Hey all,
Well its that time again, I gave a new game a fair amount of time (Aion) and due to the casual way I like to play MMOs it wasn't the game for me. I'm going back to the drawing board and was hoping someone could give me some advice about the status of the game. Currently I have an around lvl 50 PoM on Crom (EU) and was thinking of either re-rolling on a different server, carry on playing my PoM or start a new lvl 50 character.
Based on people who are still playing's opinion, what do you think my best option would be? For reference I originally left AoC because of the graphics lag I was experiencing on a fairly high end, which was very disapointing. I dont want to be left with an unneeded class (I originally choose a PoM because I felt that would be one of the most needed classes in the game).
Thanks for any advice you can offer,
Dark

Well, hi there.
I just returned to AoC recently after going back two or three times previously, since launch. I have to say, that after the server merges, the state of the game appears to be in relatively good shape. I play on Cimmeria, and my guild alone has 35+ people on at prime time and I always see tons of people running around.
I think with the expansion on the horizon, it has brought back a substantial number of people to the game.
When I first started playing AoC I had a decent computer, different graphics card then I do now, but the rest was the same, and I was getting terrible framerates. I think at the time, there was a memory leak and a few other problems if I recall correctly. Since returning, with only the new graphics card in, I get 30-60FPS gamewide. It's a pretty decent number, and I don't notice a lot of problems (although I have to turn my fan speed up with RivaTuner because it runs really hot for some reason).
What I would recommend is to go download the unlimited trial and give that a shot. You can test out the graphics and all of that to be sure that it runs smoothly for you. (Maybe even turn on vertical sync & triple buffering, via your graphics card control panel -- personally if I don't have those on, I get massive screen tearing).
As far as classes go, you can pretty much get into any group and any raid with any class. Sure the classes can fill up, but every class is viable in its own way. If you weren't so keen on the PoM, try something new. It's a game, you're supposed to have fun and you should play the class that you like.
Chances are, your PoM is on a different server than what you thought anyhow, because there were some server merges recently, so a lot of the servers have been merged with the more popular ones.
Anyhoo, if you have any other questions, I'll try to answer them best I can.
Hi Dark
There is also a 7 day free re-evaluation key any current player can send you, so you can play with your current account. Or like the poster above me said, you can try the trial.
But since you have an account I think its better the first option, so you can play with your old characters as well.
Regards
I just re-tried the game.. I originally played the day it came out and then for 60 days afterwards. I left the game because it felt clunky, unresponsive and I just did not find it very much fun.
Unfortunately after a few days of retrying it a year and a half later it still feels exactly the same.. I was rather dissapointed. I also did not know about a 7 day re-evaluation and subscribed for a month.. wish I had not.
I mean to each his own opinion. :P Personally I feel I've never played a game I loved more. I hardly ever realize I am leveling on the characters I am leveling on, I actually do the quests for...the quest, which is a first for me in an MMO. I actually think this game is genuinely fun. Once again, it's just my personal opinion. Try it, see if it's for you, then make the decision whether you want to play it or not.
I just asked on the official forums about this 7 day re-revaluation key, and they do not exist.
The only way is to trial the game or buy it outright.
My friend wanted me to send him this 7 day re-evaluation, but after searching my account page a ton, I finally went and asked and it just doesn't exist. There have been re-evaluation periods, where Funcom invites previous players back to the game for a 7 day re-evaluation, but thats entirely different.
Thanks for all the great replies guys
I installed and downloaded all the patches last night so I'm rdy to give it a go again this evening. Regarding the 7 day reactivation trial, I'm not that worried about it if I'm honest, usually takes me more than a week to make my mind up anyway
I'm still undecided whether to carry on with my PoM or start another level 50 character as I would probably enjoy playing another class more (not a fan of just standing around at the back pressing buttons), only reason I chose a PoM in the first place was because I thought there would be a lack of healers and therefore they would be a class in high demand, but based on what I've read every class appears to contribute the same now and that every class is in equal demand, is this correct?
I downloaded the trial and so far I am really liking the game. Tried a Sin and Ranger, but I really love my Conqueror. My only real complaints are the interface is horrible, but I downloaded a UI mod and it's much better and the loading everytime I goto the Thirsty Dog Inn gets to be a bit tedious.
Sorry, I'm going to double post.
Anyhow, Dark, I'd say if you're tired of playing a PoM do NOT play a PoM. The thing about paying $15 a month (or less if you go the Best Buy route) is to have fun with the game you're playing.
I think its time for you to move on from PoM and trying something that can tear a head off.
JerYnkFan,
Unfortunately Tortage, while it has all those nice shiny little voice overs and such, really puts the game in a crappy light to those who are trialing it. It makes it seem like the entire game is instanced to oblivion and people are confused when they get into the real game.
First, you said you were trialing, not sure if you've played the past, but I'll let you in on some things:
1) The game is instanced, not like Guild Wars, but I mean, to get into a tavern, it'll most likely involve a loading screen. The good part is, when you're questing, you can go 10 hours in an area and never have a loading screen.
2) Voice-Overs, there are very few past Tortage. You get the random quest or two with a voice over, but, it is few and far between.
3) In Tortage, you can actually avoid White Sands & Underhalls (if you're on a PvP server and people are driving you nuts), just do the night time quests and head over to Acheronian Ruins. White Sands and Underhalls gives new trialing players a run for their money on a PvP server. Ganker guilds run rampant and try to make it the worst possible experience for you. It's not so bad past Tortage. Gankers are fairly easy to avoid.
4) Curseforge is a great place for AoC Mods, as is this link on the official forums. Oh and AoC Builder is pretty cool too. You can make your own with this.
Thanks Splinki -- I did get my mods from CurseForge which has helped tremendously. It boggles me that they designed and implemented a UI that is so cumbersome and just plain inefficent. Redesigning it would really go a long way in helping out the game.
I also play LOTRO and have played plenty of other games with loading screens, but I guess my issue is that your main quest line involves having to keep going back there often. In LOTRO, it loads everytime I go to the Prancing Pony, but it just seems there is much less of it.
Also I am not on a PvP server (I'm on Set) so I am not worried about the gankers thankfully.
It has taken me a bit to get used to the combat system for sure. Makes it more fun when I actually have to think about my actions and I have that oh crap moment when I realize that I just used a combo that hits on the side where the enemy has 3 shields.
Lastly, I think they are going to implement it in the next patch, but not being able to logout to the character screen is just plain dumb and also it takes it way too long to check the files everytime I log in.
Get yourself a copy of AoCQS which allows u to bypass the patcher on load
So I can't quote above as new system a bit borked on forums.
You can log out to character screen by doing ALT+F10
You can still order the game from various dealers on Amazon .com ....some brand new in a sealed box for as low as $7.00 (including shipping). Used copies start at $.01 (yes... a penny) plus shipping. I prefer the new games because I don't trust ordering used games that require a product key . Then give it a go for the free 30days that is included. Hardly any expense and the game is well worth it , in my opinion ...even if you don't want to continue after your free month expires.
Here...check out the prices yourself:

