I'm not so sure why everyone is so hung up on the graphics anyway. It's not like the graphics in the first two Diablo's were groundbreaking or anything. To me what defined Diablo was the action, loot, and character building.
In my opinion it isn't the graphics that have kept people playing D2 to this day.
Here's a few facts...
1) Blizzard will release D3 when they feel it's ready.
2) It will sell a gazillion copies.
3) A lot of the people griping about the graphics will shell out the cash for a copy anyway.
How awesome is that ? Just goes to show that you do not mess with success. GOW 3 is even darker and more grittier than the previous 2 and it sells 33 million in 1 day! Blizzard seriously needs hire these guys to make Diablo 3 I think. Infact, why dont they just sell the franchise to someone knows how to make a real Diablo game. Well, they had Blizzard North but they chased those guys outta there real fast.
The village and outside places can look shiny for all I care but dungeons in a Diablo game should be dark and evil. Did Blizzard rent in artist from "my little pony" or what?
If Blizzard want to make a happy game in many colors for young people than that is fine but don't drag down the Diablo IP with it, make some kind of warcraft game instead then. I already thought D2 could have been better.
I wont buy the game unless they actually makes the dungeon feel dark and evil again.

I thought the gameplay was painfully, brainlessly arcadey in both games. I stayed for the atmosphere, which was largely a product of the art style; as well as the mythology, which capitalized on what you didn't know about it, I think—itself augmented by the art.
I'd rather have dramatically different gameplay in the same setting (albeit evolved/expanded) than the same old gameplay (made even more arcadey) in what looks like a WoWterpretation of the setting. I don't know whether I'm in an infinitesimal minority on that, but there it is.
Favorites: EQ, EVE | Playing: None. Mostly VR and strategy | Anticipating: CU, Pantheon
Until I play Diablo 3 and see this new art in action, I can't really comment. Diablo 2 is so old now in comparison to today's graphics, I don't see how this could be a negative aspect. So it looks brighter and more colorful. Good. It's the gameplay and story that make the game anyway. Plus the music can really help darken the feel of the game if that is what everyone is griping about.

Strangely, the concept art is chock-full of that gothic-medieval atmosphere the game seems to lack.

C9 definitely looks awesome and I am looking forward to it. Hopefully it won't be another couple years before it makes it to the US.
Mabinogi Heries is coming to the US as Vindictus,. It looks pretty good too, but I think C9 looks better.
In either case, I don't think D3 has anything to worry about in regards to these games.

I'm still gonna buy it and play.
