Nvidia's new gtx 480 sold out already?!

csthaocsthao Member UncommonPosts: 1,122

Well I really can't say I was surprised...But I was going to order one myself so I checked out newegg.com and what do you know, it was sold out. Every single brand was all sold. So I decided to go to tigerdirect.com and it doesnt seem like they have it. So I suppose I'll have to wait a bit before I can order one. Have anyone ordered it yet and know where I can find one?

There simply will not be high availability of these parts, and likely won't be until their second revision is out sometime at the end of the year.  First there are too many production problems, and the yields are poor.  Next, resellers are required to buy two to four times older Nvidia parts for every 480 or 470 part they buy.  Finally neither are the parts profitable to Nvidia at current yields.

If you really want a GTX480 or 470 then you will need to pre-order one or sign up for all the email alerts and be ready to order in a moment's notice.  Otherwise wait for Rev2 to hit, hopefully Nvidia and GF will have worked through their problems by then.

Didn't they only fab 10k chips in the first batch?  Not really alot.  The GF100 isn't an architecture you want to be a first adopter on anyway.  You definetly wanna wait until the more refined chips come out.

It's not even released yet. The launch was a paper launch, cards are expected to actually ship on the 12th but not in quantity. So they aren't sold out yet, it's not even time to start looking yet. Availability is expected in June/July.

Cleffy, I read they ordered 9k wafers, and each wafer supports ~105 chips, but factor in yield rate of something like 20% to 40% for both 480 and 448 cores (no 512 core parts) and you get something around 30k chips made.

Fermi was the most ultimate paper launch in history. We won't see any availability before B1 comes, meaning probably next year.

Yet there were more fermi cards avaiable on launch than the 58XX. The 58XX cards weren't available in any sort of quantity until Jan 2010 and even up unti March you would have problems getting a good brand.

Basic economics is involved. Restrict supply and you can charge a higher price. From a marketing perspective it adds to the "mystique" and uniqueness. It will also force people to buy more lower end cards which probably has a higher profit margin.

It's all hype, the benchmarks show them being lackluster.  ATI still has NVIDIA by the balls, both on high end (5970) and 480 price point (5870).

The ATI 5970 is by far the fastest card out at the moment, and the Nvidia 480 is $100 more than the ATI 5870 for only a very very very small increase in performance, plus the 480 is loud and sucks a lot of juice.

They need to lower their prices to be competitive with ATI.

That's bullcrap. Ati reported at January that they had sold 2 million 5800 series cards. You are mixing up low production and high demand.

Fermi however truly has currently very low yields, and you won't see it changing before they put out B1 revision.

    This.

I've been an Nvidia guy forever, but I'm finally going to jump to the dark side and get an ATI card, there's just no reason to buy an Nvidia card right now.

Sig so that badges don't eat my posts.

ya ati as been breaking record for yeild result ,as been doing so for a long while now .why they dont release newer bigger card

why would they ?driver optimisation ?most of their card are on par still with nvidia and ati is still king of the hill even if nvidia wish it was otherwise.

so they can take the time to release new tecchno

its been 10 month since the release of the 5xxxx serie.do you hoestly beleive ati as been sitting idle all these month

of caurse not they are ready to release bigger badder card if need be so far no challenger came fort

nvidia is still 10 month behind and the word is intel changed their idea .no we dont dismiss intel because only fool dismiss intel

they were 1 ear behind in the processor business and are 1 to 2 year ahead now intel being behind doesnt mean squat

intel is very close to take head on ati,and ati knows this so i bet ati is much more concerned from an intel treat then from an nvidia treat these days but they keep a look out just in case

why intel?intel as already shrinked their process to 32 nm and memory to 22 or 25 nm that was 6 month ago from intel!

Well with someone with an almost 70% market share, however this inculdes the dubious you have no choice off the shelf type builds like Dell, I really dont think they give a flying monkey f*** , as their product will sell no matter what.

The same stuff almost word for word was said about the last 2 production runs of the Nvidia cards and the 9 series sucked yet with the help of good (in their case) busissness sense, ie off the shelf brand names deals, they still sold more at a higher price than ATi, no that doesnt make sense does it, unless the product brand name is stronger, ie Coke is higher in price than Pepsi, yet coke still out sells.

The ATi and Nvidia thing reminds me to much of Windows versus linux conversation, and held by the same type of people no less.

ATi make bloody good cards, yet still have a brand issue with allot of gamers, due to in the past poor drivers, a problem no longer, and in fact Nvidia of late has fumbled with drivers, yet there still is that product perception held by allot of gamers.

As for claims about the speeds, I got to laugh, so many sites with so many agendas, have produced so many results, till 'I" see one myself hooked up with drivers I can see, I aint believing to much. And more important wait to see 2nd revision anyways, first batchs of any product sucks to varying degrees.

