Seriously, why such a colorless world? I'm talking about the in-game footage they just released, not the artistic "screenshots" on their website. Hopefully that video was either an April fools joke or they happened to show us the most boring, colorless part of their world.
I have more color going on in my office cubicle for chocobo's sake.
I'm not asking for some cartoon world like in WoW but without some vibrancy it seems so boring and drab.

I'll reply to this although I think it is just troll fishing and won't be very constructive... people will find something to complain about no matter what :P that is just the way the community on these forums are.
Limsa Lominsa is a sandy bay/port like town located underneath cliffs, that is the place being portrayed in the video. It looked pretty good too me and goes along with its description quite well. I would say wait until you see areas like Gridania if you are wanting the 'magical' color type areas.
The art direction taken is going to be like FFXI (art and design in FF games are very similar), more realism instead of cartoonish types. I know that is kind of like taboo to this generation of gamers. But meh, old school isn't everyones cup of tea, if you don't like it that is fine, it isn't for everyone thankfully.
True, and that is in all forums. People will find something to complain just the sake of complaining.
I personally loved the video, way more than the one they had at gamescon. Watching that video I really have a hard time waiting to play this >.>.
Like as if they won't have different areas in the game or something, get real dude.
Magical word that works for situations like this: "Alpha".
Did you know, that in LOTRO alpha and even beta, the player characters didn't have walking or even running animations- at all? They just slid on the ground like statues.
Uncharted 1, considered a pretty damn good looking PS3 game, sported high-end PS2 graphics in it's alpha/beta stage. It looked quite horrible, with low res textures, clunky animations and so on. Only just before the retail version hit the shelves the textures and graphics were changed to how they are today.
So, whatever the alpha footage shows you, is only 50% at max of what the game will look and play like once in retail. Interesting move on SE's part to release such vids, when ignorant people that don't know how alphas work watch them (and I'm not saying this in an insulting way, I was just as ignorant before too).. But I certainly appreciate the effort.
Like in FFXI different zones had different nature.
The starting town of humans and galka is a desert sort of, elves/mithra/taru flowers, trees, orcs and whatever.
Dind't the video of Limsa Lominsa remind you of Bastok in FFXI?
And to the OP, yeah cause all of the zones in the game will look like that. right? am I right?
If you played FFXI, you had a wide variety of zones, really awesome. Places like Sanctuary of Zi'Tah compared to Valkurn Dunes, or Castle Astrojo compared to Yhotor Jungle.
I have NO DOUBT there's going to be some amazing, beautiful, and yes, very scary places to explore and experience. From what iv'e seen, I want more.
It's becomming a waste of time to frequent the FF14 forum as of late... most of the threads are started by people who are perfectly content to make up their minds about the game by viewing alpha footage, and making absured "WoW clone" comments.
Never argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level, then beat you with experience.
where can i see this video? i dont see it on the main website.
I find the more realistic environments refreshing. Lately all we've been force fed is looney toons WoW clones.

