With all thats been said, Funcom BETTER release a polished game with this title. If gamers give them a second chance and they fail to deliver, I doubt anyone will ever buy another product from them again.
Third Chance...people conveniently forget the Anarchy Online launch debacle.
I haven't
This is true, I don't think funcom has released a game thats launched flawlessly, ever. I'm not going to call them inept, because I doubt I could do any better, but I will say that I am watching this game closely. I do not have much faith in funcom to release this game in a successful, appealing-long-term, state. I would be pleasantly surprised if they prove me wrong though.
Name one MMO that did launch flawlessly...
Exactly. I can guarantee you the game will be launched with bugs, content gaps, hacks, cheats, and everything else under the moon. Then it will be patched, fixed, content added for several years after. You know. Just like all other MMO's ever released
If you can't take it I suggest chess. It's been debugged for a couple millenias.
Still no fix for that 4 move checkmate exploit...
Whilst no MORPG has luanched flawlessly there are varying degrees of how flawed they were at launch and both AoC and AO are at the botom rung fo that ladder. Also what was acceptable when the genre was in it's infancy and still really an experiment is not acceptable today. It's like exusing Airplane crashes today because Orville Wright crashed The Flyer in 1908.

The following changes were made in the patch on May 3, 2007:
Guardians can now play some musical instruments at level 5.
Fixed a bug with "Mischievous Glee" (Burglar) and "Sign of Power: Wizardry" (Lore-master) that was causing some enemies to assist the player in combat.
The sky-diving NPC in Bree has been grounded, and will stop dropping from the sky now.
In the “Shield Brothers” quest, players will no longer have to worry if the wight slave is killed by someone else. Using the barrow door again will cause the wight to re-appear so they can complete the quest.
Bosses in instances are no longer scared of the players! They are immune to fear and will not be sent running like little scared hobbitses!
Players can now destroy any and all of their Pre-order items if they so wish. This includes, but is not limited to, the Ring of Agility. Be warned, however, that once you've destroyed the item, that character can never get it back!
Removed uncommon & rare loot drops from Tarburz the Wood Troll.
Fixed a problem where some players were unable to enter any private instances.
The problem with Undying titles not being granted to players has been identified and fixed. We’re still looking into whether we can retroactively grant the titles to those who didn’t receive them because they were fellow’d up in an instance with another player who died. This may not be possible, but we’ll try!
Fixed pathing issues with the Rhavameldir encounter in Fornost and the Lagmas encounter in Urugarth.
The Auction UI will now properly enable Kinship Only options when an online player’s Kinship reaches the appropriate Lifespan Rank (6).
Fixed the following bugs on machines running Windows XP. A Windows Vista fix is still being investigated:
Players will no longer see their Overall Graphics Quality as "Custom" when they log in if they had originally set it to Low, Med, High, Very High, etc.
Fixed a bug which caused certain Graphics Options to reset to 0 every time the game was started.
Known Issue for May 3 patch:
On the quest ‘Fresh Steed for Bree’, Éogar sends you to Bree to deliver a horse to Bill Rosewood. You’ll notice that a quest ring does not appear over Bill’s head (or on the radar). Ride the horse up to him as closely as possible to complete the quest - that should get his attention!

Yeah but this is the way I see it.
If mmo's are 10ish years old, then your analogy really is like
the Flyer crashing in 1908 and then in 1918 expecting a F-15 when what you get is the Sopwith Camel from WWI.
First let me say I enjoy Age of Conan as it is now . When i can get a cheap time card on ebay I play for a couple of months now and then . But i remember what it was like upon launch . This worries me a little because although I like the look of the Secret World and think it could be the most original mmo in a while , I've been burnt by Funcom before . I hope this does turn out to be a great game but I think I will be one of those adopting the wait and see approach this time around . Anyone else feel the same way out there ?
No, I judge each game on it's own merits, not because of the company who develops it.

