Which would you play? Of 4 Realms- PvP & PvE MMORPG

If you could only have ONE realm per server, which of these 4 realms would you play?

After you vote, please give feedback as to WHY you made that option, and whether or not you liked any of the other realms.

The more feedback, the better.

For example, "I would play as the Humans or Elves, because I like the idea of Elementals, Minotaurs, Castles, and Forests. But I chose the Ancient Forest because I like 4/5 of the races, while i only like 2/5 of the human races, although i love both themes. I hate the undead though, always have, I just don't want to play as any undead! Too depressing!)

REALM #1- Kingdom of Man

Medieval Fantasy Humans- Castles, Knights, Wizards, main city is classic arthurian fantasy, alliance city with classic hobbit fantasy (think; the Shire), classic fantasy dungeon/prison, and open fields. Tall wizard towers, strong keeps, large castles, populated housing, and bustling merchant caravans make up the cities of the humans. With a devotion to Honor, Intelligence, and Greed- the humans are unlike any other. They decide their fate and do not let good, evil, or instincts confuse their strong will to expand. Orders of good and evil, corrupt and honorable, kind and greedy. This is the Kingdom of Man, as Paladins, Wizards, Heretics, Thieves, and Knights are all bound together in bond or torn apart in greed.

RACES:  Human, Halfling, Centaur, Minotaur, Giant (huge race)

The humans live in cities and castles, the halflings in the hills in Shire-like homes, the centaurs in wide open fields, the giants spread across the realm, and the minotaurs in the underground dungeons of the humans.

REALM #2- The Ancient Forest

High magic, sparkling pixie dust and lush, heavy green forested areas. Main city is a forest city (think Kelethin), treeants are everywhere as the forest is alive and preserved. The outskirts of the realm's zones are dark, deep forests protected by vicious animals. Few dare enter, but once allowed access the forest runs deep into wondrous landmarks, beautiful waterfalls and fountains, and ancient buildings covered in vines and moss.

RACES: Elf, Pixie, Werewolf, Elemental (Fire/Air/Water/Earth) Treant (huge race)

The Elves live in the forest-city (think kelethin) in the center of the ancient forest, the pixies nearby in tree-homes and fountains, the ancient Treants near rivers, in secret areas of the deep forest, the werewolves guard the gloomy outskirts to prevent invaders or wonderers into their homes, and the elementals are spread throughout the forest giving and living off its essence.

Realm #3- Greenskins

Nomadic, Shamanistic, or partially Civilized barbarians, the greenskins wreck chaos in their quirky, inventive society. Dwelling in the frozen northern icelands, the southern caves, and the barren deserts, pockets of greenskin civilization can be found throughout every area. What would normally be scattered tribes have now formed into one civilization thanks to the goblin's grand inventions of Air Ships, Watercraft, and The Tunnel- a massive connection of caves and fast-moving underground vehicles. Although partially blood-crazed, they are more civilized and intelligent than the Undead, but far more violently barbaric than the humans or elves. In this, they find a neutrality inbetween the evil of the undead, the preservation of the life in the forest creatures, and the expansive and greedy yet civilized capitalization of the humans.

Races: Goblin, Orc, Lizardman, Wyvern (think smaller dragon- starts as small race, grows to huge race), Troll (huge race)

Realm #4- Army of the Undead

Death, Decay, and Dread fills the scourged lands and spooky forests that the Humans and Elves once called home. Corrupting the forest filling it with fear, scorching the land and leaving destruction in its way, the army of the undead rose to do the only thing it knows to do; consume. Leeches, Maggots, and Rott left behind its path as its victim are turned undead in an ever-growing army of evil.

RACES: Demon (think the movie Legend, large black OR red demon, huge horns, large wings and claws), Skeleton, Vampire, Imp (think small red goblin-like devil), and huge Abominations (think Warcraft abominations or frankenstein type beasts/trolls)

It is rumored that the origin of the undead began by a corrupted wizard who discovered the ancient book of the undead, turning himself from a valiant scholar into the new Arch Lich. Unlocking the power to corrupt all flesh, many were converted into his undead army. The Skeletons, risen humans. The Vampires, infected Elves. The Imps, corrupted goblins. The Abominations- failed attempts at creating demons from pieces of different races. The Demons, the Arch Lich's fewer successes made from several pieces of the races- the key being a Minotaur's heart.

    The Ancient Forest.

Just because I'm honest and now I will publicly say:

    "I LOVE ELVES!"

Call me gay if you want to, whatever.

