Worth checking out again?

JeyhuJeyhu Member UncommonPosts: 90

Hey I bought the game at launch but left before the end of my free month because it seemed very unpolished.  How is this new patch and is it worth resubbing to check it out?

Seriously, I wouldn't spend 15 bucks to check it out again right now if I were you.  The most amusing blunder over the weekend was the pvp bug that delevelled players about 40 levels or so and removed their skill points. Im not sure if they've figured out a patch for that yet. People say they can't play those characters, so I don't know if that means it affects the ability to use skills or not.  The 45 day patch only added in 2 fleet actions that had place holder npcs giving them out a week or two ago and one of the stf missions.  Other wise just some cosmetic stuff and bug fixes. No end game content except the stf if that's what you're looking for.

Special task force, basically cryptic's equivalent of the 5 man raid. Takes 2-3 hours to go through and loots not all that great.  They released one a couple weeks ago and one on thursday. Cryptic's answer to end game content is to add raid after raid apparently.  Still nothing to do at ra5 unless you like grinding exploration and pvp missions.

Game is still a Train Wreck, and their forum mods are still power mad toolbags.

This sword here at my side dont act the way it should
Keeps calling me its master, but I feel like its slave
Hauling me faster and faster to an early, early grave
And it howls! it howls like hell!

When STO goes to SOE's MMO Grave yard is probably the only time when this will be worth another look.

Not because of the game, the game on its own does have merits,  but the organisation behind it.... and I cant beleive I'm saying it... has less merit than SOE right now.

If you really want to play this terrible game, i'd still wait another whiole year if it's still alive then. They haven't done anything to address all the things wrong with the game. It appears all effort is geared into suckering in more LTS than making a game that would sell because its well done.

Cryptic is lazy, inept, and blatently trying to milk every cent from a poor product.

Instead of even trying to make a decent game, they dumped out a reskin of CO (Another unfinished, unpolished mess) and have spent all their time trying to lie and spin to sell the game. No effort has gone into improving the game, just selling it.

Give them at least a year, and wait till most of Cryptic have been rightfully fired before someone takes the reigns on this train wreck. Right now it's just going off a cliff, and Cryptic is only interested in trying sell seats.

Thanks i'm not going to resub, just really wanted a sci fi fix till SWTOR comes out next year.  There's always APB to play in a few months and i could check out AoC again..

If you want SciFi, right now your only choices are Eve or Anarchy Online. There are some others in the works though.

14 day free trial of EVE is a good bet. Do all the tutorial quests and the extra training quests as well. They're fun and give you lots of equippment, ships and ISK.

I've been playing since headstart, and I'm RA3. I'll likely be RA5 in 1-2 days. All the cosmetic stuff IS nice, and they've fixed several things that has been annoying many people, but there's still more work to be done, as with any MMORPG near release. I'm still not sure if I'll resubscribe or not.

At RA5, there's basically the dailies you can do, the STF's, or PvP. The dailies get you gear that is said to be needed to do the STF's, but that's not true. So the dailies are just something to do if you feel like it, not because they're necessary. The STF's is the hardest content in the game, but there's really no gear gating going on yet, meaning you don't need to gear up from the first STF to complete the second STF. So once you've done them once, it really depends on whether or not you want to stick around to keep doing them until the next one releases.

They'll continue to release new STF's every couple of weeks, so it also depends on whether or not you're interested in doing them when they're popular, or if you want to resub several months from now, when we're 20+ STF's down the line. That's the bad thing about leaving a MMO; you fall behind, and then get mad when no one wants to group with you. So it's something to consider as well.

The next Season, Season 2, is scheduled to release in July, well over 45 days from now, which is contrary to their initial 45 day Update promise. If the above concerns don't bother you, then you're probably better off waiting until Season 2 releases before paying $15. At that point, there may be enough content to warrant that $15, but you'll only leave again most likely after that.

The game is just extremely casual player oriented, so unless you play STO as a second game, or you play < 3 hours a day, this game just isn't for you. This game may get another month from me, mostly due to the good fleet I'm in, but after that I'm pretty much certain I'll never return and that's mostly due to the upcoming MMO releases.

    At cap, you have:

Daily - exact same mission you did 100 times while grinding to cap.

STF - exact same mission(s) you did while grinding to cap. Mix ground and space.

No rare drops worth anything, no accomplishment.

Cryptic release unfinished games because phase 2 of their shady plan includes grind.

Grind means no real work involved for Cryptic, Grind means cutting corners. In short, grind means Cryptic.

They make you grind for costumes, grind for titles, grind for one piece of sub par gear...when I say grind I mean it. I'm talking 5 thousand of X,  when X doesnt guarentee a drop.

Games have done this before, but as a fringe activity for the hardcore.

Cryptic relies on it as an ace in the hole to keep us playing, because they are lazy.

Lets prove the scammers at Cryptic wrong.

Best choice is to to play something else until TOR comes out. I've went back to World of Warcraft and started rolling a new character. There's more exploration where you start as an undead character in Brill and Tirisfal Blades than in all of STO. Plus I have nice things to do on the side like mining or skinning in between the fighting.

