I am not a fanboy of any MMO, in fact I think they all suck right now, but people need to stop say that SWTOR is going to be the best MMO ever because they have released a few videos and articles and you like what you see. Bioware has a great track record with RPG games but MMO are a completely different beast whether or not thier experiance can translate over to an MMO remains to be seen.
Just playing devil's advocate here, but the same could have been said about Blizzard less than 6 years ago. Blizzard knew strategy games, and RPGs, but WoW was their first MMO. So never under estimate a company with a large following, and indeed Bioware has that, just like Blizzard did. Then you also have to add the fans of SWG and the SW IP to that. If they do it RIGHT....I think it has a fine chance of being able to be "the next big thing." Only time will tell, but....we probably shouldn't under estimate their potential.
He doesnt underestimate their potential. I dont know where you read that, but all I read is that it remains to be seen if they can live up to their expectations. Thats just healthy sceptism.
The fact that Blizzard made a succes out of their first MMO doesnt mean anything. Bioware is a different company,so you cant tell yet if SW:TOR will be a succes or not.

But Diablo 2 was a closed-server persistent multiplayer dungeon crawling loot ladder. D2 is more similar to an MMO than anything Bioware has done, and most importantly D2 demonstrated staying power, millions of players grinding dungeons for years to get purple loot.
Reading a number of posts in and out of this forum I cannot help but notice how scared the fanboys of WoW are at the upcoming launch of SW:TOR. I will give you people credit where credit is due. You were able to make the World of Warcraft the number one subscription based game around the world. No doubt about it. If Smedly hadn't screwed up SW:Galaxies since its launch I doubt that you would own the number one position by yourself for the last few years. In the limited amount of time you have in 2010 go ahead and do your best to overplay your hand. I cannot wait till the launch of SW:TOR next year. Galaxies veterans will leave WoW dropping its servers to low population status. Not that a number of their servers do not already say low 24/7. The nail on the coffin will be a few years after that when WoW has to start eliminating low servers due to those low populations. The World of Warcraft will be relegated to second class status and will never be heard of again in the popular culture. The popularity of the Clone Wars cartoon is proof that millions of people are still drawn to the Star Wars lore. See you on the dark side in Spring 2011 fanboys.
I'm going to bite the bait here...
I remember months before WAR came out, the same WAR fans said the same crap - "I can't wait until WAR came out and WoW's server population drop to low status...blah blah blah"
WoW pretty much won that one blindfolded.
In about ... 7 months, WoW will be 6 years old. That's right, 6 years old. And it is still pulling in massive numbers for Blizzard every month.
Even if SWTOR does put a huge dent in WoW, i'd say it's about time a game is good enough to get a decent playerbase. But don't let me warn you that posts like this will end up biting you in the butt once SWTOR is release and gets decimated to the ground by WoW.
I don't want to see that happen. I like WoW, but I also LOVE Bioware to the bits. So don't jinx it
Didn't we see threads just like this prior to the release of...
WAR
LOTRO
Aion
Vanguard
<<<----- insert any MMO here launched after December 2004
All these games smashed WoW.. oh wait.. no no they didn't.
In seriousness I dont see SWTOR to be anything more but ME in a bigger world.. which may or may not be a bad thing.. time will tell I guess.
^ This.
It seems to be happening a bit earlier than usual with SW:TOR but threads like this come up before the launch of every AAA MMO.
As do the ones in the SW:TOR forums that others mentioned, where WoW goes from being the elephant in the room to a looming presence, constantly mentioned as something to emulate or avoid.
It's a pre-release cycle that happens over and over and over and over (and, well, you get the point).
No-one will know how good a game SW:TOR is until they get to play it.
As for "killing WoW", I don't play WoW anymore, that was my choice, but its continued existence doesn't matter to me. If people like playing, they'll keep playing, and good for them. Putting "killing WoW" as something a game has to do to succeed even before release is a dangerous game, if the game does well but WoW hasn't "suffered too" much because of it, will it then have "failed"? Really?
They'll do fine if they manage to compete with WoW, and we won't even know that until 6 months after release when things have settled down and found their groove, when people have tried it and quit and others have tried it and stayed.