To the OP: Please change the color of your text, it's nearly unreadable. I've got cancer on my eyes now. :X

i picked the army of the undead because i tend to gravitate towards the "corrupted", but i have a couple of problems with how you have build and labeled the army.

    1) the name, Army of the undead.  you have demons, I dont consider them undead.  I would instead call this the "Army of the Unholy".  Undead and demon tend to fall into the category quite well.

    2) your races.  you have demons and imps, imps are demons.  I would instead make them just into 1 race, demon, and make the character creation process the cosmetic determining factor as to whether the player wished to be a red humanoid with large horns or an imp sized bat winged demon.  just make it cosmetic.

    3) races again.  you have undead and vampire, vampire is undead.  A vampire is the ususally consided the up teir of undead.  i would just take both skeleton and vampire and merge them into 1 undead race.  let the user at character creation choose to be a vampire or skeleton or zombie,  make sure your spellls and abilites are comparable.  Agian since vampire are usually consideded the higher teir of power in the world of the undead you have make so that not everyone is a vampire adn people want to play a skeleton/zombie/mummy/etc.

    4) races again.  Abomination, i would consider these undead, but i like the idea of a large hulky race. So i would change it to "constructs"  that way you allow for any material to be used in the making.  They can be made out of dead flesh/bone material or ever some like steam punk suits of armor, etc.

thanks for the votes and the comment. i changed the text, although I liked the different colors lol. I assume not everyone's background color is the same though, perhaps.

So far it's 25% for all four realms, which is awesome. I specifically tried to tailor each realm to have very popular races in each of them, along with unique races, and a completely unique style and even alignment (chaotic, lawful, neutral, good, evil) with different socities and storylines.

If a 4 realm MMORPG ever came to be, or even 2, 3, 5, or more realm- I would hope and like the realms to be EQUAL in popularity to keep populations naturally balanced in all realms. This was difficult for me dealing with 4 realms but after some research and a lot of thought- I believe I am getting closer to making all four great realms to choice- without any one being too lackluster compared to the others.

some great ideas, thanks for the input!

One caveat of the giant races is primarily dungeons/houses, and being unable to fit through doorways/tunnels.

One solution is to take away each giant race and make it a pet class. The idea would be to have two types of pet classes (perhaps three).

One pet class that is a spam-pet class, similar to a Theurgist from DAoC (temporary pets that launch at the enemy). Humans command Peasants/Soldiers, Goblins Pigs/Spiders/Wolves, Undead zombies/ghouls/imps, and Forest animals/plant-creatures.

The second pet class being a non-temporary pet (but the class' primary power is the pet) and the pet is a giant pet, such as Humans controlling a Giant or Giant Minotaur, Goblins controlling Wyvern/Troll, Elves controlling a Treant/Elemental and the Undead controlling a giant Demon/Abomination. Allow an ability to "shrink" said pet or summon a smaller one for houses, dungeons, etc. This would eliminate all the giant races, and change some races around though.

The third pet class idea would be similar to the WoW hunter. The pet is NOT the primary source of power like the spam-pet class or the huge-pet class. Instead, it's a secondary part to the class and you can "collect them all" just as in many games (such as WoW) you can capture all kinds of different animals to be pets.

I voted undead because playing a huge and ugly abomination seems pretty novel. Novelty is good.

However, since I'm an altaholic at heart, I would probably end up playing everything then get bored because I can't decide who the hell is my "main".

I almost always play the bad guys. The more evil, the better.

Also, there could be more Realms. You should check out the game Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic for some awesome Realm, Spell, and Unit ideas. Would love to see an MMOG based on that IP one day.

They all seem pretty cliched to me. Nothing there that hasn't been done a hundred times over, and then another hundred just to make sure.

    So: none.

In what MMORPG can you be

    1) A giant...ANTHING.

    2) A vampire

    3) A werewolf, minotaur, or centaur. (I can think of only ONE mmorpg where you could be any of these. Shadowbane. And werewolf? WoW's expansion

    4) Skeleton

    5) Imp

    6) Demon

    7) Giant Troll

    8) Giant

    9) Abomination

    10) Wyvern

    11) Treant

    12) Elemental?

    13) Pixie? Fae in EQ2...yea. But they're pretty big. Even so, that's one game. Lizardman isn't common either except in EQ1 and EQ2.

I could go on and on. What game has more than 2 realms? Four?

How many games have realms devoted entirely to Greenskins/Reptiles, Undead, or Forest creatures? Or even Human realm with unique creatures like Minotaur/Centaur?

