... oh and VAX and the Data General Nova's also :-)

Phantasy Star II on the Genesis, unless you include dabbling in those bad D&D adventures in DOS back in the late 80s;) Would Adventure on the Atari count?
I know you can never got back but I really think that playing MUD's my favorite was Gemstones 3, did more for my typing skills and puzzle solving than anything else ever did. Sad to admit but I can't tell you how long it took me to figure out to look under the carpet in the house for Zork.
Wizardry on my Apple II+ and an other game on the same II+, I think it was called Moebius or something like that. It was great.
Edit: Yes that's what it was called 'Moebius: the Orb of Celestial Harmony' it was released in 1985 by Origin. Google it and look at the images, it's pretty funny.
Steve Jackson and Ian livingston's Fighting Fantasy game books got me into the whole rpg thing in the first place. As far as computer games it has to be The Bards Tale back on my Amstrad CPC 464. I loved that game so much it blew my head off. Still remember swaping beaten up cassette tapes with my school freinds with are favorite charcaters on them so we could upload them (lol that was before the word upload was even invented) on to are respective party editors. Even our school bully got in on it. He had this high level monk called "Bruce Lee" that everybody wanted in there party. He even stoped hiting us for a few weeks....that was wicked cool
I find this site interesting. The owner of the site is a Telengard fanboi. I'm betting that Telengard was the first true RPG for the micro-computer (or pc). Anyway here is the link:
Same here, plus "Lords of Midnight". I think the first-ever RPG I played on computer was the excellent "Bard's Tale" (circa 1985, as I recall??) which I played on the C64, and then later on the Atari ST and the Amiga.
I remember "Barbarian", and it was a blast at the time. I remember playing it with my very young son, and letting him thrash his dad, to his great delight. "International Karate" was another landmark game I loved.
Wow. Forgot all about Bard's Tale. I loved the third one. Also, Might and Magic, but I think that was early nineties. At least, that's when I discovered it.
My "gaming days" go back to around 1973 with a lot of paper and cardboard games of all varieties.
My computer gaming actually goes back maybe a year earlier to a game set up to run on the University of Illinois lab computer. I can't seem to recall the name at this point but it later became an Atari console game.
My first actual computer game was "Sink the Bismark" by SSG followed very shortly thereafter by Wizardry by Sir-Tech. Both of which I played on my Apple ][ computer.
I have since become a bit burned out on hack and slash fantasy games and am now gavitating more towards simulations and space combat type games (EVE Online and STO).
Am 32 now, my first rpg was" Wastelands" at a friends house on the Commodore 64. The SSI DnD games, first Pools Of Radiance, as well as the Dragonlance series. Till one of the neighborhood kids, got a nintendo then it was FF games. Considering Wastelands started it I had to get the first Fallout the week it came out. Then sense then whatever comes along if I have time I take a crack at it. Also some first edition and second edition DnD pnp games.
Hehe...me too... Was Curse of the Azure Bonds though. Actually that wasn't the first, Dragon Wars and Wastland probably were and for those that don't know, Wasteland is where Fallout began. I also started on the commodore 64. Actually I had a Vic10 too.
Getting old is mandatory...growing up is optional.
I (a 36-year old) played a plenty of text adventures written in BASIC for C64 in the '80s, but I cannot recall the titles, tbh... My first RPGs were SSI/ TSR's Dragonlace- and Forgotten Realms-sagas, then Eye of the Beholder(s), Wizardry(-ies), Bard's Tale(s), and Betrayal at Krondor as far as I can remember. in the 90s I played tabletop and PnP games, and skipped basically every PC title till Baldur's Gate came out.
Hmmm, I started with a C16 but had no RPGs on it. Later I got a 386sx16, but I think I played there mostly FS3, Golden Axe and Monkey Island 1. So one of the first RPGs I played were these:
That really made me want to play Lands of Lore again. What's the other game, though? I'm fairly sure I've played it, but possibly only as a demo. First thought was Realms of Arkania, but I looked up screenshots of that, and that's not it.
Edit: It's Might & Magic 6, isn't it? My memory is terrible.
anyone remember "the wrath of nikademus"? it was part of Phantasie series. After that came curse of the azure bonds and bards tale series for me. Another big hit for me was "mars saga" aka "mines of titan". its a shame the combat system in that game is still much better than todays junk.
for me, the one that sticks out is Ultima III Exodus, there may have been 1 or 2 others before that but this one is the one that sticks out and the only one i remember.
Ultima 4,5,6 and the bards tale series followed with 2-3 other games from a series (all on the cbm 64) and then the buck rodgers-countdown to doomsday on the amiga500+
Carnt think of any i had on the spectrum or the commadore P.E.T either (this i think was the first home computer) consoles do not count. it had a whopping 2k (or was it 2kb).
I still havent found the game that reminds me of anything that I enjoyed. I was always a fan of the PnP game Cyberpunk 2020, but after trying several MMORPGs based in a sci-fi setting and all have been a bust for me.
Neocron2 had the gritty adult feel, but just was poorly done.
Face of Mankind is a good game but no real content.
Eve is just a space shooter to me.
I wont even go into Star Trek online, The Matrix Online, or SWG.
Zelda on the atari 2600 and this game snafu on the Intellivision. Funny how life works sometimes, I owned a console then and now that I am older I still own a console. Just goes to show some things never change.
my first rpg was Dragonstomper on my Atari 2600 back in 1987...now I feel old. When I say "I've been playing games longer than most of you have been alive" I guess it's true
Edit: I wonder if it still works. I miss playing Joust. If I make it out of the attic I'll brb :P

