I wanted to do a poll, but I couldn't think of an appropriate way of wording it. Basically, I'm wondering if a persons preference for heavily gear oriented MMOs (such as WoW) vs games where gear plays a more minor to almost no role (TCoS, UO, etc) is based in what archetype they prefer playing.
Look at it this way.
For a person who plays fighters, their gear is just as important as their character. Their combat ability is tied almost directly to their gear (most of the time, they don't need to be developed this way) and generally they have very flashy and well designed gear that causes obvious customizations to their characters appearance in addition to the power increase.
For a person who plays a caster, their ability is far less dependent on gear and more dependent on how they use their abilities and utilities. Gear helps, but it is not as dramatically drastic as it is for fighters for the most part (some games may cause more or less of a change depending on how incredibly gear focused it is). Additionally, their armor tends to be considerably less obvious and historically not designed terribly well. Additionally, they generally lack particularly ornate weapons. Overall, equipment delivers customization and power for casters, but to a considerably smaller degree than to that of fighters.
I'm simply wondering if the above relates to fighters being more than happy gathering ever more powerful gear and strutting around looking awesome to enjoy the game, while casters require more abilities and game depth to stay interested as there is little reward for them in simply getting another potato sack with another +30mp.

I do find myself paying more attention to the visual aspect of my characters gear when I'm playing melee classes. I think is more a matter of perspective than anything else; when I'm playing melee I'm watching my guy stabbing face .. but when I'm playing caster I tend to be watching the spell effects more than anything else.
I wouldn't say that it colours my game preferences though. I've played fighters in non gear-dependant games, and I play a Warlock in WoW at the moment.