Once again, in WHAT mmorpg can you play a vampire, skeleton, imp, demon, giant creature, giant, giant troll, abomination, wyvern, treant, or elemental? That's almost half the races in the game.

Cliche? To be fair, the only thing that technically wouldn't be cliche in fantasy setting would be a very weird and odd mix of races which would be weird and confusing to most players. Sure it could work, but yea...

The only thing that has been done hundreds of times over are Humans, Elves, and Orcs. I've never played a game where I could be a Treant, alongside elves, pixies, werewolves, and elemental player characters. Or to play as a giant abomination but also have a skeleton alt and a vampire main.

I'd probably go for men. I like English style castle and knights (not really high fantasy) but I have to say, 3 realms is probably a much better idea in terms of balance.

    Why 3?

If 4 realms are playing and it's FFA, there won't be alliances. When everyone is your enemy, you do not ask the undead to help you kill the goblins. If you do, you'll just be chased for being an easy target.

Ever try to convince Hibernians to assault Midgard with you as Albion? Together?

    Yea....goodluck.

I am curious though as to why 3 is a better balance than 4 when it would always be a 1v1v1v1

Well actually, Midgard and Hibernia teamed up quite often on Albion on my server.

The way it usually works is, if once force becomes two powerful, the other two don't necessarily stop fighting eachother, but the third realm is the bigger threat, so they focus on that, and it balances itself in a way. 4 opens up a wider spectrum of possibilities, which may make for more dynamic gameplay, but might also result in some imbalances. Also its more content to make, spreading the development team thinner. That's just my opinion though, as I've never seen 4 realms, I can't actually say 3 is better.

  • NeanderthalNeanderthal Member RarePosts: 1,861

Based on that set up my first choice would be the Kindom of Men.  Mostly just because of the centaurs.

For some reason the idea of playing as a skeleton appeals to me a bit too though, so undead would probably be my second choice.

Well, according to the polls Undead is far more popular than the other three realms. Perhaps it is a good thing for players to join together to fight another realm. If there are 400 undead players, and 100 of everyone else, then it's only logical in both roleplay and gameplay to join up to fight off the undead. This is often seen in movies where races/groups team up despite their differences to fight off a huge threat. That doesn't mean everyone plays nice though!

It's interesting that happened on your server. When I played, Albion was the weakling (least populated) and Midgard was the highest pop with Hibernia in the middle. Midgard always had 3x albion, and Hibernia 2x albion. Our server never teamed up against midgard. Instead, Hibernia, since it always had a hard time against midgar,d would pick on albion along with midgard because it was easier on them. I, as well as many others on the server tried to get an alliance but it never happened. People just never cared. In fact, even albion refused to help albion- often splitting up and arguing against itself. Yea, my favorite realm of albion was not only the least populated and severely outnumbered (thus the game was unplayable for us and very boring/frustrating) but also what SMALL POPULATION we had was divided, making it even smaller in power.

Maybe my server was just full of retards or elitists. I never could make sense of their style of thinking "If we split up and refuse to work together, we won't lose!" or the enemy's style of thinking "If our enemy is stronger than us, then instead of teaming up with our weaker enemy, let's just pick on them. I'm bullied, so I will bully! Screw teaming up to defeat the real bully!"

    perfect answer, thanks!

    Simple reasoning, realistic reasoning.

To be honest, that's all there really is to pick from. Races. And it's nice to know which races people like.

I'd go with choice 3 simply because I want to see what the Wyvern thing turns out like.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

#4 for me, I'd like to actually play as a demon for once, rather than as someone who has control over one.

  • Angelof2070Angelof2070 Member Posts: 224

How awful, lol. Out of 22 people, 50% would play one realm.

That leaves the other 3 very unpopulated! AHHHH!!!

Perhaps undead is too cool... and there really should be 3 realms, each with their own kind of undead.

There is a certain appeal to the undead, vampire stories do get their waves of popularity after all.  Or just being the "bad guy" in general.

If you decide to go with 3 realms, I'd say go with a light side and a dark side of each.  It might work.

  • Halfling, my favorite race ever. But I also like the elves, lizardmen and wyverns. This game sounds awesome btw :D

i think that atm, there are to many mmorpgs with the same races. if you want to make a blowing mmorpg that think of something new and not something that evry mmo has. I think swg did great in this area, but they had the advantage of having the movies to base their races on. SO if you're thinking of creating a game or something like that: think of something new...

and why exactly do you want to nkow this? are you creating a new game? or just dreaming of the perfect game?:)