Well I started playing last night and after the initial confusion of how to play I seemed to get into my stride and I was able to kill a couple of Boss mobs my level on my lonesome (cant remember if this is good or not). Although I'm missing out on the combo option (which I feel adds a good complexity to the game), I'll carry on with my PoM for a week or so till I make my decision.
I'm currently level 51 and have just started the quests in the Eigpholian (SP?) Mountains as they appear to be around my level. What instances should I be looking forward too around my level? Also what other areas should I be looking to level in? I know I can check the world map ingame, which tells me roughly what level I should be in the area, but as its a very rough guide, I was wondering if I could get more specific info on the forum.
Thanks again,
Dark
I picked up the game from Gamestop for 9.99
@Darkcircuit ...You should also head to the zone next door called Ymir's Pass. I went back and forth, but Ymirs has a better quest line and leads you to Amp Theatre (however you spell) the one with the big Frost Giant.
I think Tords Tomb is your level or a little below which is in the Field of the Dead. That is a pretty fun instance. The boss is a pain, but doable, but for sure not soloable.

I concur with the above get a couple more levels or get to Ymir's Pass you will enjoy it there!
Well I'm now lvl 59 and geeze am I levelling fast, maybe a bit too fast for preference, but hey ho
Regarding Ymir's pass, I went there at 55, have been there ever since and have yet to be blown away. Maybe I got my hopes up a bit too high, but I was expecting something a bit special seeing as it was developed a while after the game was released and they had more time to concentrate on it. I have completed a lot of quests there (not a grinder) and it seems to be more of the same (not necessarily a bad thing and I'm not putting the game down because of it).
P.S. I've heard mention that the earthquakes are being caused by a massive giant walking around, but I've yet to see him or heard him mentioned by an NPC (other than as Ymir). Maybe I'm not being patient enough, I do have a quest to pick up 2 smoking hearts and bring them to some looney in the mountains so maybe that leads onto it.
Let me put it this way; Ymir`s Pass goes all the way to lvl 62/63 and you have yet to reach the climax of the zone. Fast leveling is not a problem, as long as one takes the time to do the things possible. Grinding to lvl 80 as some endgamers do is really not my thing, and I`m sure its not your way either.
Exactly, there is no rush, want to enjoy the ride
The only disapointment I've had so far is the lack of people doing dungeons around my level, I've had to skip them all because spamming lfg channel all day isnt my thing (tried it for over an hour and got no replies). I cant blame the game for that as its more due to the low population in the mid levels, hope this improves as I get closer to 70. Wanted to do the Cistern and Main System, but think I'm going to have to skip them both altogether
Free the Frost Father with a group for some fun!
Hey if you're looking for a levelling buddy on Crom, add me Im 67ish at the moment .
I'm on Crom aswell, currently leveling my Demo, called Moodsie - Level 70.
The game has worst support of any game on the net. Funcom have no interest in customers. I played game from day one of launch forced myself to give it a chance. Left the game after 2 months sub. Re-joined it to see if it had improved from the memory leaky mess it was and ..... no it still sucks.
There are lots of better games out there at this monthly sub. Most games have shelf life pity this one had a shelf life of about 3 weeks.
If you want a game which looks lovely struggles to play on everything but highest end machines and has GM's that are both uninterested and unskilled then this is the game for you. If you want to play a game that is fun to play and user friendly to most P.C's out there dont play this.
My Machine specs
Sapphire Technology ATI Radeon 5970 HD 2GB PCI-Express 2.1 x16 DVI
Intel Core i7-950 3.06GHz LGA1366 8mb
8 GIG RAM
this is absolutely false. dont know much about the game's support, i just joined the trial. but the game runs at 30-40fps all high settings, highest res, on my LAPTOP. about the same as Global Agenda, which was built on a UT3 engine.
