The best PvP I have encountered so far is in EVE, in this universe many zerg alliances are competing against each other. These zerg alliances are made up of multiple independent corporations and use trade agreements or rent out space to neutrals, miners or mission runners. What AoC simply lacks is a large population so that multiple zerg alliance can exist in the Age of Conan world.  Yes players tend to flock to large guilds, but often leadership and organization determine if players will stay so it is a numbers game, but in this case the servers and the size of the world in AoC (and other MMO's) are simply too small to start a real open PvP world. You need more battlegrounds and resources to fight over, not one which can be dominated easily.

Thanks to the OP for a great post, I almost fell on the floor laughing when I saw  the Snow White scene

...hi ho hi ho it's off to PvP we go...

with a shovel and a pick and a deft mouse click....hi ho hi ho hi ho

LOL at least FC is trying some new stuff, think this would have proved more entertaining for PvE oriented craftersmyself but whatever.

    I miss DAoC

    yea, exactly.

On my server currently ( Cimmeria )  aside from the active siege battles, the Shrines of Bori have already started its Monopoly process.

Smaller guilds, pve focused guilds ,rp guilds are feeling the pinch when it comes to holding on to their pvp supporting players, as they get fed up with not being able to participate in their roles ( both Shrines, minis, and pvp in general)  and eventually migrate to the super guilds that not only cater to their playstyle, but also gives the least resistance when getting what they want.

Excluding names, two to five days ago, there is a large hemmorgaging of players seperating from one guild, or super guild rather because their playstyle no longer coexist with theirs.  before the Shrines,  there was a larger base of  pvpers, pvers and rpers coexisting under multiple guilds,  now.. after Shrines, Segregation is all over the place.

seperation and a guild focusing on one specific role isnt a bad thing, what is bad is that while this is happening, the numbers and population hurting, let alone feeling it.

So when a pve guild or rper guild wish to try their hand in abit of pvp these days,  8/10 times they get destroyed.

    why?

like you said in your paragraph Pinda500 about more battlefields,  when it comes to Shrines THERE IS ONLY ONE (BK CE).  with that only shrines battle field, it is locked down, the moment anyone steps foot thats no in one of the big super guilds are fresh meat -- unless they come to Bori for the SOLE purpose of harrasing and vulturing miners, they are free kills waiting to happen for the  already large super pvp guilds.

    now, with that said

non pvp guilds not only get destroyed, but also discoruaged and driven off back to what ever they are comfortable with, In Minis it has become a tradition when certain groups see a premade of specific pvp guild(s), they simply leave the match.

to add a second element to the problem

The Hi-Ho-Hi-Ho-Snow White grinding:  The tokens

this also is a large blockade that will soon seperates who has been getting their pvp T2 gear, and who has not.  It screams Atrition and other problems , which i wont go into since they have been said multiple times before me.

I have to comment though, resource gathering is thrown into the mix to encourage conflict. The areas where you gather resources are deemed open PvP (or world PvP) with looting. However, resource gathering is not new. It's always been there to encourage players to utilize another area in order to stir stuff up -- battle for power and resource.

Yes, you can argue that resource gathering in itself is not including any element of PvP. You can say that about basically any element of any system, like capture the flag or territory control (you know where you wait in a spot to claim a zone). Yet, there is one thing that a lot of people seem to forget. PvP does not translate into "player killing". When you capture resources or control a region, it's not player killing in order to accomplish those tasks. You  however may have killed a few players here and there on the way up to victory, but the overall competitiveness of the system is PvP even if it included no physical death-dealings of players.

Shrines encourages player conflict and both resource control and player killing. Both of these are forms of competitive gameplay versus human players and both of these systems work hand-and-hand together to encourage conflict. Resource gathering supports the primary system or element -- player killing; much like PvE gameplay supports world PvP.

    Cheers!

The sad fact is that AoC could have been an incredible PvP game, but your companies management decisions destroyed that opportunity when you created a murder system and removed open PvP.   We told you all the way back then how many players would leave and how abused the system would become and those of us telling you that were proven correct.   I loved AO and strongly supported AoC from beta to release, but Funcom blew it, at least for the majority of the PvP crowd.

It's Funcom's game, so best of luck.   I have to share my opinion that not allowing a section on your forum for non-subscribers is disgraceful and suggests Funcom prefers to remain blind to what constructive criticism and comments may occur from those who might actually play the game again if they saw certain changes.

It's obvious the management of AoC is not PvP-centric, and the only reason in this case it's a shame, is because AoC has every thing necessary for an awesome PvP experience.    Instead of getting the attention and game content changes to enhance what was a pretty good PvP experiene to start with, Funcom went in reverse, didn't add/improve PvP content, but instead introduced a new PvP rule system that gave those seriously interested in PvP a sad, but obvious choice.    I don't have to tell you when most of the subscriptions terminated though; look back in your game billing logs and you will find it coincides with the announced direction Funcom was moving the game a few months after release.

    Good luck -CC

This is what I posted on the official forums.

    On this thread :

    http://forums-eu.ageofconan.com/showthread.php?t=145043&page=36

I think it fits in this topic. I have played in Bori for many hours each day since it hit live. I have played alone, in small groups, in huge zergs.

I have PvPed there, I have ganked, I have fought long battles, and I have also spent hours upon hours just farming the nodes and running to the shrines.

Funcom, after extensively participating in your new PvP content (and I do mean extensively), here is my personal comment which I guess you won't care about :

    This content sucks.

And it sucks because it rewards situations when there is no PvP and punishes situations when there is PvP.

So basically, the less PvP there is in the zone, the more tokens will be distributed to the participants (on empty servers, at 6 am, or whenever there is no opposition).

In the end, you will get a bunch of noobs who hardly ever did a fight because they farm when zone is safe and get mini tokens without fighting also since all enemies go afk or leave @ pvp 10 with all the gear.

If I was to rate this content, I'd give it a 3/10, and you get 3 points only because your intentions were clearly good, since you stated many times that this was intended for small group pvp.

But intentions are not good enough, and you are not my friends, you are professionals who do this for a living, so I have no reason to "pity" your meager attempts at installing a good PvP system.

    It's a huge failure.

I'd say its an excellent move because  of the statements made in the post linked.

ya and the worst thing is, even though it's a crazy grind for dominating guilds (and an impossible ones for others) I heard the gear coming out in the expansion will be better :S
