Plenty still play, so its nowhere near doom. So either they have a hell or a lot of lifers or somone is just BS'ing.
The game has never had more than 200,000 subscribers, it most likely has under 100,000 now. In a year there will be nobody left but lifetime subscribers the way things are going now.
OP ...I agree ..Sad issue this? If the game had more content and was actually a MMO I would be willing to overlook the C-Store but they already have so little in the game and still try to sell emote pack's ?
This is either a act of desperation as they are running out of content to sell or just another cash grab before the toilet gets flushed!
.... @ Nick ...
Nice to see you here..the STO Forums must be quite now that everyone has left ... except the CDF which is probably the Player Council and there friends...
Cryptic has the gall to charge for frickin emotes, and to absolutely no one's surprise, the CDF defends this. Is there nothing Cryptic does these people won't defend? Do F2P games even charge for emotes? Cryptic can't fail fast enough.
Almost every F2P game I have played charge for emotes. And you usually don't get to keep them forever either.
Plenty still play, so its nowhere near doom. So either they have a hell or a lot of lifers or somone is just BS'ing.

There is a hell of a lot MMOs with less that 200,000 subscripers. Even many with less than 100,000, which have been running for years and still financially viable. If I recall EVE Online survived on 30k for years, now its ten times that. So even when things look bad, they can turn around.
This site is obsessed with numbers. They don't make a successful MMO, one being in profit does. Subscriptions numbers simply represent popilarity. To those playing they couldn't care less how popular it is, providing their's enough people around them. Currently in STO there certainly is and from zone chat you can also tell people are still purchasing, given the questions. At the moment it seems to be stabilised, with leaver and new joiners, as any MMO.
"Most likely" is an opiton, based on zero facts. One only needs to be at starbase-1 to see there's the same number of instances since launch, with a 30-40% drop off in the number of people in each. A rate that is typical for any new MMO.
Plenty still play, so its nowhere near doom. So either they have a hell or a lot of lifers or somone is just BS'ing.
When they did the forum name color change for lifers, there were a LOT more lifers than I ever expected on the forums. That's only the people who post on the forums so I imagine the actual number would surprise people if it was ever released. I started in OB and the regular posters who were not LTS have pretty much disappeared.
For one lifers aren't the only ones posting. There's plenty of posts from those paying monthly.
You also need to remember for any MMO the vast majority of players don't vist forums. Only those with a vested interest. Its quite naturual that a resonable proportion of them would be the lifers.

All well and good except for the fact that STO is a subscription based game not a F2P. F2P is probably in the cards for STO due to the huge drop off in players but for now it is still a monthly sub fee.
And to any new people looking at the game to try. Read the reviews and read the official STO forums people are universally against the game and vocal about it from the reviewers to the players. Their are a few who will defend the game and say everything is roses but all i say to counter them all i say is read the reviews and watch the main STO forums themselves and you will see that this game is heading in a direction you probably do not want to go.

There hasn't been a huge drop off, there's been the typical drop off and turn over within the few months of a typical MMO.
The STO forums aren't against the game either. Yeah, there's some, but most are suggestions for improvement, wish list or just general discussions. Big difference.
Can't argue over the reviews though, although they were mostly based on the first 10 levels, which are a terrible borefest.

Which reviews claimed they only played the first ten levels? I never saw any or is that just your assumption?

Funny thing is you right .... but ... You also are speculating about the 30-40% drop off. I dont agree about ingame numbers still holding up!
Take a walk through the forums (At least thoughs post which have not been deleted) and you will find alot of players struggleing to find fleet mates to do end game content. Further more many people have lost many fleet players in the span of a month.
I dont dout new players are comming in.... but you always find the same post's on the offical forums ...but just with different players making the complaints ...which end in a "I Quit" or a "I am unhappy" tone!
The reality is that this game is shedding subscriptions fast and i am shore in the next month the 90 days of playtime that many subscribers got with there pre orders will expire. Once that starts to shine through we will know abit more about how things are holding up!
i am glad your instance is Full.... so enjoy ..and i hope your not a life... !

Yeah.. there isn't a drop off in numbers.. All those inactive captains on the database are just illusions, and the cliff drop on Xfire is a bug, and the huge drop off on "this game sux" post on the official forums are now happy customers because of Season 1.. All is well in STO.. I cant' wait for the quest that requires you to follow the rabit down the hole to meet the Queen

No they aren't down, I'm just not an obsessive MMO player that needs to be on them all the time. I did misread though, for which I appologise.

That is not what I said. I said there had been a drop off, but by a typical amount that any new MMO has within the first few months of launch. That being between 30 to 40%.
MMOs then typically stabilise. Some then start seeing an improvement in numbers as more content is added, etc. Others remain at the same level for years. With the rare occurence that numbers continuing to drop, so that a game isn't finiancially viable.
The X-fire issue is actually bug, which is known. X-fire also means jack, as its has a steriotypical user. If it were used as fact, just about every MMO is a complete disaster.
No, there's no fixed number of instances and they are spread out all over the place. Many can't be seen either, other than by the people in them (i.e. missions).
Not going to argue with anyone directly on here because that makes no sense. BUT
I urge all fellow gamers to do their homework on this game check out the official STO forums, MMORPG, VN and every other gamer site and read the player comments. Then read the reviews and make your own decision.

I note you're being positive and props for that but you do seem to be ignoring many things that you ought to take into consideration. Yes, it is only speculation about the number of subscribers but it is a pretty educated guess and should be given due respect as there is plenty of clues to give an idea of trends.
My guess is that we won't see Cryptic claiming numbers because they'll actually be less than 100k. I think if it was better than 100k they would still be crowing about it on the forums and in interviews. They've been notably quiet about numbers lately other than a vague reassurance that everything is OK.
I think the numbers will settle down in May when the 90 day pre-order boxes have ended their time. Then after that, it will be interesting to see if Cryptic are willing to say anything about numbers. I am gonna guess the numbers will be 40-50k which perhaps won't be bad but could have been higher if the game went live in a better state and had kept more customers.
I've not been disputing numbers, just the doom and gloom. STO most definitly needs work, but its not failing.
For the record, Cryptic are always quiet about numbers. They never give them. Neither do their games generally attract the masses. There's no harm in being niche though.

It is really futile to talk to someone who decides not to listen and see black and white only...
He was not denying a trend, he just pointed out that the conclusions presented here such as those based on the trend are mostly exaggerated and baseless.

The doom and gloom may be less thant it was and that is because the vocal players have quit. There are still occassional postings about the end level content still being crap i.e. the STFs. Cryptic did keep going on about 100,000 subscribers for quite a period but are silent now - that in turn causes further speculation.
Not giving numbers is usually caused by having nothing left to boast about, which is probably likely now. I'm pretty sure if the numbers were high and getting higher in either STO or CO, you can bet your dollar there would be anything but silence.

Each instance can take 50 players?
