Can't connect to -any- gaming servers

bcb1991bcb1991 Member Posts: 6

Hello,

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the correct forum seeing as I'm not certain if it is a hardware issue; I don't actually think it is, but I will gladly move this post if an admin sees fit to point me in the right direction.

I've been having this trouble for a while. My computer (laptop, actually) can't connect to any multi-player game servers. It's not my firewall, or anything like that; I have pretty much isolated the problem: My internet host used at my apartment complex does not allow the connection to any type of server from what I can tell. I can go other places like a local coffee shop or something and connect via free WiFi and connecting to game servers is not a problem, but I would really like to be able to play games here at home.

Does anyone know how to maybe bypass this?

Thanks!

Are you paying for wifi at your home or are you stealing bandwith from your neighbors ?   If you are they might have put a PW on there wifi.  If you are paying for wifi then you must contact your provider and have them fix your problem.

they're blocking the ports probably so that one person doesnt take up most of the bandwidth from downloading or whatever. you could either talk to your manager and have them unblock the port you need or you can try and use the default login/pass for the router and unblock it yourself because most places don't change it.

Sorry I wasn't more clear-- The internet is free, here. I'm not stealing from my neighbors or anything. I do have a router that I use for wireless internet, and that could be causing problems, perhaps, but even if I bypass the router and connect straight into the wall via ethernet cable, still no luck.

Also, forgive me; While I'm not completely illiterate with a computer I wouldn't have the first clue how to forward ports on my router. I did try to do it once with a friend's guidance, but I was pretty much clueless as to what I was actually doing and it didn't work. I'm willing to try again, but I would need a step-by-step "For Dummies" version of what to do. ;p

    Thanks for taking an interest!

Which I will never understand since most online games take up less bandwidth than web surfing.

could be their blocking to prevent p2p software like frostwire etc, not exactly uncommon, downside is their probably also blocking the ports needed by the games, or, it could be an issue with proxy server setup..

You could use some kind of http tunnel, like PingFu Iris: http://www.artofping.com/pingfu-iris-http-tunneler.php

Or you could just purchase a good net connection for youself.

Yeah, sounds liek an admin is needed to unblock you.  Alot of people in college dorms have this exact same issue.  I would just speak to your landlord about it.  Good news: nothing wrong with your hardware tho.

All right, thanks a lot, everyone. :) I'm not sure if I can solve the problem without spending money but this was helpful nevertheless.
