It has the following two features:

1.  You can use your custom designs out in the open for combat and other things AND clever designing is rewarded*.

2.  You can have multiple designs that interlock (Voltron).

*So two designs using roughly the same parts could perform quite differently depending on how those parts were put together.

Those two together would be total win.

That said, my impression is that most/all designs are for particular gameworld functions (bridges, rocket ship, etc) and none are used for combat.  I'm pretty sure no merging designs will be around at release too.  Still, I'm keeping on eye on this in case I am wrong, but my next MMO will probably be TOR (or maybe FFXIV).  Oh well.

Well, that would definitely be extremely hard to do, I think. If you used your creation as a weapon then you would have to have some way to say where the handle is, it's damage, range, etc. It would be cool if there could be an easy system for that but it would most likely get too complicated for the younger audiences.

Yes, little kids are too stupid for this stuff.  Actually, they aren't.  Kids can handle gaming complexities pretty well.  The idea you have to make things ridiculously simple for little kids is what is going to make me NOT buy this game.  The creativity is purely cosmetic in nature.

Well, it wouldn't just be complex for the players. The mechanics would be hard to work out for the creators  because there are MANY different items and some function very differently. One item might Provide invincibility for a certain time, or another may be equipped with other items for a special bonus. Since the game is going to be released in October, and I haven't seen or heard anything like it being even mentioned by NetDevil, that kind of thing most likely will not be added to the game.

So, considering this is LEGO and all - is there going to be a cash shop where you need to buy pieces?

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

Well, I can't actually tell you for sure. There's something similar...

Obviously.  It would require some sort of physics engine, with each piece having certain properties.

Yes, which would most likely be hard to add on to the game from scratch so it will most likely not exist within LU

This MMO is definately a sleeper.  It looked pretty cool at E3, but was of course over shadowed by SWTOR.  I think Lego has a lot to offer and will be a big hit.  If SWTOR so much as hiccups Lego will run right past it before they know what hit them.

I've never been huge into the Lego games, but I got to admit that this game looks very impressive.  I think this game has a lot to offer and the fact that it is LEGO makes it easy to create new, original story lines.  With this game and SWTOR coming out the MMO genre just got a lot better.  Don't sleep on LEGO Universe; I think this will be a shocker for us all.

If they wanted to get grown-ups play this game, they'd get rid of the Lego looks.....  so imagine you get the lefo blocks from dissasembing something. And when assembling something new while the assembling process is busy you still see Lego blocks and when done it turns intoo normal graphics.

This espescially goes for the character models.

It seems to me that the gameplay of this game could be fun (but very linear) but that it will not give me the needed immersion i need from a true mmo.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

Don't worry, not a lot of the game is lego models. A lot of the things there are are semi-lego semi-graphics. Before I started playing, I wondered whether or not everything would be lego and if it would truly be Lego Universe without everything being lego.  The designers make lego work great with graphics and make everything look really nice.

I'd argue this is a major detraction.  If it was all lego blocks (with various levels of stickiness), then you'd actually have an extremely interactive world that would have tremendous potential.  Instead we're just getting lego stuff at fixed points where your creativity can only modify how something looks, but not how it works (e.g. purely cosmetic).  Beyond that only death animation is lego-like (well, and the rough graphical style).

Eh, maybe they'll eventually make a Technic game.  I want open-ended building.

Agreed. It's a viscious circle. Most developers assume kids are too stupid to know they are being fed shite and in the process are harvesting idiots because manure seems to be the only thing on most mmo menus.  If they made smart games then smart people..kids included.... will play them. Like attracts like..as above, so below...etc.

Most of what you want is in the planned release.  Sign up for the beta and you'll already get a taste of modular building.

All the demos and vids I have seen have show that building happens at special nodes (I don't know what the game term is).  Each node is for a particular kind of object that performs a particular task, and there's not much room for variation in it beyond perhaps how high a structure is.  All rockets, bridges, etc, perform the same and designs are only cosmetic.

If this isn't the case, could you give me a counter-example or three?

Well, there is one more feature which allows you to add behaviors yo your models. You can choose an activation button, and then make it turn right, left, up, down, follow you, run away from you, wait, destroy itself,  rebuild itself, and more.  But, I guess you can't really use them while playing except to show them off to friends.

You can build freely in free build mode and on your property which can then be sent to the lego store for purchase just like digital designer.  The LDD api is used as the build tool.  Bridges and static rebuild objects are called quick builds just like the console games.  rockets and karts etc are called choice builds or modular builds.  eventually you'll be able create your own modules.
