity cost - you can't heal while doing damage, but you could switch and do one then the other then go back to the first...

But more difficult content would require you to play a more dedicated role with less switching, because if you switch out of healing your tank might die while you are dealing damage.

There have been a handful of fights in FFXIII so far that are quite challenging despite the robustness of the combat system.

I could see something similar working in a MMO setting, as each "class" or job would only have access to a specific number of abilities and actions they could perform, the solo player would be switching a lot and likely still be presented with a challenge due to the opportunity cost of switching and not being able to do X or Y.

Where as the group content would require more dedicated job roles...

However if they use a sub job system every solo player will pick up White Mage or whatever the equivalent is as a backup to keep themselves going, and even if you only have 1 job at a time if you can switch outside of combat everyone is STILL going to have their White Mage backup to heal themselves and remove status effects once out of combat.

Now it COULD and probably be is that you don't gain any XP or skill points or however they are going to do it for healing yourself out of combat, so even if everyone DOES switch to their "healing weapon" after a fight they'll never get any better at it unless they "level" their healing job through combat, be it solo or party based...

So yeah as long as you can't switch in combat it'll be fine.

Unless, of course, you go with a Paradigm Shift like system and create the difficulty in exploiting the opportunity cost or being able to switch roles mid-combat... but they (SE) never use the same system twice in the same way.

So yeah... just bored and talking here - nothing to see move along...
