Trial taking an infinity to download..any advice?

Hi Guys,

Feeling some positive buzz about AOC.  Ive still got my Collectors Edition on the dusty shelf out back...

Signed up for the Unlimited Trial, just to have a look and test if the game will run well on my new laptop.

I thought rather than install the discs, I would just download a segment of the new trial client, using Funcom's patcher.

Im on ADSL 2, other games and patching are downloading fine, but after a few days trying I cannot get AOC's install/patch to download anything faster than a snails pace.

I dont think installing from the discs would be of any use, as I would still have to use the patcher to 'catchup'.

the other issue is that when I do shutdown the patcher, it doesnt remember the download progress and starts over...sigh.

Is my only option to either :

1. Buy it from Steam, as their downloads go light lightning on my connection.

or

2. Wait it out, and see if the new retail expansion /original discs combo is attractively priced?

Obviously as I only want to try out the game, the 2 options are  undesirable.

ive tried turning off firewalls, anti-virus..no luck.

Is there another 3rd party online source to update the game?

Thanks, any advice appreciated.

With the patcher open click options then uncheck the higher end content in the resource field. You can narrow it down to the first 5 hours of game play and 1-20 playfields. This will speed you up a bit then once your in game and decide to sub you can select the rest of the content to download.

Not sure if its a bug but I was able to do the lvl20 quest to leave Tortage while still on the trial. I still couldnt trade/ use auction house or see region and global chat but was able to lvl up to 26 before I started my sub.

Thanks for the info.  I gave up trying to get the trial content.  Four hours and only 1.5GB, almost slowest server I have ever worked with.  The only thing slower would be p2p 'downloads.'

Sadly thats the big problem with there download they dont use a direct from server download they use a peer to peer so unless more people are downloading a patch or also have there patcher open the download is slow. You might want to check out isohunt or a torrent site that might have a recent build available then you would just have to patch to the current version. I did the trial download about 2 weeks ago and it took about 8 hours total then another 40 min or so for a patch but speed varied quite a bit. I just turned it on and went to bed.

I seem to remember the client took forever for me to download too... so I just did as the above guy... turned it on when I went to bed and let it DL overnight.

However.... even when that was done, it still had to update... glad I checked it right before going to work so I could let it update while I was at the office...

Thanks for the replies guys. Sadly even with an overnight download, this install/patch will take forever.

My ADSL 2 Connection is generally good, but with this AOC patcher its slower than slow. Not viable unfortunetly, might see if I can get a good deal on the new retail pack somewhere down the line.

    Thanks.

There are other places to get the client from other than from the company.  I tried the trial and never finished the download because of the amount of time it would have taken on my connect which is like 30 down and 7 up or something like that.  So, I've gone to looking for the client else where.

Last time I looked you could buy the game box off amazon for around 5 bucks or so. Might be worth the little bit of money to have the game client + 30 days of time for 5-10 dollars.

For me it was at an average of 1MB/sec and finished downloading in 5 hours with no updates, so they might have updated their client.

For me, it took 13 hours to download the client without any updates.  There were times where I was down to .3Kbs!  Once I started updating the client then things picked up speed.  The newer the update, the faster it seemed to go.  I guess they are still using P2P transferrs.  A very dumb way to send the main client out even if it does reduce thier costs.

At this point, I am not even sure it was worth the time and effort.