As we all know there are always areas in mmo's that we love and hate. I'm sure everyone on these forums can remember places that they loved to level at and places that weren't so much fun due to the visual nature of the area. I'm sure FFXIV will have some amazing places that will capture all audiences.
I like the design of FFXIV, just like I loved the design of FFXI.
My husband always complained about the colorless world of FFXI.
I wonder what he thinks about the new video of FFXIV, but I just know he is going to complain, not enough color, stupid character design.
We played a lot of MMORPG's together, but FFXI he only played like 15 minutes. (I played it for 2,5 years)
I want to play FFXIV together with him, but he probably will quit after 15 min. again...
Why do people read so much into so little infomation. Jumping to conclusions at this point is foolish at best.
What little I have seen, It looks like a normal setting you would see every day. Unless of course you live near a Turkish fair that is.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
I don't see how vivid a town can be... I generally look around cities in real life and think "wow this is a lot of grey and brown"
Unless its night time and there are neon lights I guess. I dunno if you want to see pretty look at the other videos where you see them standing over water falls and majestic scenery like that.
I'm sure we'll see some really interesting places too, one of the things Final Fantasy does well is scenery, very well in my opinion.
Ah, I'm sorry. I didn't realize being in a desert town that everyone's clothes would be tan and brown, and that all decorations would be tan and brown, and that colorful fruit would be tan and brownish.
Very nice of everyone to take one line from my post and focus on that. Must not have noticed the second part of my third sentence that says "or they happened to show us the most boring, colorless part of their world". Most of you just confirmed that statement by telling me that of course it's brown and tan and ugly because it's in the desert.
I'm fully familiar with the FF series of games and absolutely love them. I've been in countless beta tests over the years and a few alpha tests and realize it's not finished. I also realize that just about every game that's been at this point in development is darn near locked in stone as far as visual assets go, hence my concern in seeing the first in-game video. Unless this game is much earlier in development than they seem to be portraying by presenting this video.
My point is that if someone that knows nothing about FFXIV were to watch this video they would think exactly what I posted. This video is supposed to be their first publicly released video full of fanfaire and they chose such a bland presentation. When I go to FFXIV's website to look at video and screenshots I see they have a couple of what appear to be scripted CGI videos, and they have a bunch of artwork screenshots. That all does have color, so that's great, assuming that comes over to the actual game.
And for those that mentioned the real world is full of browns and tans I feel sorry for where you live. I'm looking out my window and see blues, greens, reds, yellows, etc. I look around my house and see, yep, more colors. Real life isn't dull and bland, so I don't know why people think games that are trying to be "lifelike" should be dull and bland looking.
And I also state in my post I'm NOT expecting to see a cartoon colored world but that it would be nice to see SOME color. Very subdued fruit and a few pink fish amongst so much brown and tan doesn't seem to express much hope for anything more than finding more brown and tan. I did see that the water was blue. That was pretty.
I'm heartened to hear that the rest of the world isn't as drab as this premier video though. I look forward to seeing actual in-game footage of other locations.
So sorry I expressed some doubt in your game. Yikes... I'll try and keep my observations and concerns to myself next time.
Well, this is what they're aiming for, at least.

Well I saw some blue and green and other colors here and there. But where they were at there was a lot of wood and stone thus the brown and tan. It looks to me the PC"s were all wearing starter gear so its very bland looknig armor. Maybe the people in that town just like Brown and Tan a lot. I really don't mind it, Im sure its not like that everywhere. All I can say its better than having all this color and feeling like your trippin' balls.
Well, the last time I went to Arizona everything was Tan and brown. Every roof was shingled in the same brownish rid, and the sand was tan. I personally would not prefer to have a desert made of purple moogle dung and yellow chocobo chips....
Make it so...
Maybe you could try getting a new monitor? It doesn't seem dull to me or anyone else apparently so maybe it's you?
Just sounds like you are overreacting just a bit here just to get a rise out of people, so expect a bit of hostile responses from the community. If you can dish it out you can take it yeah? I don't know man... the only people that seem to dislike it are people that already had their mind made up that they don't like FF MMOs or Japanese games in general.
I don't think you saw the other gameplay videos.
Another post with someone complaining about something, how drab.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
Hehe :P
Seriously though. Just take a look at the officially released screenshots. Both the landscape and characters. There is nothing to be worried about. Like in all other alphas, a lot of it could be placeholders, or it's just that cities particular theme.
I disgree completely. The grass on the mountside could not have looked any greener and healthier or the water could not have looked any more blue. Looked great to me. Seems like everyone that posts on forums is there to complain.
I think there was quite some contrast between the colorless hills and town and the extremely green grass and blue water. I think they'll keep adjusting it to find a good middleground.
Dunno if it was just me but the grass just seemed to pop when i watched that first vid. Almost like i could see every blade.
