Its not so much the players as the game design. Players don't need to rely on each other, therefore they don't.
in early MMO's a player who gained a bad rep by dropping group like the OP described would quickly become known and no one would group with them. While soloing was possible, it wasn't ideal for many classes (tanks/healers in particular) so they tended to behave better in PUG situations.
In WOW players don't need to group to level, they can solo to cap pretty easily so there's no real reason for civility.
Also, I think you'll find the lowest level of WOW dungeons also attracts the lowest levels of players and you'll probably find the mid level dungeons to be a bit more civil.

WoW does have nice players but it seamed towards the end they were in the minority (although you get more on a pve server than a pvp one in my experiance) . Most of the people I knew ended up leaving becasuse of it and I felt like the last man standing at the end of the day from the crowd of people I'd played the game with for several years another reason I called it quits .
I have played WoW since the begining and my personal experience is that the rude people are a tiny minority. The vast majority of WoW players just want to have fun and play the game in peace. However, the bad groups get all the publicity since noone posts on a forum how they did 20 pugs in a row and had great experiences with polite, professional players.
I really envy the guy who can do 20 pugs in a row and not have a meltdown or suffer from some ludicrous and immature/insulting behavior...I just quit WoW two weeks ago*, and I really want to play again, but I got tired of the almost constant barrage of rude people, middle-of-the-instance quitters, and generally poor behavior on the part of the general pop. I get enough stress IRL, and don't need that in my evening's entertainment. My guild was great, but it was an RP server and all they really did was RP and run an occasional instance for gancy RP gear (i.e. it looks cool), not that that mattered much...I'm one of those ultra-casuals who rarely has the time to assemble a group to do instances, so a tool like the random dungeon finder was (in theory) perfect for me....and it was, for the first few weeks it was out, until this new subculture of supreme rudeness was ushered in.
I suspect that many pugs through the random dungeon contain a disproportionate number of people who feel no loyalty or even friendliness towards other players who are not on their same server. This has in turn led to a new online variant of the infamous Ring of Gyges....and behavior in pugs that (almost) makes youtube commenters look like nice people with smart things to say.....!
I haven't played WoW for years, but at that time the players seemed to be rather civil. Really sad if the state of the players is as bad as portrait in this post. Wish you better luck in the future, although you might want to try out Vanguard, EQ2 or STO as their players seem more mature than what your dealing with here.

My rogue alt recently hit 80 and I have been running a lot of pugs with him to get him geared up. I must have run 20+ pugs (plus a 2-3 guild runs) of heroics and regular ICC 5mans with him over the last week. The worst behaviour I have encountered is three cases of someone leaving mid instance which did not cause any wipes. Thsoe people were replaced by the LFD system in a few minutes. Everyone on these runs was very professional, used decent English and was respectful of the others.
Considering my rogue was poorly geared for heroics (pre-80 blues, greens and BoA) and I still struggled with a new spec and rotation, I fully expected to be shouted at and kicked for my superlow gearscore and low DPS (1200-1600 before I got better gear) as is often described on WoW forums. I did not hear any complains, DPS meters were almost never posted and most of the runs went really smooth. The overgeared Frost Emblem speedruners were polite and did not complain that they were carrying me through the instance. In fact the worst experience was a failed HoS run where the tank was not able to control the mobs on the tribunal fight and we wiped. The healer and a DPS left that run but the fault was primarily the tank's and they did not raise a fuss or swear at him or anything.
Since the LFD came into the game I have run a ton of pugs and I have yet to encounter any significant rudeness or griefing. So I generally find the complaints about WoW 'having the worst playerbase, ever' to be gross over generalizations, fabrications or 'wishfull thinking'.
