Have to agree with you there. Maybe if they wrote more interesting articles, we'd have more to respond to!

Just like all the MMORPG's out there atm, same 'ol grind :P

A reply is a reply... sometimes something is so absurd(to the poster) it doesnt deserve anything more than a "bullsh*t" or a "how stupid" or "Pleeeeease!"...

Or, the post was so in lock step with the readers point of view all thats needed is a "spot on" or "Exactly" although Wood is within his right to complain about his peeve's, one of my peeves is folks like Wood who feel its necessary to tell others how things should be done... be it the "spellcheckers" or "gammerhounds" or in this case the "formatwonks" ...

Its freestyle, its a thread... all it needs to convey is the opinion of the poster... not the desires of the reader...

Fail. Epic. Sucks. All pretty obvious as to what the poster is trying to say. Sure there are plenty of posts like 'This game is the worst ever'. Okay...Why?!? No one knows. That type of comment conveys...something...and can help people casually browsing for game opinions but really could be a bit more specific.

This game is the worst ever.

    The graphics fail.

    The community is lacking

    The sound sucks

    Etc.

That said, plenty of one-liners and even one-worders do the job of describing the posters opinion/feelings. Hardly worthless posts. My opinion is that there are complete worthless 'developed' posts and there are worthless one-liners but in no way shape or form can any one group be labeled 'worthless' across the board.

I think we can all generally agree that there is a lot of truth in this article and it's more of a reminder for all of us to perhaps chill out a little when expressing our opinions on forums. Perhaps not being so defensive and aggressive with our replies. Reading that kind of stuff just wears a person out after a while.

With that said, I think it's ironic how many of the comments to this article are so defensive; I think it goes a long way to proving Jon's point.

My pet peeve- "meh" is not a word.  If you don't have anything to say, then don't post, but "meh" says "I'm too apathetic to even bother with vocabulary."  If you can't even form a sentence, then roll away from the computer.

That is actually debatable. While more often considered a neologism, "meh" was included In November 2008 in the Collins English dictionary, published by HarperCollins. It is also listed in many urban dictionaries. Besides, one of "meh's" common definitions is an expression of apathy, so using it would be consistent with saying "i'm too apathetic."

Different dictionaries have different thresholds for how long a word has to have  been in use, before they choose to accept it as a genuine new lexical item. This time-frame also helps weed out faddish new coinages that have a rapid boom in use before falling into obsolescence.

"Meh" as Amathe said is already in the Collins, is on its way to the OED and Merriam Webster, precisely because it has stood the test of time and use, and because it's a useful new coinage, it's almost an onomatopoeic snapshot of the feeling of apathy/lack of interest in a concept it denotes.

Also, languages are mutable beasts, if people are actively using a word (without having to parenthetically explain what it means), well then to all intents and purposes it is a word, dictionary listing or not.

One thing they teach you when you study linguistics is not to get all bent out of shape about languages changing, because it's what they do...

I agree that there is a lot of truth in this article, from the viewpoint of Jon Wood. The problem with that is I don't remember when I decided to live my life by making sure every thought I expressed, met the exacting standards of Jon wood. Or anyone one else for that matter. Sorry Jon. I thought long and hard on this article and I have come to the conclusion that you can stuff it.

Unless a poster actually breaks the set rules of the forum such as personal attacks, or racism, or what have you, you need to suck it up and let them talk. Or, you need to start posting articles with the comments section removed. While I do feel you wrote this article with no malice and the best intentions in mind, asking someone to be silent because you feel their expression has no worth, or reshape their thoughts to suit your standards, is just another form of censorship.

If when I come post on this site I have to stop and rethink what I'm typing for fear it might not meet with your intangible idea of worth, I might as well just never post anything in the first place. I ask you Jon, considering what you do for a living, writing articles and gleaning responses from them, what is the worst thing you could have to put up with? Nonsensical and sometimes annoying replies, or complete silence? Its your choice.

Sorry Jon Wood, but you come off sounding as though you are too lazy to scroll through a forum (god forbid you ever have to do REAL physical labor) and want everyone to just stfu, except those involved - in some manner - with developing games.

As others have suggested - this article FAILS.

Forums are NOT for the developers and their boot-lickers.

A message board or forum for users of a product should be used to get the gut reaction of the user. Lord know that it's difficult to do so if they KNOW they are being queried. THAT'S when the opinions become slanted.

As someone who has worked in marketing research before I can tell you that these, and ANY product forum where users speak their minds, is a goldmine.

This is where the marketing people dig to come up with overall impressions of the product - favorable or not - and gear further marketing queries and campaigns accordingly.

Apparently MMORPG has NO IDEA what this is worth or you would be inviting more discussion and charging marketing companies and divisions to troll through the user opinion.

On the odd chance that this drek is from a marketing concern who doesn't want to wade through it all, tell THEM to stfu and get to work to earn that high pay.
