Sorta seems like a non-issue in my opinion. I will echo some people's comments that this is done in EvE and the impact is really minimal from my point of view. I believe it was also done in SWG, but it's been too long for me to recall with any sort of authority on that.
Really, people will abuse any name system whether it allows similarities or not. In the end, you are left with more options instead of more restrictions and that is where I believe games should be headed anyhow
As a side note, it would be nice if they allowed wild cards. Imagine it " /ignore Sephiroth* "

I like it IF they can work out a system where you can send a tell using only the first name.
Well there are many ways this can be done.. either you open a chat window for those tells.. fairly simple, but could be annoying depending on where it pops up.
also /r should work well so you only have to write the full name once.. Though writing the full name should be easier than it is now... since you wont have to take their obscure spelling of LEhehgogolasssz into account.
But I guess it depends if the names are counted as 1 word with a space in the middle or as 2 words.. Current ingame chat systems dont like the 2 word solution.. atleast not without unique first names.
And there is also the question of in game marriages.. dunno if it will be part of this game, but if it is, then you would have to go with the 2 word sollution... But GMs would ofcourse have to check if you husbands sister had the same first name as you.. In that case they should make your husband take your last name.. or if that was taken too you could maybe get a double barrelled last name.. or a completly new one.

I also think that having two names causes more problems than it's worth.
Harassment: Whether as a joke or for malicious purposes, you can make a character that is identical to some prominent guild leader or something, and run around with exactly the same first name... just with a slightly different (or mocking) last name. The things you say or do can then give that person a bad reputation to anyone who doesn't notice the difference. This can already happen with a one-name system but it is even easier to make the mistake when the first name is the same — most people only pay attention to first names.
"Phrase" names: This is a huge pet peeve for me, even if it doesn't bother others as much. Tell someone to pick a first and last name for their character and they are much more inclined to make it a disguised phrase such as Ivana Gethigh, Robin Yublind, Whyso Sirius, etc. Yes, this is again possible with a one-name system but allowing two names is practically a written invitation to do it. Unless S-E enforces a very strict naming policy (and I'm not holding my breath... EverQuest was the last game to disallow this AFAIK), the world's going to be full of them.
Confusion: As I said above, people mostly only pay attention to first names. If it's more than one syllable, you probably don't even use the full first name when you don't have to. Ever been in a guild where two people had similar names, so you couldn't abbreviate Disdena to Dis anymore, or Darkexodus to Dark? Mild annoyance but not game-breaking. Now in some groups/guilds, you'll have to disambiguate even further than spelling out the whole first name. Again, not game-breaking but one more reason why I'm giving it a thumbs-down.
I dont know about this multiple players witth same name idea. its like you say, there will prolly be alot of the same popular names around, could you imagine if they had this in wow (or any other game with elfs really), half the people in the Nelf starting area would be named legolas or some shit.
All the cool and popular names will be overused like hell, and if you have a unique awesome nick on your server, im sure shit ton of people will steal it aswell..

We’re working on a way to use the /tell private message command without having to type the full name each time.
If they can't come up with such a system are most of you fine with typing /tell then both the first and last name? It seems like a pain in the butt to me. Other games with two name systems only needed you to type the first name. Well, hopefully they can find a way around this problem.
I'm cool with it.
My typings fast enough that most secretary type jobs would hire me in a heartbeat. Plus, after awhile, even something like typing /tell X--- Y---- for a friend should become backseat thinking after a couple months of play. It's not that inconvenient.
I understand your post Kupo. I put myself on both sides here because I like and dislike the having a last name. In FFXI I got tired of seeing Cloud, Cloudx and so on. Know you will see a ton of Cloud (last name). I also I don't want to /t someone with a ridiculously long name. On the other hand I like having the last name because I can put 2 of my top first names I was gonna use together and also my family members that are playing we can use the same last name and be a tribe.(We have the same last name in RL so why not in the game.
I understand Kupo about feeling original with your name and that's why I have a name with a very low chance of someone using unless they see me. Someone besides my family will probably have the last name I plan to use but I don't mind because its a kick ass last name. Before you ask, I'm not gonna tell you the names I'm gonna use.
I would like the last names to be tied to an account or group of accounts. So me and my wife can have the same last name, but others outside of our group can not. This will allow more name choices, but try to keep people from cashing in on others names.

Names were never a problem unitl the name of the character became the only form of identification, in games like EQ et. al., which is an astonishingly outdated concept.
It annoys me when the names I try to use are taken and then no one is actually using the name in game or they're just level 1. I'm pretty convinced a lot of people fill up their character slots taking names they may one day use and to be honest this is really is pretty stupid.
The idea of multiple names worked pretty well in Tabula Rasa except ages was spent looking for a Surname that wasn't taken instead.
To be honest I'd prefer a very small limit on character slots or a rule such as a new character slot every X hours played to stop people just name hogging. But if by allowing first name duplicates they stop the name-hogs then I'm all for it.

Yeah, you're right. Simple but effective. The solution in FFXI worked well.
I'm all for this. I am smart enough not to preorder MMOs, and smart enough to wait for a trial before even playing it. However people go nuts and make a bunch of characters and use up all the names. The worst is when you can't use the name you want and when you do searches for the person..... that character is never played. It's on some account of some shmuck who preordered and realized he hated the game 2 weeks later so it just sits there unused but taken up.
So i can be Sephiroth Smith....sweet what I've always wanted.

But if you only have 1 word names, you end up with impossible to remember names like Llenoflynyard and.... well lets face it I could start making up impossible names that noone would never want to use, except they had to cause every name they try is already picked.
Confusion: As I said above, people mostly only pay attention to first names. If it's more than one syllable, you probably don't even use the full first name when you don't have to. Heh yeah Darkexodus.. What was your second point about phrases in names. Besides loads of people pick names that stard with Blood, Dark, Rogue, Star, Malicious and all sorts of common words... However would you save valuable typing time or breath if you had a Darkexodus and a Darkblood.. you would call them Exe and Paul or whatever.. might even call one of them Dark cause you knew him first.
One major difference between games and how we normally act is that in games we get more of a say in how we want to be known to others.
I mean my mothers name isnt Mom.. Its just what I call her, and what I look for on my phone when I want to call her.
Its a little bit different with a bunch of friends of mine that all have the same name.. we might call them by their real name if we can be sure who we are talking about or to.. But we might as well, or in case 2 or more of them are in the same room, call them by their last names or nick names... We would especially use nick names in the cases where they have the exact same name... I know atleast 3 pairs of people that have the exact same first and last name...
But on the other hand to get a legal name change in a game is often harder than it is in real life..
I guess the solution would be to change part of the chat system in games to be more like instant messenging. So everyone could pick their name from the start, but others could give them nicknames that made more sense to them, and that didnt force them to write the full name every time they wanted to send a message.
Also you could have a system for guild titles that worked in some ways as names.. so the social guild officer could grant titles to the members that could then be used in the various search functions to find players within the guild and coud be used for sending messages or items.
Also.... Im not SgtFrog... I just decided to use green too. But I had better make that clear cause it seems people posting here are easily confused about identities.
Its pretty easy to filter out all the clouds... Just like a language filter, dont allow the string 'Cloud' or "Sephiroth' or other main characters in their names.
I also think that having two names causes more problems than it's worth.