I didn't say anyone in particular under estimated them, nor DID I "read that." When I said "we probably shouldn't under estimate the potential," I said WE for a reason. It was a broad comment directed at ALL OF US, including myself, that essentially we shouldn't write anything OFF until we see what happens in the future for this game.
By the way...I'm neither a big Star Wars fan NOR a big WoW fan, so...like I said....I was playing devil's advocate, if you understand what that means.
Why would SW:TOR kill WOW? Its a WOW clone! Ive seen the videos, read the reviews on gameplay, and listened to the developers descriptions.
The game is nothing more than WOW with Lightsabers.
My guild and I were looking forward to this game last year. After getting all the info we've gotten, we've tabled it -- disappointed. We're looking at other Pay to Play titles for 2011. This will not be the one.
How many others will feel the same way as the game develops?
Am I screaming failure? No. If the game had a standard MMO budget it would have done fine.
But this game does not justify the funding put into it, on any level.

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
Hype is a great thing isn't it? The expectations for this game are so far off the charts that it is going to be almost impossible to live up to.
Will see I love Biowares single player games maybe the final product will not be just another heavily instanced WOW clone with a few different bells and wistles but from what I have seen that is not going to be the case. I do not need another solo to max level/end game raiding game no matter how it is packaged.

I do agree with the OP that some WOW fanboys are worried TOR will be the WOW-killer... and it does probably have the best chance of any game so far. Only time will tell if they can pull it off though.
One thing I do have to comment on from the original post is your comments about SWG. Even if Smedly and SOE had not screwed up the game, SWG would never have come anywhere close to WOW's subscription numbers. Their subs were declining even in the good ol' days before the NGE well shy of the 1 million mark. WOW is just a much better game than SWG ever was. I'm not saying that I prefer WoW's themepark mechanics to a good sandbox, but WOW was always a much more polished and bug-free game. Everything they did was done extremely well... which I can't say for SWG. Regardless of what happened with the NGE, SWG never had a chance of coming anywhere close to WOW's success.
Here is why your argument is invalid. Look SW: TOR minimum specs, look at WoW's minumum specs. There is a reason why as much as I'd hate to admit it, WoW and Runescape (Yes, runescape has about 2.5 million players online all the time.) hold so much of the MMO share. Accessability! Here are some MMOs that are better then WoW: Age of Conan, DnD Online, Eve, Everquest 2, WAR, Champions Online, CoX, and many many more. Being a better game then WoW doesn't mean f**k when it comes to sales and subscription rates.
Also, will people stop bitching about the cursed patch to SW:G!? You have no idea what goes into developing a game, or even an MMO for that matter, so I think the proffesionals who invested about $150k into their education, have a good reason for doing what they did. (I never played the game and I don't care too.)
Here's some friendly advice, don't over hype a game. To quote my best friend "Hype is a device created by mean spirited corparate excequtives that never learned the true meaning of x-mas." What that means is simple, if you over hype it to the point where it won't be able to meet your expectations, your gonna rush out, get your copy on release day, play it, and be severly disappointed because you expected the game to cure AIDS, be the second coming of Jesus, give us WARP techonology, ect. In the end you will never be able to enjoy the game. So take a deep breath, relax, and go play The Last Remnant

I can't wait to hear the cries of
The old republic ruined the genre.
Everyone is making TOR clones and it sucks.
TOR is only popular, because it is popular.
TOR is only successful, because it had a 50 kabillion dollar budget and marketing
George Lucas ruined the prequels (oh wait, that one is true)
TOR is filled with nothing but 12 year olds, elitists, kids, jersk, non-mmo players, etc
EZmode, no skill, LCD gameplay
I'm starting to get scared of what will happen in TOR becomes a success.

Not really. I want it to come out ASAP and for it to be good so I can finally stop playing WoW.
