Hello all! Thank you for taking your time with my post
I am interested in joining this game, I have played EQ-EQ2-WOW However they really lost my interest after literally a couple of months because it was so repetitive at the core, felt like a job to keep up with online buddies, and gear orientated. The list goes on but thats not important, I heard EVE is very open and the pvp is fast and fun and is sandbox - something I like. I like the concept of "World PVP" Or you that you can carve out your own destiny - not locked in by sides or levels.
My question is, will I enjoy this game? I enjoy games like Warband and Oblivion etc, and like the skill system. What makes this game so hard that people complain about here and there??
Thank you all for your time, im downloading the demo right now! enjoy your day everybody.

It's hard to get into but it is extremely rewarding. The maturity found throughout the game is a great appeal for me. Do the tutorials and remember even within your first month you won't see 10% of the universe
Played: World of Warcraft (5Y), WarHammer (3M), Anarchy Online, Runescape (5+Y), Lord of the Rings Online, Runes of Magic, City of Heroes/Villains, Dungeons and Dragons Online, Fallen Earth (1M)
Currently Playing: Guild Wars
Currently Trying: None
Taking a Break From: EVE Online
Won't hurt to try it. EVE is really complex. That means it can either be very rewarding or very frustrating for you. Good luck and hope you have fun!
At the very least you can try the free trial. Nothing to lose.
Yes you should try the game. It has a pretty steep learning curve. Do the tutorials, they get you off a decent start. Enjoy!
I'm sure there are some smart people who will try to tell you, based on what your likes and dislikes are, what you will enjoy or not. I honestly think that the best judge is yourself.. to what you will like...
My only opinion is try the game without anyone telling you about the game... I think the mystery of it all can make it interesting. Or, you can read reviews which will give you an idea of what to expect, so you don't waste your time with something you don't like.. but you can miss out on a great game because of a few bias reviews.. I guess the same could be said if it was a crappy game... Up to you.
Have fun..
Eve has one of the best communities i've ever seen tbh. Everyone is mature. The 'noobs' you see in MMOs that are begging for gold or help is something you never see because well... they/'re too stupid to learn how to play and just quit. :P
First off, combat is very tactical. It's all about numbers, damage, resistances, shields, armor, range, speed, etc. You don't fly around with the WASD keys and shoot stuff with your space bar. Thus, it's pretty much the complete opposite of Warband or Oblivion. It's not that bad, though.
Secondly, the game is complex. That's why people say it's hard to learn. The UI, admittedly, is a bit outdated and clunky (if in doubt, right-click it). Lots of menus and small font. CCP has vastly improved their tutorials, so if you do all of them, you should be okay. Don't dabble in stuff like industry or the economy when you start, because you'll get confused like I did. There's a Rookie Help channel that you are forced to stay in for the first 30 days of your subscription. Yeah, you'll need it. Don't be afraid to ask questions. There are also plenty of noob guides and noob corps out there willing to help.
Thirdly, there's a free trial, so knock yourself out. I'd wait until after Tyrannis (May 18th I think?) though, so you can try Planetary Interaction.
if you have to ask when it has a free trial....no
D/L the trial and see what you think. Eve is addictive once you get into it, but it will take you some time to learn the skills you require for PVP etc.
Eve ISK Guide
If you felt like EQ was a job, Eve is like that x10. And no, the game is not as 'complex' as people make it out to be. The combat is not 'fast and fun' as you described. I do not think you will enjoy this game.
Why should he wait? Surely it's better to start now and have the tutorials and such out of the way before PI launches?

He said "pvp", not "hi-sec mission grinding". I can absolutely tell you that EVE PVP goes hellaciously fast once you engage.
Incidentally OP, you should be aware that there is a population of posters on this site that make it their business to try and dissaude people from even trying EVE's free trial. Their motives are subject to speculation.
If you want a 21-day trial invite, PM any of the regular posters here.

Er... dont look in to rookie chat. I hate to see illusions shattered
Give me liberty or give me lasers
If he wants to start the trial on May 13th or whatever to get the tutorials out of the way, that's fine. It seems like he wants to start ASAP. I'm just saying I'd wait for Tyrannis.
PvP is "fast" but not in the meaning of "fast-paced". It is literally very quick and short exercise usually after a medium to long time waiting and preparing.
Incidentally there is a population of Eve players who think that everyone should try out Eve and if you don't like it you're doing something wrong. Their motives are subject to speculation.
Do try the trial. Don't expect it to get much better than that though.