I have "Joust" on my PS3. Its a cheap "Activition" gamepack with all the old games, Paper Boy, Joust, and a few others.

Seems you have not read this thread... A lot of 40+ people here and lots of people that have played since before the Atari. I started with arcade games in 1973, my first console 1975, and I do not come in here and brag like I am the oldest one in the group... Neither should you.
"This is not a game to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force"
While in another thread today, I started wondering what RPGs the older gamers played that got them into the genre.
What really got me was The Final Fantasy Legend on the original Gameboy in 1990. Id played a few others on the NES, but i still consider The Final Fantasy Legend to be my "first" if you will
Okay...so the game that really got me into RPG's was really not an RPG. Crystalis for NES. I remember trying to get to sleep one night but I kept seeing the flicker of the tv under my door from the living room. I crept out of my room to find my father sitting in a completely dark room except for the television. He didn't even notice me sit down on the couch behind him. We were there until morning.
First MMO was everquest. It's funny that I was hooked on the day they opened the servers. 90% of us spent every hour falling through the world, only to get that 30min of actual play time. That half hour though made it all worth while. I remember the first time we saw a giant in game. My roomate and I froze and looked at each other..."What the hell is that, man?"
Comments
40+ here.
My first real games were on an Apple IIe -- Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Leather Goddesses of Phobos, and Amnesia. It's a blur after that.
RIP PDP11, long live the PDP!
... oh and VAX and the Data General Nova's also :-)

Let's party like it is 1863!
An old Zelda offspin, The Adventures of Link, on the old NES
Our spirit was here long before you
Long before us
And long will it be after your pride brings you to your end

So much crap, so little quality.

Dune (the adventure/strategy game not the RTS), Warcraft I, Mechwarrior, and Ultima mostly.
My dad introduced me to Hellfire Warrior on the Atari 800 in 1982. I was 8 years old! Ironically, he was the same age then that I am now - 35.
Here's a link:

Other influences were:
Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior on NES late 80s/early 90s
The classic Bard's Tale, Ultima and a really obscure title, "Questron" on Commodore 128 during the summer of 1988 & 1989
Wizardy (can't remember which one) on a 386 PC in 1993
