BattleTech - The Forgotten Niche

CrimsonFalkonCrimsonFalkon Member UncommonPosts: 46

I remember back when I used to play Battletech on paper, and then consoles started adapting some games for it, and yet I have seen no MMO idea or concept for this type of game.

Why?

What would be bad about a game where you can have and customize large Battle Mechs?

Use Drop Ships?

Have Mech PvP battles?

The IP has plenty of room for a MMO and it has all the factional warfare one could want. So why hasn't anyone picked it up?

We have D&D, so why can't we get BattleTech?

It would be interesting if .. yes.. IF it's done right.. You would have to get a team that takes the IP and does something with it, other then use it for the next quick grab for cash.. I think having multiple worlds, with multiple factions would be a good start.  I'd structure it for 75% PvE.. and 25% consensual PvP.. I would love to have a crack at being a dev on that game.. Think of all the crafting and min/max abilities for different types of mechs..  Don't hold our breath...

maybe not the IP but something to look into

God i loved battletech back in the day... I still have some of the figurines from the game left. Its a awesome world for a MMO to use... But doing it right wouldn't b so easy.

Still single player mech games were able to "capture" the feeling... Who knows maybe one day Microsoft will make a new MMO from Mechwarior frenchise.

I've been uplinked and downloaded, I've been inputted and outsourced. I know the upside of downsizing, I know the downside of upgrading.

There's been a couple attempts at mech-based MMOs, all Asian F2P types, all horrible.

The Battletech IP, on the other hand..OK I will go on record as saying ANY of the old FASA games that made it to MMO (Battletech, Shadowrun, Earthdawn) would be a sub from me, if done halfway decently. However, it will probably never happen. FASA sold the rights off willy-nilly to a bunch of groups when they shut down. I beleive most of the Battletech IP is owned by Microsoft at the present moment, although I'd heard something about one of FASA's founders trying to buy it back.

One founder of FASA leased the rights to BT from Microsoft and is apparently making a new Mechwarrior game.

BT is about way more than simply battlemechs, so I don't see the asian games or even Perpetuum as terribly relevant. The world of BT is rich and lends itself well to an MMO, and the lore and previous battle systems means could bring some much needed diversity to the MMO genre.

I suppose that is much of the reason why we haven't seen a Battletech style MMO. Devs would not be able to make the usual reskinned WOW-clone. Can you imagine Battletech as the usual stand-still and watch countdowns on your hotbar game? Can you imagine running to and fro quest-givers who tell you to kill 10 Jenners? -Neither can I. It would be totally lame.

A properly made MMO - one that is based on the original tabletop game could be quite awesome. I'm sure that is why we have this discussion every couple of weeks. But a poorly made clone such as most MMOs are would never be accepted by fans of Battletech.

Smith and Tinker is actually a new company by the original creater of battle tech. Still one of the best table top games I have played (along with 40K). They are working on the relaunch of the Mechwarrior series (basically mechwarrior 5 without calling it that). Looks like it may be another year or so on it but hopefully it will be good. As for an MMO, it "could" be awesome.

We get a thread about this every couple of months or so. I agree that it would be very good, IF handled right.

I apologize if this has been a topic for discussion before, I must have missed those.

I am sure, as many have said, that IF done properly it would be a great MMO, but alas we have no such company that would put the time or effort into "breaking the mold" as it were to achieve such a feat.

I will, for now, sit back and dream of piloting a Mech around, using jump jets, and waiting for my heat sinks to counter my gun and missle atacks!