I see flaws.
There are flawless launches liek LOTRO, FE, CoX and the like, that were playable.. and then theres AO and AoC... the only launches I could think of that were worse would probably be Vanguard or MxO that I've experienced. I do hear Darkfall was pretty bad with terrible queues.
Funcom really goes all out on bad launches.. to deny that LOTRO was on the complete other end of the spectrum.. with Funcom being one of the lowest on successful launches, would be ridiculous.
There is an whol different team sow I am not worried at al. The gamedirector(known for dream fall....) and some of the team has been working on it for ower 7 years sow there is not mutch in the content thats the same in the games. The pluss for TSW is that the Game coremotor/working tools(makinging items) was developet on the AoC budget. The size of the budget on AoC is the same as TSW sow there will be alot more quests/playfields in TSW and a lot fewer bugs becouse of this.
You cant realy expect the same problems with TSW. AoC was rushed in the end and the gamedirecter realy fucked upp the game as we all know. He left Funcomi in August allmost 20 months ago.
Thwe uppcomming AoC expantion and TSW is going to be great. Just check them out and dont sitt alone in the dark.
The ideas behind this game are great, and I am excited to see it realised. Of course, it uses the same engine as AoC. Depending on how the AoC expansion works out with regards to chunked, larger open spaces, particularly, I might have a better idea of how this game will work out.
Funcom did make The Longest Journey, which remains one of the best games I've played. But then, Aoc seems to have a lack of focus; It tries to create a real vibrant world that can exist as a sandbox, but also tried to appeal to theme park players, and they seem to have failed at both.
As I hinted at before, to me, one of the most important things in an MMO is large, open spaces. I need to feel like I am in a single, contiguous world that is populated by other people, and that we all have the ability to control that world to some extent. With AoC, everything feels like distinct locations, and that prevents me from being engaged in the world. It makes me feel like I am in a single player game, which is not what I pay money each month to feel. If I want "levels," I can go to a FPS or something.
Of course, everyone wants something different, and this is a different team from AoC. I tend to trust Ragnar Tørnquist. Craig-whatever did it wrong. If The Secret World can be a fraction as compelling as The Longest Journey, you can count on this girl to be playing it for quite some time.

Actually, Craig has done everything about 101% correct, as the game is coming around. You`re thinking of the former GM, Gaute (who actually founded Funcom in early 90s) and he was also GM on Anarchy Online in 2001. Ragnar has been behind the story of AO, and The Longest Journey series.
I think as the Dreamworld engine grows stronger, and the general average PC gets more powerful, the game will go smoother for everyone. AoC was never meant to go on a 2 GB ram PC it seems.(But then again, why do I care, I got 8 GB )
After watching the trailer, I am less interested in this game. The trailer was very unimaginative, and the game just looked kinda blah. It may be too early to judge, but it doesn't look good so far, imo.
What makes the game an automatic dealbreaker for me is the AoC engine. It's a preference thing. I don't like discrete zones. I'm an open world MMO kinda guy. So, even if the game looked outstanding, I still probably wouldn't play it based on the engine.
"You'll never win an argument with an idiot because he is too stupid to recognize his own defeat." ~Anonymous
Think Ill sit this one out for the first 6 months, then if its gets amazing reviews and there a trial I might give it a try. And yes I feel bad towards Failcom for the shit state of AoC when It released, payed good money for a half finished game.
So many are always talking about the bad AoC launch. Let me tell you, I had great fun from start in AoC. Even while I think AoC was released way too early and there were annoying bugs, still I enjoyed playing it from the start.
The same applies to other MMO's who had an oh so bad launch, I was playing them and thinking 'wth are they whining about?'
If flawlessness and perfection is what you're expecting, then prepare for a lot of disappointment with MMO's and launches, better than to just wait until the games have been live for a year or longer. Me, I'd rather shrug, don't think too much of the bugs I encounter and enjoy the game - and if they're too much a game breaker, the bugs, then I'll unsub and wait until I get the impression that things have changed.
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."

