I believe OP is extremely narrow-minded. I would even argue that a small percentage of people who play MMO's actually care about having power over other people. That small percentage however probably are guild leaders and people who love to run raids etc.......so these people are very active in the community. These are the no-lifers who play MMO's 10 hours a day to make them feel like their lives are actually worth something.
Most MMO players like MMO's for other less dillusional reasons. Such as working together to finish a goal, character customization, pvp competition, playing a single player game with chat, character development etc.
I would go as far to say that the most common thing i see in MMO's is people with the "look at me my character it is better then yours" mentality. This has nothing to do with power though as these people don't want to control you they just want your approval. EVE online has by far the most "look at me i'm better then you" attitude of any game i have played and it can get exhausting.
Anyways rant off
Playing: PO, EVE Waiting for: WoD Favourite MMOs: VG, EVE, FE and DDO Any person who expresses rage and loathing for an MMO is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae.
Can someone explain to me how having shinier gear, more achievement points, more gold, higher rank, etc, gives you any power over other players?
Maybe I am missing something here, but those people who raid and have much better gear than me have no power over me. They might like to think they do, and their reasoning for playing the game may be to gain this sense of illusory power but it's all in their heads. They don't have any power over anyone, be it in the virtual world or the real world.
And I don't think the majority of MMO players are playing with this delusion - the most vocal dipshits that scream across forums and general chat are in a massive minority.
