First, I think that "the top 10 mmorpg's I like" is something good for a thread on the forums, but for an article that topic is a bit underwhelming, since it adds nothing new, teaches nothing, gives no new information. It just tells me why some guy I don't know likes some games which I might have played or not.

Apart from that, my personal list would be:
1. FE
2. WoW
3. WAR
4. TR
5. AoC
6. LOTRO
7. EVE
Uhm and the rest doesn't belong on the list.
*shrugs*
You did not put Everquest, Ultima, or Everquest 2 on your list. Anyone that makes a list without thouse 3 should not even make one as Ultima and Everquest put the whole mmo market on the map. PS: What is FE and TR?
The problem with putting WoW at #1 is that it's only there because of the success it's had. The game has been out long enough that its boring now and if I were making up that list it most likely would hve been 3rd or 4th. LOTRO, AoC, Warhammer then WoW (with maybe WoW tieing with War instead of behind it).
I don't feel like WoW is a go to game anymore, in fact I'd rather be puking up warm beer than playing WoW. That's the way I feel now, a year and a half ago I'd have WoW at the top but after playing since the month after launch, having tried out all the classes, and now with having 3-80's 2-70+'s and multiple 30-40's the thrill is gone. I can't say in a year from now i won't be playing WoW again but the chance is far greater that I won't than I will.

It's boring now, because people have played it to death. They have played so much because it is a high-quality game.
It no longer appeals to me for various reasons, but that does not detract from its objective quality.

Warhammer is garbage and should not even be on the list. If you want a good pvp mmo play daoc or aion.
First, yes you can have an opinion about an opinion. If you want to think it's a bad list more power to you. Personally I think it's a sad list. So many of those games could have been so much better than they are with just a little more thought put into the design and better budgeting of time and resources in production. Is this really the best developers can do?
It's as good as they have to do. MMO standards are very low as a genre.

Guys, just stop posting! read the introduction again.... its clearly an article intended to flame us!
I've had warnings for flaming on these forums before, so how do we go about warning you about flaming us?.
Youve deliberatly made a list of things to incite anger and provoke baseless argument. Anyone with half a brain cell can see that you've delibertly put games on the list to provoke. You dont just destroy your own credability you damaged the credability of mmorpg.com, you guys are supposed to be the pro's, people we turn to for guidance and understanding.
With this article you only reveal that your unqualified, and that your employer is also unqualified.
You put Auto Assault anywhere on your list and you fail.. But you put in Auto Assault and leave off EQ1? Other's were first but EQ1 made the genre viable, to leave it off is insulting.

There is nothing pro about this site.. Anyone who has played MMO's for awhile knows that this site is a joke.. People only come here to jack up their favorite pre-released game and flame on others, or bash Sony.. It's quite entertaining

The term is "trolling", but otherwise, you are correct. I considered reporting the OP, but I am sure it would do no good, as he works here.
These lists ARE efforts to increase activity on the site.

HAHA. Nice reply.
It better be. Because with presently 154 logged in users worldwide, the site looks like a 12 year old MMORPG without much expansions.
Want a real mmorpg? Play WOW with experience turned off mode and be Pve_Pvp King at any level without a rat race.
Yet you miss Eve, Aion and a few others that I believe are undenyably bigger and better MMO's for reason. I have to say I more then LOL'ed when I read that list and the reasons for the picks.. I'm still chuckling..
I completely disagree with the list and I am also, much like the owner of the list, a so called MMO veteran. My first MMO was UO and I was there all the way from beta to just after trammel.
However, as the author seems to think that WoW was the high point of MMOGs I think it was the low point. WoW put the final nail in the preverbial coffin for "hardcore" sandbox games, with an attempt to create a virtual world, and started a new era of constant themepark games which did little to try and create a world but rather empasided that it is a game.
With the huge success of WoW it was then clear to all MMOG devs that the money lies in themepark and here we are at 2010 with only one sandbox MMOG worth to be mentioned (Eve). All other major titles are themeparks, built on the same concepts of WoW (themepark, casual, linear, controlled PvP, instances), with their own twist.
AoC, WAR, CoX, EQ 2, Aion, LotRO, STO are all essentially WoW clones (themepark, casual, linear, controlled PvP, instances). Great if you like WoW type of games, terrible if you like sandbox "virtual world" type MMOGs..

Because I'm really curious, could you name me what the big sandbox games were pre-WoW, outside of UO? What were the 'hardcore' sandbox games that had a large number of subscribers for it's time?

It's a serious question.
I'm going a bit 'stream of conciousness' here, so bear with my short hijack.
This makes me think of Fallen Earth - it's not sandbox, as players can't change the world to any serious degree, but it has very little in regards to gameplay features. It's a themepark with no rides.

Thx for the list mine would go as follows there are many on my list that did not make yours.
10. Vanguard
9. Aion
8. Ultima Online
7. Age of Conan
6. Lord of the Rings online
5. Everquest
4. SWG
3. FFXI
2. WOW
1. Everquest 2
Note that my 1 and 2, and 3 are very close. In the end though I think EQ2's great depth and community wins me over.

I was a little late to the MMO Party as I started with SWG. My top five are:
SWG (Pre-NGE)
LOTRO
WOW
EQ2
AOC -- I only started playing recently so I missed the FUBUR that was launch.
LOL I knew this thread would be filled with hate as soon as Bill listed WoW as his favorite MMO. Well, "filled" might be a bit strong.
You REALLY think WoW being #1 is more controversial than Warhammer being #2?