You will only like EVE if you have tons of free time on your hands, are very patient (no fast rewards for like months), and hook up with the community fast (get into a corporation, etc). If you have a job plus a gf or wife and kids, forget it for your RL sake. There is nothing wrong with playing the trial, though.
The good thing about EVE is that it is very different from WoW. And if you can spare extra cash, you can legitimately buy ingame money with real money and thus avoid some of the grinding. Solo play, however, gets boring and repetitive beyond the tutorials. Supposedly it's a 'sandbox' because you have to decide for yourself what to do. I don't really care for this kind of games (and I don't understand why sandbox games are supposedly good and all others are not) as I did not care for a sandbox as a kid except when I was very little.
There's a lot to learn in EVE which makes it difficult, but the visuals and tasks get repetitive and lack purpose. Unless you get into group/corporation action, you may not like it beyond the first 3-4 weeks. And it is hard to get into pvp stuff early on because it takes so long to learn the skills. Time and money could be spent elsewhere with much more joy. Soon I was just logging in to put skills in training and logging off. Some skills take a week to train, and you train one at a time. Longer-term EVE players are used to new people getting a trial, maybe buying the game, but then quitting after the first month or so. It's very PvP- and crafting-oriented. Most of the fun is in getting to know its vast knowledge base and the related complexity combined with multiplayer interaction. I got very excited about EVE at first, but was bored very quickly, maybe because I did not want to be sucked into a situation where I'd belong to a corporation (like a guild) and have to be online at certain times for hours in a row like I did in WoW. All I was doing in EVE quickly lost any sense of meaningfulness. Basically, to enjoy it, you would need to do sort of equivalent of WoW raiding except it would be PvP-based and in space. Travel is boring, and you have to do it a lot. It's constant docking/undocking/warping. Graphics are sharp, but there isn't much to see. It must be a great game for hardcore gamers, but not for the average Joe who has to get along with RL and just wants to have some fun by playing online. I will probably come back to it one day, but it's such a time sink.
Hmm, well looking at the games you've played I'd say there is a good chance you wont play much longer than the trial.
You say you like sandbox, but it doesnt seem as if you've played a sandbox before, you may get 'sandbox dimensia' which is kinda like the opposite to claustrophobia.
If you do start a trial its worth asking someone to trial with you!
If I was in a corp that "expected me to be on at certain hours", I'd be out of that corp as soon as I could get my ships moved. So far in nearly 4 years I have never been in such a corp. Whilst I'm sure they exist, I think that perhaps they're not as frequent as you imply.
The point about being in a good corp is that you want to log in a play alongside them.
Give me liberty or give me lasers
Yea, I'd second this. This is a good principle for any game not just Eve...
The trouble with Eve though is that there are many corps designed to scam new players, So take your time, learn the game and learn what it is you WANT from a corp. In Eve its almost impossible to know that your chosing the right corp if you dont really understand that game. The recruitment officers in eve are very charming and promise the world.. but when you speak to them make sure you have tons of questions to ask them.
i have played most of the games you have and got bored as well, i just started playing eve about a month ago, and although it does have a very steep leanring curve I think it's awesome, I am having a ball playing.
It's different from what you are used to but if you are like me and bored with the norm in th gaming world these days give it a shot.
I also recommend looking into eve university as your first corp they have very friendly peopl;e as well as actual classes to he;p you learn the in and outs of eve

There are main 2 parts to EvE and 2 maturitly levels. The two main parts are PvP and making ISK (in game money). PvP relies on making ISK and therefore neither can be avoided.
As for the maturity levels, as i've previously stated there are two and neither have anything to do with age. One is the player that plays the game to play the game for everything it has to offer including PvP.
The other is the person that hates their life so much that they actually enjoy ganking (attacking new players that obviously have no chance to defend for no other reason than because tey have a need to prove they can take out a defenseless pilot) and griefing (attacking players of any level because the same applies and then follow up with insults and degratory name calling, foul language, attacking the same player over and over, etc...). Most often than not I've found that the gankers and griefers are generally one and the same.
This is usually the hardest part of EvE for new players to accept. EvE has many great things about it that make it an exceptional game, but in the end, if you don't like the idea that there are players out there that will do things like trick you into attacking them so they have kill rights on your character, than EvE probably isn't the game for you, because EvE is all about who has the bigger stick.
A tiny mind is a tidy mind...
I would absolutely encourage you to give it a whirl. It is the most rewarding MMO I've played, so much so I'm working to become more active in its' development by running for the Council of Stellar Management (CSM), a group of player elected people who intercede to CCP on behalf of the players' wishes.
Give me a PM I've got some 21-day trial invites, better than the 14day ones.

I'll agree with the first part of this statement but have to say regarding the highlighted text, do we even play the same game?
I work 50-60 hours a week, have a wife and 3 children and find that EVE is the perfect game to play if you have a busy lifestyle. The real time skill training keeps my character(s) progressing even when I can't be there and I find enough time during the week to make enough ISK to fund my various in game activites.
True, you can let yourself get sucked in (like any MMORPG) and find yourself defending your 0.0 stations from enemy attack night and day, but I left that scene long ago and live in wormholes where I can play very casually and prosper just fine.

And the reason they say this is that in many cases, the person is in fact, doing it wrong. I've seen many posts by people who tried the game out 3 or 4 times before finally "getting it" and discovering they enjoyed playing the game now that they understood it better and perhaps tried something different compared to their first few go arounds.
As for suspect motives, I have to wonder about players who frequently disparage the game they claim to be currently playing.
If you're not having fun, why bother? (stolen from the IRC recruiting motto)

Agree 1000% with sober55! And to the original poster let me elborate on the pvp: you can be attacked anytime, anywhere, and the "authorities" might arrive in time to attack whoever attacked you. Theft is NOT a crime in EVE - people can steal from your containers and all that happens is you're allowed to attack them for 15 minutes. Bear in mind I'm speaking of "high security space", aka highsec. In lowsec, you have NO protections whatsoever! Griefing is totally permitted, the GMs will do nothing about it. People can interfere with your missions, steal your loot, you name it. What other games consider exploits are completely permissable by the EVE developers. And you will never get anyhere without a decent sized corporation backing you up. The bottom line? If you're looking for a level playing field, don't bother with EVE. Its basically a mafia free-for-all in space.