As I'v seen another poster state you will be better off waiting something like a year if the game was too devoid of content for you within the first month, as stated I think at most they have added something like 3 quest arcs (honestly it was so uninspiring I couldn't be bothered to look up exactly what it was.) and a bunch of cosmetic items that are equally uninspiring.  I really wonder when they state these ideas out loud to themselves does anyone actually get excited, or expect the player base to?

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

I would say no, if you left the game before for reasons of it being lacking then nothing has changed in that regard and in all liklihood months and months and months will not change that.  STO is simply a small, simplisitic action coop game - either you enjoy the same combat mechanics over and over with different aseroid fields and a few different ship models or you don't.

I played from open beta through the end of the first month leaving around the 3rd week of live simply for boredome with the repetitive nature of the game and its incredible ease and lack of complexity.  I had a second retail key though from a pal who bought the game but got put on a project at work that kept him from having time to play so I still had time through like Apr 3.  I just came back this weekend to check it out post the big patch and I was stunned, and I mean stunned, at how little has changed.  So far as I can tell they have spent nearly 60 days adding some useless fluff to the c-store, and little more.  Yeah, they added a few missions but there is little new about them, they are the same as everything else in the game, load screen - kill a group of baddies, run to shiny thing and hit use, load screen, rinse and repeat.  The game is just going nowhere and slowly.  Also, for a single server game it is incredibly sparse in poulations.  through the weekend and today (was home much of today) I cannot imagine there could have been more than a couple thousand people playing even at peak times and off peak you would be hard pressed to find areas with more than 50 to 100 total in the collective instances of that area, it is really bad.

Go see for yourself I suppose, but I cannot imagine anyone really making the argument that there is a single solitary thing in game now that is worth paying $15 to see verse what was there when you left the first month.  And not only that, all the small annoynaces are still there in full force (slow loads and flaky servers, repetition, button mashing ground crap, etc, etc, etc).  If the rest of the life of this game goes as the first 60 days have in terms of development - this game will need 3 to 5 years to get to the state it should have been in at launch and that is not accouting for the things that will never change do to Crytpics lack of talent/ability and the engine's lack of capabilities.

As the game stands at the moment, i cannot in good conscience recommend it to anyone. Very little has been done to address the basic issues that have been a problem since the launch of the game, several new bugs have been introduced through poorly applied patches, and the community has become rather obnoxious.  Unless you want to spend your time making your bridge look different, or giving your bridge crew pigtails there is little point coming back after Season 1.

How has the community become obnoxious? I played in beta and decided to wait a while. Cryptic did City of Heroes, and that game changed and evolved a LOT. I was hoping STO did too.

Ooh boy. Best thing I can recomend is to visit Startrekonline.com and see for yourself. It's the saddest collection of butt kissers and apologists I've ever seen on a gaming site. Any thread started with the intention of pointing out what needs to be fixed is automatically trounced on by the CBK (Cryptic Butt Kissers). The Devs don't help matters by egging this behavior on.They even make trolling statements of their own when they are challenged by anyone. It's the most unproffessionally ran site I have ever seen.

No matter HOW any crtisicism toward the game is worded, it's labelled as being a hater and unconstructive.  The only way to be considered constructive is to first heap praise on the devs then beg them to implement changes.  Any criticism of any type is quickly turned into a "qq more, you hater" flame war. Any time a couple of the mods step in to do anything about it, they do so with a dig at the OP and a wink, wink to the fans. I guess that's what happends when you have mods chatting on the boards about twilight and their favorite ship names instead of doing their jobs.

You all will judge an ENTIRE community based on the forum community? The forum community is a small percentage of the actual community.

Correction it started off as just the forums, but the "Cryptic can do no wrong so STFU!" attitude has spread into the game. Now there are lifer only guilds springing up, anyone who dares say anything negative on the chat channel finds themselves silenced for 24 hours.

And yeah, we will judge a community based on the forums, because everyone considering the game will too. The forums are the most visible part of the community to those not currently playing the game, do you really think many people will want to play when most topics feature constant insults and trolling by Blues?

I am so glad I returned the game before I had to activate my retail key.  I was even considering getting a life sub during OB.  Thank goodness I pass on that as well.  Honestly that was the worst community I had ever been a part of on a MMO and I've played plenty.

There where dozens of  "i quit" posts on the STO  forum.  Now, moderators are removing these posts on the spot even the ones containing good hearted critic and suggestions. A newcomer to STO's forum will get the impression that everything is fine with the game. In case someone writes something negative the fanboys come down to him like a ton of bricks.

STO needs a complete overhaul. Idealy someone should take the ip of Cryptics hands and make the game as it should be.

I wanted to like this game. Wanted to like it very much. But I cannot play it anymore. It's worse right now, than Aion, and I really didn't think that was possible.

(Playing nothing atm, waiting on Earthrise, or Xyson, or something (!) that will give more fun than stress, lol)
