Wasnt it the Sandbox system that made the original SWG mmo game great.
But ToR is Theme Park with a companion npc system like Guild Wars.
So whats the big point about SW:TOR?
Whats great that its doing that the original game didnt try to do with its major update?
Wasnt it the Gameplay and not the IP that held the SWG game up? Well how you think ToR will fair?
Can somebody explain the improvments ToR will have over the original Sandbox SWG?

It will be more like Dragon Age Origins than SWG.

SW TOR is still one full year away so speculating at the time being is futile. However, you can take a look at this developer post: http://www.swtor.com/news/blog/20100402_001 .
They are walking the middle path between sandbox and themepark. The dev also gives some info about how they are planning to approach the solo vs grouped play issue as well as the crafting.
The whole project looks like an enormous task. Will Bioware pull this through? At this point no one can nor should claim that he knows for sure. My opinion is that they will and TOR will be a very succesful MMO.
As in Theme Park?
Whats big deal about that?
Wasnt it the Sandbox feature that made SWG the great game that it was. NOT THE IP.
TOR is Theme Park. So whats the Big Deal?

It is a Bioware
It is Star Wars
EA hyping it up
If you're in the minority who think the sandbox-themepark axis is perfectly parallel to the good-bad axis (and it seems you are), then no, SW:TOR probably is not a big deal for you.
Most people are more interested in the question "will this be a good game?" though, rather than "will this be sandboxy enough to satisfy my manly manliness, or will people laugh at me if I play it because it has questgivers?"
STILL ITS THEME PARK with NPC COMPANION SYSTEM LIKE GW
SWG was made great from the Sandbox elements.
NOT THE IP.
How many times does this have to be pointed out.
STO doesnt do well because of IP.
SWG didnt do well after the gameplay revamp even with the high rating IP.
So why is SW:TOR geting this kind of hype over the IP again, when its another theme park clone?
Iam surprised people arent bashing Bioware to make the game more Sandbox instead of another stuid themepark clone

No big deal at all.
The IP doesn't even matter to me, since it's TOR, not the era covered by the movies.
Quite possibly NO space combat. Quite possibly a cash shop in place as well.
Add that to the focus on story and solo play, and it sounds like a dog, to me.

Ummm... Speculating is futile? The game has been in development for over 2 years now, they've released a boat load of information on clases, systems, planets, coding, etc.
Isn't this exactly when we would be speculating? Before the product is put out there for all to tear apart.
I say, speculate the heck away!
On topic though, I don't really think you'll be able to look at KNOTRO as great, if it is great that is, in the same type of way you thought of SWG as being great. They will be two different types of games for sure; I'm pretty sure Bioware has absolutely zero interest in created any sort of artificial sandbox environment.
Important Information regarding Posting and You
What made SWG great as well as terrible was that is was almost pure sandbox. SWG lacked focus, rules, and structure to keep the sandbox from getting out of control. Allowing people to "macrobot" was horrendously STUPID. PvP lacked any control, it was almost a open world gankfest. Skill tiers were completely unbalanced, especially in crafting. The whole Jedi chase thing was simple EPIC fail. BUG's galore.. Player housing should have been controlled better, same with harvesters.
SWG could of been salvaged easily if the devs just took off their "we're godz" hat and listened to the people. I started SWG on Day 1 (yes, I was one of the lucky ones with a great ISP) and over the months of playing and keeping up with the constant changes, I finally just had enough of it.. I felt as if the devs were forcing me to play a open world PvP game of Empire Vs Rebel. There was a HUGE market, infact probably MAJORITY of the customer base that wanted more PvE then PvP, but we were ignored.. I had quit after CU, but before NGE..
RIP SWG Pre-NGE
As for ToR tho? I sense it will be Dragon Age on steroids with a Star Wars skin.. most everything will be map driven, instancing. I just hope it doesn't turn out as bad as STO did..

Well, it was great for a niche of players that wanted a game with sandbox features, and even then it had a lot of missing or broken features, like PvP.
The developers are spending well over 100 million dollars developing TOR. They cannot come close to breaking even if they cater to this same niche.
So the developers are concentrating on making a great game, not a great sandbox game for a small niche of players.