As mentioned by many AOC had a shocking launch ..full of bugs
What really bothered me was the lies ...the features that weren't in the game but were promised
No one expects perfection..but we demand honesty as paying consumers
To answer the OP ...yes I am interested in TSW but due to AOC calamitous launch I'll be monitoring it's progress before I actually pay for anything
AO had a way worse launch than AoC. There were massive technical problems and people couldn't even get into the game. AoC had very high requirements for the time, so many people had problems running it. The game itself ran well enough.
The main problems were the lack of quest content in the later tier of the game, the broken and buggy siege system, and the seriously unbalanced itemization which destroyed pvp. Its clear that the game was rushed for release, and these finer points of the game were not tested enough.
AoC was certainly disapointing at launch in several aspects, but it was not nearly as bad as some people claim.
Funcom's track record is a little concerning, but TSW should be judged based on its own merits and beta process just like any other mmo.
Funcom are rank amatures so sadly no matter how good this game looks it will inevitably suck as they are totally unable to manage any game. They must employ the most unskilled workforce on the internet as they fail at all levels. Sadly I learned this by experience I wish I never gave them money but I have on 2 occasions there will not be a third.
Im sure many people did enjoy AoC from the start and many still do; but your in the minority following the mass exodus of the player-base 2-3 months post launch leading up to server merges, of which occurred again recently.
So it's not the majority that need to be forgiving of Funcom, it's Funcom that needs to win the confidence and trust of a player-base; even if it's a different development team. That's just the reality.
No, not as worried at all. Simply because the guy who was in charge of AoC pre-launch is no longer at the company. The bloke who is in charge now has seen to it that AoC got the attention it needed and has turned it into a good game. I can only assume that this same attention to quality is being applied to Secret World. It's a dream I have.
Poor poor naive people never learn Gaute sucvks for sure and is gone from funcom but funcom has ALWAYS released half assed products for YEARS now Gaute has nothing to do with Funcoms constant pushing stuff out to cash grab.Anarchy-Online I think is still top of the worse releases ever by a mmog company. If you think for ONE minute Secret World release will be any different than anything funcom has ever done to its customers you need to go get checked.

Agreed.
Just because its a new game doesnt mean the company behind it gets a blank slate. They need to show thier customers that they are willing to make an effort and have things work a lot better this time around.
While I, myself, have been watching this game and been dying to try it, I know Funcom has a long way to go to prove that they want a game that launches great and offers most if not all of the features it promised for release. They also have to show that the attitude they had with the launch of AoC (the whole 'lalalalalalalalala-alls fine- lalalalalalala' crap) is gone and that they are more willing to be upfront and honest with the customer.
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

Wrong Gaute didn't lay a finger on Anarchy-Online until Shadowlands
I was more disappointed with AoC than any other game I've played, up until STO. It may be a solid game now (2 years later), but few MMOs ever recover population wise from such a bad launch. AO is still regarded as one of the worst MMO launches ever...that's makes them 0/2 on MMO launches. I'm sure I'll check out TSW eventually, maybe like a year after launch, but there's no way I'd even consider picking this up at launch.

Aside from a few people in here (and all their friends, naturally) I doubt very many people care too much who launches a game. I'd even hazard a guess to say most people who has played AO and AoC are not aware which company was behind the games and that it was the same. The people bowsing these forums are well above averagely informed as most people who will try the game is just going to pick it up from a shelf without any prior knowledge.
Also, the problems which affected AO and AoC at launch were quite different. Maybe they can avoid both pitfalls next time. In the end the game will stand and fall on its own merits, not its predecessors.

I must agre with you on all points. I hope that people got videocard and memory to run TSW when it lanches in 18 months.

Age of Conan is a good game.
So, to answer your thread's title.
No, I'm not worried.

"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it." Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
WTF? No subscription fee?

1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