But in all honesty, where the hell are GPU,s going anyways, I mean I have a 295gtx that runs anything and looks great in 1920x1200, and also have a new build i7 with a Asus 5870, that also does the same, cant tell the difference to be honest, both run BC2 very smoothly, end of day thats what counts.

These cards are far outstripping the software, and as for dx10 and dx11 hype, there is still so little in the pipe to justify 1000 doller price tags...Au$....

To finish up, these conversations about the cards is feeding a over priced, over powered tech hype, that applies to both companies, instead of pumping more support into software houses to actualy utilise what is already there, they keep moving on foreward creating a bigger gap between hardware and software (games)....Non gamers dont give a crap mostly and are just getting generic card X, in what ever box they are buying, and they, funny enough are the ones driving the market share figures, so as I said at the start..Flying monkey F### being given to these conversations, because your figures aint worth squat.

Oh and interesting point, ATi has been counting its product that goes into Wii consoles, but Nvidia also does the same, well used to, so market share figures and numbers are so open to who ever uses the data.

guys they are not sold out.   my business cant even get them yet  because they are not shipped to my vendors

  • drbaltazardrbaltazar Member UncommonPosts: 7,856

ati as too thing that flawed their result in the period you mention

1 fan issue ,countless customer had fan issue with ati card(my bet is its probably the oced one)but still they had issue this made customer shy away.but if customer had compared they would have seen its a lot harder to oc a nvidia card no oc on ati or nvidia means no problem .again most didnt compare apple with apple.

second biggest issue in my mind is driver update .i had an old 8800 gt one of the top card even today rarelly break.

one feature nvidia as that make buying rave about nvidia is the ease of driver instal for most card

you got a 8800 gt no problem go on their site use the autodetect feature for the nvidia chipset and graphic card

and it will update everything by itself on average the correct one (probably some error sometime but i never had one for the whole time that software was made avail

ati side:you got to uninstall manually the old driver then you got to go online search for the proper version you need for the gear you go blabla bla

thisati solution sucks!i used both and if i was a salesman selling a card i wouldnt sell an ati card not because they re not good

but because we all know driver and software make or break these card and in that front (ease of use)

nvidia is still ahead of ati

no grease monkey want to play in the heeart of their system they would rater push an online button to update automaticly one done the only thing the nvidia software say pleasse restart your computer and even then there is a clikable button option

so till ati correct a:put tougher fan

                                  b:put an auto update system

nvidia card will still sell like hot cake because of their ease of use for the noob in all of us!

This. Why buy a card that's at a premium of a 5900? A 5870 can handle anything at 1920x1200/1080; why! buy another card that's for the sake of argument 15% more powerful. Roll on future Cloud computing tech! No more paying a premium for our parts!

cloud computing is an idea but the ressource on the network makes it impractical .even if the fiber optic activated all their dormant cable they still wouldnt have the capacity to do full mmo in cloud computing

    so that idea is nil

microsoft as a solution ,might be some other version but donnybrook is the techno that will make lot of stuff possible

like massive battle 1000 vs 1000 in HD!undoable today too much lag!even aika solution works its partial solution !and they have yet to prove it can sustain 1000 vs 1000 on their very small server.

we ll see since handbitsoft is going global with this title so yes then it will be massive

we will see 1000 vs 1000 fight

but i estimate!we wont!the server of gpotato or handbitsoft couldnt handle these number

unless they are postponning because they called ibm(ccp, eve server provider)or other similar server provider

but as it stand now the server they had need to triple in capacity and capability just to survive the game popularity

nono not usa non-na deal killed it .we talk the global version here!

I agree with you both. I was holding off replacing my two Nvidia cards until I got to see how the new ones peformed. As Sabiancym said they are pretty pathectic for the asking price. Instead I chose to replace my two SLI Nividas with an ATI. And even then after looking at the performance vs price bewtween the ATI 587) and the 5850 I decided to save a decent chunk of money and just go for the 5850.

GTX 470 + GTX 480 is only 8.000 cards in total so yeah they sold out.

In contrast AMD has sold 6.000.000 HD 5000 cards to date.

All those memories will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.

You mean in contrast over the past 6 months AMD has sold. Obviously there is going to be a difference. Have any facts to back up the 6k shipped worldwide? Because was there not only 20k 5k series for launch or maybe it was 100k can't rememeber.

It's 6M actually, not 6k and you can google it or whatever.

5k series came out at September, at halfway November they reported they had sold 800k cards.

No official announcement on the 8k figure. Wrote in a way without mentioning time lines sold. Like saying WoW has 10 million subs and EQ2 has 200k but not talking about launch dates.

Obviously the volcanic ash in EU is effecting shipments too. Obviously people want the best card out, and if best means fastest than the GTX 400 series does a good job.
